hard to believe the consensus on here just two years ago was that he'd never win a rocket
Am I missing something? ~63% of responses were that he would win at least one.

Let’s not forget how close Auston was to winning the Rocket in his rookie year… 60 goals over an 82 game season is the new bar Matthews has set.

It’s not like this season was a fluke… he’s clearly #1 and will likely score @60 every year for the next several years.

When we landed the number one pick that would give us Auston, I yelled so loud that I woke up my wife and two young kids. I still don't feel like I was in the wrong there, lol. He is awesome, we are so lucky to have him on the team we all cheer for.

Matthews was projected as a low 2nd - early 3rd pick in the 2016 draft. Just a ridiculously magnificent pick by Lou to gamble on him with the 1st overall.

I don't think you are missing anything. I just thought it was interesting that the most popular choice was that he would never win a Rocket, and 51% of people thought he either couldn't win over Ovechkin or wouldn't win at all. He seems to constantly defy expectations, and hopefully that continues

Is it safe to say we will need 5-6 goals from Matthews in a seven game series for us to have a chance? That would equal his regular season pace. Or is 4-5 enough? It's not all on him I realize, but he has to drop the hammer here I think and get off to a strong start.

I certainly didn't think he'd hit 60. I thought he had the potential, but I wouldn't have bet on it, let alone 51 in 50 games, let alone 60 in 73.

Y'know in retrospect, I remain confused that Matthews was touted as a complete #1C, the "safe" option versus Patrik Laine, the next Ovechkin. Matthews scored 28 goals in 40 games as an 18yo in the NLA. That's f***ing nuts, better than many NHLers pulled off in their lockout hiatuses, and somehow more or less got lost in the pre-draft frothings. I expected him to be a 40-40 guy, and then he hit NHL ice, and started shooting the puck very uniquely, and I was like yeah alright, a lot of people have gotten this kid very wrong. He might be the best shooter on the planet, I don't know how that got "missed."

I would call that fair, but even more than that, Jack Campbell needs to be a .920 goaltender. If Jack is his second-half self, these playoffs are over before they start. That's why I really would've preferred Boston. This team could outscore its goaltending much easier against Boston than Tampa.

We couldn't beat Dallas in a 7 game series if Jack plays like he did while he was dealing with that nagging injury. Let's hope his play in the last couple weeks continues.

Cannot argue that, and as I was typing I was 100% thinking of the goaltending. I am just going to assume Jack is back.

We couldn't best anyone with goaltening like that, period; even the Devils, Habs, Coyotes...

The fact that he has gotten back to playing the way he was earlier in the season, AND coupled with the Leafs tightening things up bodes well I think. We'll see tomorrow, but no reason to think everything falls apart Monday night.

By the end of next season Matthews should easily pass Vaive (299) for 5th on the all-time Leafs goal-scoring list. The following season Ellis(332) and Keon (365) to reach #3.

And even if his scoring rate drops off to mere mortals (mid-50s say) he could catch Sundin (420) by the end of the '24-'25 season. He'd have to put up 160 goals over the next 3 seasons, so avoiding any lengthy injuries will be the key.

I'm hoping for 4-5. Have to be realistic. goal scoring is harder in the playoffs.

to put it in perspective, Crosby and Ovechkin have managed to score 15 goals each as their single postseason records.

15 goals divided by 4 series gets you about 4 goals a series.

What gets posted on HFboards isn’t reality. This is the forum where 90% of posters think that Barzal is a more talented player than Marner.

Auston Matthews 2022 rocket winner. Should win the hart. He's the best player in the NHL. He's better than mcd. He's better than mr powerplay points/product of mcd no matter how hard they try and hide it drai. He's just better. And he's a leaf!!!

I hope we get the slightly edgy Auston throwing a few hits to knock guys off the puck and shaking them off to make a bit of room in this series. It's going to be a war, hoping warrior Auston stakes some ground here.

Fun fact: at the same age of 24, Matthews is only 10 behind Ovechkin’s total.

Ovechkin’s next 3 seasons were either down years or one shortened, seeing him score 32, then 38, and finally 32 again.

If Matthews stays healthy the next 3 years, it’s entirely likely he could score 50 average (if not more) which would put him 38 goals ahead of Ovechkin at 27. (409 to 371)
