St Jacobs, Ontario. The missus had dragged me to a play (don't remember what it was, don't care). Went outside during intermission to check what was happening with the lottery. Yelled loudly.
I've never been there but I'm sure the play mattered very little once you found out the good news!

At my ex girlfriend's house and she was trying to get my attention and the entire time I was just holding the TV remote to make sure she did not change the channel.

OT: It's actually insane to me that we drafted such a player. I went on record saying we may have gotten a Malkin type guy at the draft and I guess I was not wrong. I still think his best point production is ahead of him even if he never scores more goals than this season. Marner's coming in to his own as a goal scorer (could feasibly drop 40 next year) and Bunting will have a whole year under his belt with the Matthews-Marner duo as well. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility assuming good health and at least LEAGUE AVERAGE amount of PP's to suggest he could sweep the awards (the hardest obviously being the Art Ross given the current competition). But his second in league PPG is a very positive sign.

Sounds like you're better off without her! Lol

I have never liked Jim Hughson, but that OT goal against CBJ has to go down as one of the worst calls in broadcasting history.

The goal was scored 10 seconds off of a faceoff where Kappy wasn't even on the ice. It was also a PP goal that he awarded to a player that didn't play PP1, nor did he play on the wall. I genuinely don't understand how you make that mistake lol
Jimmy boy will come out of retirement if his Cansucks become good again.

Age when player scored their max goals:

Stamkos 21
Vaive 22
Crosby 22
Ovetchkin 22
Gretzky 23
Mario 23
Matthews 24
Bossy 24
Hull 26

Between Covid and injuries we missed out on a lot.
I wouldn't say injuries. Covud yes. Shortened seaon where he would have hit 50 the first time and last year where he probably hits 60.

Hopefully Matthews has the Ovie gene and keeps pumping in 50 well into his 30's

Is it just me or was anyone else stoked that it was Chris Cuthbert on the call last night? Greatness in the booth calling greatness on the ice

"Kept in by Matthews, Here it is, SCOOORRREESSS...."

Now I just want to here Joe Bowen's call on the goal now.
It really was an excellent call. Even though I only saw the game afterwards and knew it was going in it still got the blood pumping.

Oh you're a Matthews fan now?

Edit: Just so everyone knows, our good friend Stamkos4life voted Pettersson to be better than Matthews.

When matthews was drafted, I said he could be the 2nd best player in the league, maybe even best due to the fact he's built for playoff hockey compared to mcdavid.

But before this season, mcdavid had more assists than matthews had points 5/6 years plus his 0.75 ppg in the PO (I value PO production over regular season and have been consitent with this) I started to doubt he would reach that level.

The only thing left for him to surpass players like mcdavid and MacKinnon is a big PO performance.

What a ride Auston has taken us on… from draft day to 4 goals in his first game… to the Calder and then the Rocket… to 51 goals in 50 games and then 60 goals, another Rocket and serious Hart contender.

We’ve been spoiled, no doubt… but not as spoiled as to when Auston signs an eight year deal.

He’s never leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs… he already knows he will be the greatest Maple Leaf ever.

I loved the malkin comp. Malkin at the peak of his powers was a destroyer. Just took over and could not be stopped. Matthews is similar, when he wants. He just can’t be stopped.

So regarding Matthews and the Hart... I think it's a fair knock on Matthews for games missed, though I think there are some huge flaws in some of the other reasons against him getting it. Namely that he's not the most valuable player to his team league wide.

For one, I see alot of people talking about Toronto being too good of a team for Matthews to have the same effect as someone like McDavid for Edmonton, or Shesterksin for NYR, but then there's this subjective qualifier that if you put up enough points above your competition you should get it even if you're on a great team. Seems like a contradiction.

I would also argue that the "good team" qualifier is also flawed. Just because a team is a playoff team without their best player does not minimize how valuable that player is to their team.

To put this in perspective, Matthews did something that's only been done twice in his lifetime with 60 goals (there was quite a few before that but its been rare the past 20 years,) and had a career year in both goals and points. He is strong defensively and on faceoffs, and is a league leader in other areas like takeaways.

It's not coincidence that Matthews' career year is also the year Toronto set franchise records for games won and points in a season. Who cares if Toronto might be a playoff team without Matthews; with him having a career year the team has literally had their best regular season of the modern era as well.

I think it's fair to argue that Matthews games missed negatively impacts his chances. I also think it's fair to argue some of the other great seasons by players around the league are more deserving, but I find the "not the most valuable player to his team" argument silly.

I think the missed games will be his downfall. With the 6-7 more games in hand that McDavid technically has/had, Matthews by PPG only would be in the 115-120 point range with most likely 65 goals and 50 assists which is absolutely insane in theory. He would be a unanimous Hart winner if he didn't miss so many games. But with the missed games and McDavid looking like he's primed to drop 125 this year, it's going to either McDavid or Gaudreau IMO (especially given JG's insane 5v5 production).

I think this is a key point on why there will be a lot of motivation for him to stay in Toronto. The opportunity to break a lot of career scoring records on an original six franchise and almost certainly go down as the greatest player for the franchise must be a very enticing selling point to someone as competitive as Matthews.

Or at least, when it comes to discussing his next contract, if I'm Dubas I'm really hammering that point home. Including bringing in a bunch of Leafs alumni along with producing an in-house historical documentary of the franchise's greatest players and moments with Auston's highlights added seamlessly into the mix. Sittler, Keon, Salming, Mats, Dougie, Vaive, Conacher (and many others) and now AM34. Hammer home how he is a big part of the legacy.

Could someone post here all the Leafs records held by AM34? Thanks!

P.S. pretty stoked he was born in the city I currently live in, even though his family left for Arizona when Auston was still a toddler.

he is the face of the league, and at least some of that is because he's a Leafs player. I think he embraces the limelight.

lol I think when they were courting Stamkos they flew down and brought a Canadian Tire CEO with them too. glad the team has gotten smarter about these things since.

Man to think what he could have had point and goal wise if he was not recovering from his wrist, and games missed during the season (suspension/small injury)

I think he could have won the Ross or come close.

I think he is the best player in the league this year.

Here is how dominant Matthews has been this year. When he scored #60, he maintained the puck and turned into the slot, heading for the net. I said even before he shot "here comes 60". It's almost never in doubt when you just KNOW he wants to score.

My wife, who is a Habs fan and doesn't appreciate the Leafs franchise, was angry with my early prognostication as the play unfolded. Correctly, as it were.

How many others who were watching the game just knew he was going to score on that play as it was unfolding? Untold numbers of us, as he has been money all season.

It's not a breakaway or a two on one with him where you figure it's a 50/50 and feel overly confident, he just needs a look and a fan can confidently predict he will find the twine.

As soon as he kept it onside it felt like a given. I stood up at that point lol you just knew!

I can’t be the only one thinking how beastly Auston is becoming… after back to back Rockets and the only guy with 60 in the last decade.

It’s almost like he’s telling everyone… we’re here to win the Championship.

Couldn't agree more. Now all we need is a 2009 Playoff Malkin performance this year :sarcasm:
