Can't afford

Will be interesting to see what happens. Hopefully teams see the Avs as a big driving force in the production and don’t throw a ton of money at him. I’d be curious to see what the bigger deals he had this offseason looked like.

Avs should just say f*** it and offer him a long term deal to keep the cap hit down. He’s a player I could see actually taking a pay cut to stay here if you give him long term security. He and Mack clearly have chemistry and he’s shockingly been great outside of the offense.

You can see that Moosehead chemistry coming back too. Love it. He better sign here long term or I'll be f***ing sad.

Drouin just keeps doing it. Imagine if he turns out like Nuke. A guy left for dead and revives his career in Denver. Drouin turning into a player the Avs can rely on to support the big boys on a 2-3 yr discount type deal would be huge.
No discount for 2-3 years but if we offer term perhaps we can keep him.

Say he keeps this up and gets a 5M X 4 offer on the market we could offer something like 3.5 X 7. His contract would end at the same time as Mack's and they are the same age.

If Landy comes back that's not possible though.

It only makes sense to sign him if Landy is done or they trade a winger. If Landy comes back, we already have for next year:

Landy - Rantanen
Lehky - Nuke
Wood - LOC
Kovalenko

As wingers for next year. The top 6 are obvious locks to make the team and quite frankly given the cap crunch LOC may start as the 3rd line wing as well.

Kovalenko will start with the Avs as well. There's no way he's coming over here without an NHL guarantee AND if he's as good as people here think he might be, he probably starts on the 3rd line with LOC on the 4th line.

There's just no room for him if Landy returns. Not unless they trade a winger. Which personally I think should be an explored option ESPECIALLY if Drouin is willing to sign for like $3-3.5M. If you traded Lehky and signed Drouin for $3.5M for example, that's $1M of space created to go towards the Center position.

But, at least from folks here there's not much of an appetite to trade Lehky and clearly none of the other wingers are getting dealt either.

If MacKinnon makes it clear he wants him back, the organization will find a way. Period.

I think you have to try and bring him back for something reasonable. He just fits so well. He's been a bonus find for a team that lacks forward depth especially skill depth.

If Landy comes back this playoffs and is ready to go next year, there's some decisions to make for sure. Ideally SOMEONE from wing can be converted to a 2C (I know this horse has been beaten so many times), or we need to shed a winger for a 2C. Rants or Lehky I guess is possible but I have a hard time seeing it.

Is there any chance either Gabe, Rants or Drouin could be converted to 2C? Sure would solve a huge problem we have.

Also either way Johanson needs to be either shipped out of bought out. Can't have a 4m anchor when every dollar counts. RyJo + G or Bo will likely be gone this offseason and Behrens (if he's still around) or Malinski will take over full time as the third pairing PMD.

Just tossing this out there. I've not gone to CapFriendly yet ( oh where, oh where has @Richard88 gone!)

Anyway, the Bednar system dilutes the traditional definitions of the positions. Let's assume that Landy does come back next year. Why not:

Drouin / Mac / Nuke
Lehky / Landy / Mikko

Is Landy the prototype 2C? Nope, but there is nothing prototypical about Bednar's system.

Someone earlier ( I believe @Balthazar ) suggested offering Drouin 7 x $3.5M whereas someone might offer 4 x $5M. I suspect he would stay as it seems as though he is having a ball here. Drouin at 1LW for that kind of money would be an outrageous steal.

On a somewhat parallel track, one of the D needs to go in order to generate some breathing room cap-wise. There are pros and cons to trading each of Byram, Girard or Manson, but one of the three must go to make cap space. But if it meant keeping Drouin in the fold, I'd move Sammy G, as much as I hate it.

Any other GM offering Drouin a big contract would be an idiot. Drouin is succeeding with MacKinnon, and with Bednar as his coach, and this success will not be replicated elsewhere. They'd trade him back here, retained, after he fizzles out with another organization.

I'm not even sure the avs would be smart to re-sign Drouin to anything substantial. Very much a product of this environment. If he wants to stay happy, winning, producing, etc he can sign a sweetheart deal - a modest raise from what he's making now. I don't think I'd go over 2m/year and 2-3 years max. If that doesn't get him signed then good luck with your new club
