Not only that but Drouin and Mitts is more of the same...not sure it can work. Rants should definitely play on the 2nd line but it's Bednar, so we know Rants will be stapled to Mack no matter what.
He wasn't with Kadri here during the Cup run. No reason to believe Bednar won't try Mikko with 37.

There aren’t many players in this league that are willing to take discounts to play in a good fit, but Drouin is one of them.

He did it this year and imo, I could see him doing it again. Depending on how the season ends. If he keeps playing like he has for a while now and doesn’t end up getting buried in the playoffs, it wouldn’t shock me to see him to take less than market value to play in Colorado.

I think he’s a guy who’s dealt with a lot in his life in terms of challenges, and mental health and wouldn’t just throw away a good fit for the cash.

He is not signing one year contract next off-season, he doesnt have to. One year contract would be extremely foolish for him. He needs to cash on this season.

EDIT;

A bit shocked to see he has earned 35 million in NHL. :o

I guess he doesn't need pocket money.

I would want to keep him. He seems happy here and likes playing with MacK.. I'd offer him lower money but more term than other teams. Maybe he would take the deal?

He’s on pace for like 50 points. What does 50 points get a player now?

Just noticed that Drouin is the 7th best value contact this year if you go off cost per point.

Thomas Novak is also the only guy ahead of him that isn't a rookie on an ELC, and Noessen is the only other non rookie in the top 10.

Tremendous value they got in him this year.

1) Lucas Raymond
2) Wyatt Johnston
3) Seth Jarvis
4) Connor Bedard
5) Quinton Byfield
6) Thomas Novak
7) Jonathan Drouin
8) John-Jason Peterka
9) Mason McTavish
10) Stefan Noessen

Reactions: The Moops and Murzu
The difference in attitude between Drouin and Johansen was stunning.

One guy, Drouin, was like, "f***, I gotta work hard!"

The other guy, RyJo, was like, "f***, I gotta work hard?"
I respect that JD chose to come here. Pretty sure there was a team out there willing to give him more than 825K.

He's been friends with Nate long enough to know that Nate could speak for him to get him a shot with the team but that he was not going to get any special treatment once here because that's not how the Dawg rolls. He knew signing here, his placement would be merit based. The difference in attitude between RyJo and JD speaks to a possible character defect in Johansen. But also, JD probably redoubled his effort and dedication because he didn't want to let down his friend.

The points and scoring are nice, and he's clearly on a heater now. Still he's not gonna touch 60 and odds of crossing 20g are low. Points are really not the story here though. He's producing at a slightly elevated rate, but close to what was expected if he got a good amount of time with MacK and stayed healthy. The story is Drouin's play without the puck. He's not playing soft, he's hounding players for the puck, he's not shying away from hits... he's even thrown a few. This is what takes him from a soft but talented player that ends up on near minimum contracts or with bad teams as roster filler... to a guy teams actually desire in their top 6. He has clear skill, but now he's playing with tenacity and good defensive hockey alongside it. That changes his complexion as a player to the league quite a bit. Now this is one year out of many... where teams are going to wonder if this was a pure desperation switch that flipped, and will it remain flipped? That'll probably give pause league wide and play into the Avs' hands (if they are willing to get rid of a top 6 wing).

There is still going to be a boom or bust factor to his next contract, but if this switch remains flipped, he's a quality 2nd line player for nearly any team.

Agreed but isn’t that a testament to the coaches too?

Without a doubt they will be playing together.

I've said it a few times before. I'm not overly concerned about the production from Drouin. He's been a ~0.55-0.6 PPG guy pretty much every year of his career. No doubt he'll do that here as well playing Top 6 minutes.

Where the big question will lie with Drouin, is whether the effort level away from the puck picks up, whether he's any bit more willing to engage and battle on the ice and whetherhe can actually stay healthy for at least ~80% of a season. The Avs are no doubt banking that Mackinnon will "drag" him into the battle so to speak.

I'm pretty skeptical about it, but at $825k I think it was a good gamble to take. We'll see what happens. If it doesn't work it isn't that big of a deal because adding a Top 6 winger at the trade deadline wouldnt be the most expensive trade to make. Our 2C and 3C situations are the far more pressing issues that really need those guys to perform well.

Yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and say he that he has more then answered the big question regarding his game before the season.

Completely bought into the play away from the puck. Its been a real treat to watch a guy who change his game as much as Drouin has this year.

And honestly it still feels like he's only getting better the deeper into the season we get. Like he's still finding more confidence in himself and recognizing that playing hard and tenacious away from the puck is creating even more offense for himself on the other end.

JD is going to be the main character at some point this spring. Just too much talent and effort on his part to not have a big moment or two in the playoffs.

I have no doubts JD will come back with a vengeance. Besides, we don't want him to do TOO well, we need to be able to re-sign him for the next few seasons on the real cheap hahaha. It will clique, I promise you all. I'm still thinking 50-60 points isn't out of the question once he starts humming.

I was pretty close, hey :)

My only issue with Drouin is long term trust.

I think Drouin's mental state effects his game ALOT, do we have enough trust that simply being in the right situation is enough for a long term deal, to trust that he won't regress if any adversity comes up along the way?

He earned a new contract this year, and someone is going to pay it, do we trust him enough for that team to be us?

The money could be found if we absolutely wanted to retain him.
