Yeah, Oilers fans are in Complete disarray right now. All they keep talking about are all the secondary assists. It is pathetic.

Why is it, that we had ‘Cindy Crysby’, and yet when you call out McDavid for any of his faults (inability to push his team over the hump, 35-45% of his points come on the PP, spotty two way effort etc,.) you get a wave of Oiler fans acting like you just told them their girlfriends a skank?

I mean Crosby was a bit of a Mary in his first 5-6 seasons…but the man scored the Golden Goal and never takes a shift off.

It’s pretty crazy to think that, even given the incredibly high expectations we all had for Matthews when he was drafted, he’s managed to exceed them all. Just need the playoff success now

I crunched some basic math on the main boards I thought might be interesting. Basically Matthews and Ovechkin are at an identical scoring pace after 6 seasons, the difference being Ovechkin had more health and enjoyed stability in the world.

6 seasons and 82 games is 492 games.

Auston Matthews:

Due to injuries, pandemic impacted seasons, Auston Matthews has only played 407.

259 goals in 407 games averages out to 0.63 goals a game, which in the course of 492 games would be 310 goals. (Matthews is basically missing an 85 game season and 53 goals from his totals at this point).

Alexander Ovechkin:

Ovechkin misses 15 games in his first 6 seasons.

301 goals in 477 games averages out to 0.63 goals a game, which in the course of 492 games would be 310 goals.

It turn wildly in Matthews' favor when you start factoring in PP time.

Milestones Recap:

1. Set the single-season goal scoring record for an original six franchise.
2. Joins Ovechkin and Stamkos as the only players to score 60g in the salary cap era.
3. The first player to score 50 in 50 in a single season since Mario Lemieux in 95-96 (pre dead puck era).
4. The first Leafs player to score 100 points in a single season since Doug Gilmour in 93-94.

I don't feel the pressure of comparing Matthews to Ovechkin to be honest. We need Matthews to be our Crosby/Malkin hybrid and he's given us Ovechkin level scoring. Pretty unique player.
Agreed and we also need JT to find his goal scoring touch again. Sounds like Keefe is reuniting JT and Nylander so JT better be ready to park his ass in front of the net and take some punishment.

I wrote another post on where Matthews stands in the hierarchy of all time goal scoring greats.

No matter what happens in the future, he’s already achieved what’s only been done by players like Dye, Conacher, Howe, Richard, Bobby Hull, Esposito, Bossy, Gretzky, Lemieux, Hull, Selanne, Bure, Ovechkin and Stamkos.

In terms of accomplishments, he’s already among the greats, at age 24 nonetheless.

Matthews and his place among all-time goal scoring greats

I think they need to put JT in a Shayne Corson on Yashin role and have him neutralize Stamkos.

There were some games where he reminded me of Crosby.
The Crosby effort is what I'm referring to.

The Leafs had missed 10 of the previous 11 playoffs, until Lou stepped up to the Podium and made Auston Matthews the #1 overall pick.

The big #1 franchise center has lead the Leafs to the playoffs in 6 consecutive years now restoring the Leafs to respectability and now will go as far as AM carries them.

All of Leafs Nation hopes now lie in Awesome Auston, perhaps the best player at least best natural goal scorer the team has ever had.

Yeah great pick Lou.

hard to believe the consensus on here just two years ago was that he'd never win a rocket

It's not hard to believe at all. Nobody knows anything on this board, it's essentially bar smack talk in electronic form.

Fantastic seasons for both Matthews and Marner. Now we need the same in the playoffs and for some reason I am confident they will show up.

It's worse than bar talk. The anonymity and othering on the internet makes any main board discussion regarding the Leafs toxic and useless as all hell. I mean Christ the man was one goal off the Rocket in a season that was interrupted by a Global event and more than half the voters thought he'd never win or would need a mid-late 30s Ovechkin to retire before doing so?

Nah, in a bar or just the day to day you can get away with an actual decent conversation about hockey with Habs, Sens, hell even Bruins fans. We're of course easy targets to make fun of but once the easy ribbing is done you can actually get somewhere in terms of a knowledgeable discussion. On here it's nothing but shit slinging and trolling. 1967 and 1st round exit "jokes" dominate any conversation about Toronto because everybody wants the automatic high like counts that comes with shitting on the Leafs. It's also much easier to be a dick behind a computer screen whereas if some of what was said on these boards was spoken in real life the posters in question might get a punch in the mouth.

I too am grateful Lou didn't manage to screw that up.

Still can't believe we have the back to back rocket winner on our team, I remember all those years of being jealous of other teams and their Crosbys and Ovies.

You can only truly appreciate it if you've been through all the lows, the Jason Blakes and Clarksons, Jeff Finger years, these bandwagoners that just jump on when the team gets good will never know how truly awesome this is.
