He's got the defenseman version of the Matthews contract: both teams (Leafs and Avs) managed to buy only one UFA year from their star player and the difference in AAV (roughly 20%) is the difference between an elite center and an elite defenseman.

Thats because both guys want out when its done. Matthews to Arizona and Cale to Calgary.

I was thinking he'd probably get $9M, but I was hoping it'd be for 7 years.

Wish they could have done $9.5M x 7 but maybe Cale's camp wanted more for seven years. Either way glad he's done early in the off season and they can turn their attention to Gabe now.

Pretty worried about this. I know Makar is amazing but he isnt particularly good on the defensive side of things. Seems like a lot for not even getting the 7th or 8th year.

He's fine defensively and he'll only get better.

His main issue is just inconsistency. Sometimes it looks like he's reading the play very well and staying in good position. Other times he might lose his man or look a tad confused.

I think it's because he's always thinking multiple steps ahead. Trying to read the ice with both an offensive and defensive mindset, so he'll know what to do if the puck comes to him.

He always battles hard though physically in the D zone, which I always like to see. As opposed to offensive D men that just shadow their assignment all over the ice putting in the minimum effort, and saving their energy for offense. Cale puts in the effort defensively.

Ironing out that inconsistency is just part of the process for young defenseman though. He's a very good bet to get better defensively, because he's such a hard worker, who's committed to the details of the game.

Makar is fine defensively. His speed and instincts allow him to break up plays before most other dmen can.

His only issue is infront of our own net and when it gets physical in the corners. That said, the puck is gone so fast before the forecheck can even get to him.

Some people are forgetting this kid is only 22. He could get stronger without losing his speed and ability but regardless, that's not his game.

We locked up not only a top 3 Dman in the league but a top 10 overall player. There will be multiple Norris trophies in his future. He will only get better and better. The only thing that will hold him back is injuries.

I have to give Makar’s agents some credit for brokering a solid deal for the team.

I was listening to the Makar interview and apparently he wasn’t that involved in the negotiations. Maybe that’s kind of standard these days, but good on them for not trying to maximize the money in their pockets.

There are some agencies that only care about getting every cent, which I guess is to the benefit of their clients. But, the way this worked out should earn them some good will with the Avs org and Cale, since he’s happy with the deal.

If Cale stays healthy he's gonna make a fortune in the NHL.

He'll have made about $62M by the time this deal is done, and then he'll be a 28 year old UFA, who's still probably among, if not the best defenseman in the NHL, with plenty of good years left.

He's going to cost a ton to re-sign the next time, but that's a problem for down the road.

Most of the players make fortune when compared to normal people.

Well yeah but there's still a discrepancy between the average NHLer and the elite.

Cale could end up making $150-200M in his career. Matt Calvert just retired after making around $20M.

Well he did have an 11 year career.

Also, it's probably a couple million less, because he split time between the NHL and AHL his first three years.

So next 6 years is our window? then it shuts down completely.
According to plenty of Avs fans the window shut as of the game six loss to Vegas. Probably no need to watch this team again until they have a shot at a MacKinnon type player at first over all. Might be years in the future unfortunately.
