One final note - for the folks saying 8x$10M would've been possible or we "should've" gone 8x$10M...I don't think so. 6 years buys a single UFA year, those extra 2 years (year 7 and year 8) would have both been UFA years. I seriously doubt Makar's camp was selling both of those off for just $1M additional. Makes no sense imo.

Fair… 9m is the right number on 6. I would have avoided 6 like the plagues

I don’t care the 6 years, I’m happy with the $9M, it’s more important, gives Sakic a little more cap than expected.

I would have avoided the bridge like the plague, because then you are 2 years from UFA, and the AAV for years 4-6 would have been much bigger

But would allow the Avs to load up on the next two years… which are the best chances left in the window.

I don’t buy this 2 years window theory, at all. So you would have bridged ? I was not aware

MacK on his sweet heart deal and Byram in his ELC seem like the best chance. Not saying the cup contending years abruptly end but these two years look like very good chances.

Its the more $ combined with 2 less years that's disappointing. Go bridge 2-3 years at somewhat lower AVV or go full 8 years at ~1 mill more. These 6 year deals bringing players right to UFA is disappointing, especially considering the trouble we are seeing Joe re-signing Landy.

If Sakic has a tough time re-signing players who are near UFA, then that's on him. Either pay them or don't. Can't complain about the results.
The agents job is to maximize the profit for his client and Sakic's job is to get the best deal for the Avs.

Considering we weren't close to winning when they were making a combined 7 million, pretty unlikely.

My evaluation is that the Avs are still in construction, it’s not only the cap, it’s a balance in the team, it’s experience. If Sakic does a good job as he has done the last few years, we could retool the team accordingly.

But up to now, the reality is that the window hasn’t really open yet. Fans are evaluating this team better than it is, my opinion anyway

It's really, really tough to get good UFA's for unatractive markets. The only way these teams can have good players is by drafting them....team control is very very important and the more years the better for the league and for the fans.

Teams have enough control already. They have enough time and available cap space in those markets to retain their players.
More years of team control would just lead to more players taking deals that lead them right up to UFA and bigger bidding wars and those teams that had more control would just end up losing the bidding wars to larger markets.

Being a top 5 team two years in a row, and advancing to the second round three years in a row constitutes an open window as much as anything can in this league

So pleased. Did i want 8 years? Of course. But 8 years wasn’t coming anywhere near that number. This gives the Avs a team friendly AAV for the window and of both sides are on the same page in 2027 he can re-up with us then.

The guy had literally zero comparables. The closest was Heiskanen who’s production is about 50% of Makar’s.

I like it.

Yes, longer would be better for piece of mind, but I think it would cost too much. Those 7th and 8th years would add a ton to the contract total. For Makar's agent, those years are worth upwards of $32M (what do you figure a multiple Norris winning UFA would command in the summer of 2028?). Add that $30M tot he $54M total on the 6 year contract; it comes to $96M. Which would make the AAV for the full 8 years $12M/year. Which puts a huge constraint on the Avs during the flat cap years. Even if you figure only those last two year are worth $12M each, it brings the total to $88M and and AAV of $11M/year. Still too much.

As for a bridge deal...those are becoming rather rare for higher end talent. There are only 17 defensemen in the league under a contract that both started and ended as RFA,the highest of which has an AAV of $3M (Ryan Lindgren) and is double the second highest. This does not include entry level. Not does it account for the RFAs that are not signed right this moment, but there are 17 more guys that are coming off non-ELC contracts as RFA...Sanheim, Pionk and Zadorov being the highest paid at just over $3M AAV each. Top end D talent does not seem to go for bridge deals for now.

Lol at all of you who thought it would be $10M+

It was always going to be $9M... Just like Landeskog is going to be 7X7 or 8X6.75

My friend , you and i are expecting the same numbers for Landeskog as a fair deal . But i'm just supper worried that he will look elsewhere for more money . It's taking way too much time to get it done :(

The multiple exits in the second round show that the window is not as open as the fans seems to think
