Contract: $825,000 x one year
Colorado is the perfect destination for Jonathan Drouin to resurrect his career. Drouin’s always flashed tons of skill, but he was bogged down with injuries, illness and the massive weight of expectations, playing in his hometown province for the
Canadiens.
It was a struggle in Montreal the last few years, but we’re still talking about a player who scored 49 points in 92 games over the last two seasons, and he did so without high-end linemates. Drouin has the puck skills, playmaking vision and creativity to mesh in with Colorado’s high-octane top-six.
There’s also, of course, the Nathan MacKinnon connection. The two won a Memorial Cup together playing for the Halifax Mooseheads and could rekindle that chemistry on the top line. A big bump in linemate quality with the Avs could unlock a breakout season from Drouin. There’s zero downside risk if the fit doesn’t pan out since his dirt-cheap $825,000 cap hit would be buriable.
