They need to rest all key players. It’s a nothing game
They can't rest everyone, the older guys need the rest whereas Matthews might not want or need the rest. He just missed a bunch of games and another week off might be a bit much. My guess is he plays but we'll see.

"It's between Laine and Matthews." (Not an exact quote)
- Mike Babcock a week or so before the draft when asked if the Leafs had made a choice between the two on who they were selecting first overall.

I would like to personally thank whomever in the organization had the stones to stand up during one of the many meetings in the lead up to that draft and asked "How is this even a question? We're taking Auston. Now, let's move on. Who do we like in the second round?"

80 in 82 , next year? Anyone? 😁

Seriously though hoping for 70 - 75
I'm all for shooting for the sky but yeah, 70 goals would be more than good enough for me

It's crazy that it's well within reason. Say Matthews comes into this season with a healthy wrist hitting the ground running, i swear he could have done 70 goals.

He could’ve got close without the suspension or late season injury, in a full healthy season I think he would’ve got 70.

Probably just trying to be coy. I don't think there was any real serious consideration of taking Laine over Matthews, personally.

Don't worry he will.

Most of us were thrilled when we got Mathews. Number one center seemed like something other teams could get. There were a few that were upset we didn't pick Laine!

I’ve been a fan of Toronto for many, many years. I’ve seen a lot of good players come and go for the Leafs. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one as utterly dominating in nearly every facet of the game as I have with Auston Matthews.

Clearly he’s the best natural goal scorer of this generation, you can just look at the most goals scored since he debuted in 2016 until now at even strength and overall, clearly he leads both of those categories.

It goes beyond just goalscoring abilities for me though. To me, it’s his attention to detail to the defensive side of the game. It’s his defensive side of the game that leads to many of his scoring opportunities. Look at how many times he takes the puck away from the opposition. He’s at the top of the NHL in regards to takeaways.

He’s also a big body that can move a lot of people out of his way, very intimidating, good stick and puck handling.

He also scores in a lot of different situations now, he isn’t as predictable on how most of his goals are going to be scored. He can score them close on net, wraparounds, deflections, slapshots, his arsenal has improved tenfold this season.

I am anxious to see what he can do in the playoffs this post-season, along with Mitch Marner and hopefully an entire healthy team.

Awesome Austin hits 60 .. Best goal scorer to ever play for the Leafs .

Leafs hope in Cup success now lies in Matthews hands for the future.

Who knew if you patiently follow the Leafs for 60 years, that now I got to witness a 60 goal scoring Maple Leaf.

Thanks Lou, we couldn't have done it without you. !!!

As of now some fans in Winterpeg still believe Laine is better.

There was never a doubt who was in charge and who the pick was going to be. :)
