Does @The Shermanator know about this?
The amount of performance bonuses are usually draft pick slotted. Will be interesting to see how Boldy, Knight and York’s come out but 16th overall picks usually do not get the full 850k schedule A performance bonuses. Kaut also a 16 got 425k. Caulfield only got 850k in year 3.
So IF there was much negotiation here I’d say Newhook won it. I’m also curious to see the GP bonus threshholds and if they are attainable or not. A GP bonus is pretty common for NCAA signings. Jost and Makar got them.
He’s built like a fridge. He’s short. Shorter than he’s listed as. I think some people will even be a little shocked at his height in an NHL uniform. But he’s thick especially in the lower body and core.Actually mildly surprised they signed him this year. I started the year thinking they'd do this, but then after his injuries, I thought they may wait until the off season at least.
One thing I'm curious about is whether he was able to pack on some upper body muscle during the season this year. He looked a tad small for the NHL to play his style, when I watched him at the WJC. Haven't watched him much at BC to know whether that changed throughout the year.
Teams are lining up all the Avalanche players for hits now because of how well they're playing. Hopefully he's physically ready to absorb them from bigger guys than he's used to playing against.
It does seem like between this and Jost really finding his game at 3C, while they passed on Staal for a 3rd+5th, maybe they won't bring in another 3C this year?
Avs save $50k across 3 seasons ($16,667 per year) by having his caphit at $908,333 instead of the customary $925k. Seems kind of petty, but I guess he can make up that $50k easily some other way.The amount of performance bonuses are usually draft pick slotted. Great for Newhook, not great for the Avs.I’m not an expert on this type of stuff, but I’m a little confused as to why we sign him now. From what I’m reading, this year counts as one of his three years on his entry-level contract no matter what. What is the benefit to us of signing him now if he doesn’t play for us at all this year? We lose a year on the ELC
I doubt they bring in a pure 3C at this stage, but I could certainly envisage that they'll target someone like Laughton or Granlund who are better on the wing but can play C as well.Actually mildly surprised they signed him this year. It’s the right move for the Avs. Otherwise he would have played a grand total of 18 organized hockey games in a 19 month span. That’s just not good in two very important years of development. Sucks to burn a year but this kid needs to play some hockey. Plus on the bright side it also means contract 2 will certainly be of a lower AAV. Sucks to lose a year but it had to happen.Great for Newhook, not great for the Avs.

I would not start Helleson’s clock now, him staying is the best option.

So why did the Avs sign him now?Great for Newhook, not great for the Avs.
2 seasonsDoes he gain UFA status after next year. Or is it the year after that?
We are the same person, just with two accounts.
Because the other college guys from his draft class like Boldy, Knight and Caufield just signed too? You don't want to alienate your college guy who could just decide to wait a little and become UFA.So why did the Avs sign him now?
Why does he get rocked so often? He’s built like a fridge. He’s short. Shorter than he’s listed as. I think some people will even be a little shocked at his height in an NHL uniform. But he’s thick especially in the lower body and core.
Makar came in and was a star. To me there is no issue, you want a star for your playoffs.Because the other college guys from his draft class like Boldy, Knight and Caufield just signed too? You don't want to alienate your college guy who could just decide to wait a little and become UFA.
For Newhook it's pretty big, at the end of his career he'll have one more year at full salary. For the Avs in their window losing an ELC year from a potential top 6 player hurts.
I said the same thing about Makar BTW. Sure that playoff experience was great and all but it would be nice to have an extra ~7M of cap space next season...could even be the difference between a cup and no cup, who knows.
He flies through the middle of the ice with his head down. Why does he get rocked so often?
By all measures he is an undersized player.
for sakic, its damned if you do, damned if you dont...whatever he does, jus cant win, always the unhappy few! There isn’t a win/loss in all negotiations. There is give and take, but in the end all parties here want to win. The GP bonus isn’t spelled out yet (I’d guess 5), but a max of 1.3m of A bonuses over the term. Basically the same as Kaut, just a different structure and structure is important. Give and take. People are so adversarial.
Im just concerned about him getting blown up every other shift.Newhook was built on draft day. That’s never been a concern.
The big thing for him was adjusting to higher levels of hockey.
