Awesome Austin hits 60 .. Best goal scorer to ever play for the Leafs .

Leafs hope in Cup success now lies in Matthews hands for the future.

Who knew if you patiently follow the Leafs for 60 years, that now I got to witness a 60 goal scoring Maple Leaf.

Thanks Lou, we couldn't have done it without you. !!!

Thanks Lou? Dang you.

Age when player scored their max goals:

Stamkos 21
Vaive 22
Crosby 22
Ovetchkin 22
Gretzky 23
Mario 23
Matthews 24
Bossy 24
Hull 26

Between Covid and injuries we missed out on a lot.

All those players faced a lower scoring league as they aged, for Matthews it has been the opposite. Even with a drop in overall scoring he will eclipse 65 goals in a full season and has a real shot at 70+

The day a once proud franchise after missing the playoffs 10 of the previous 11 seasons was restored to respectability can be pin pointed to this day.

Maple Leafs make Auston Matthews the No. 1 pick

The Leafs haven't missed the playoffs since, and with Cup aspirations instilled, they now rest on the shoulders of this man who just popped 60 goals in a regular season.

On the mains McDavid will only lose* because ‘voter fatigue’.

Maybe this voter fatigue comes from the fact that he’s done nothing but compile points on a mediocre team? I’m aware the Leafs haven’t won anything either, but they’ve been an elite or nearly-elite team every year past his rookie season.

* - McDavid could still easily win, even if I don’t think he should.

You believe that was actually the case?

Of course not. Even when he said it he had a smirk on his face.
Unfortunately when posting I sometimes fail in stressing the sarcasm of my remarks. I have to work on that.

In any case, the point of the post was basically "Thank you MLSE for drafting Matthews."

Where were you when you found out the Leafs had the 1st pick in the 2016 draft?

At my ex girlfriend's house and she was trying to get my attention and the entire time I was just holding the TV remote to make sure she did not change the channel.

OT: It's actually insane to me that we drafted such a player. I went on record saying we may have gotten a Malkin type guy at the draft and I guess I was not wrong. I still think his best point production is ahead of him even if he never scores more goals than this season. Marner's coming in to his own as a goal scorer (could feasibly drop 40 next year) and Bunting will have a whole year under his belt with the Matthews-Marner duo as well. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility assuming good health and at least LEAGUE AVERAGE amount of PP's to suggest he could sweep the awards (the hardest obviously being the Art Ross given the current competition). But his second in league PPG is a very positive sign.

CC is a great play by play guy

Oh you're a Matthews fan now?

Edit: Just so everyone knows, our good friend Stamkos4life voted Pettersson to be better than Matthews.

Not enough can be said about this guy. All time Leafs regular season goal scoring king. Greatest talent we’ve ever had. Just the start of great things to come. He strikes me as a results orientated player, so I expect him to put playoff success high on his list now.

Hughson: "KASPERI KAPANEN SCORES HIS 60TH!!"
I have never liked Jim Hughson, but that OT goal against CBJ has to go down as one of the worst calls in broadcasting history.

The goal was scored 10 seconds off of a faceoff where Kappy wasn't even on the ice. It was also a PP goal that he awarded to a player that didn't play PP1, nor did he play on the wall. I genuinely don't understand how you make that mistake lol

I really wondered if he was just that genuinely incompetent at his job to mess that up or if he did it intentionally because he was salty the Leafs came back and won.

I'm mostly fine with the Tavares signing, but he (Matthews) should have probably been made the captain as well. Him or Rielly.

He does seem pretty competent whenever he calls a Canucks game....
Hughson is petty and unprofessional. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if he did it on purpose. Didn't he also make a humdrum goal call when Kapanen scored in OT against Washington in the playoffs?

This is the big reason I don't lump Simpson and Hughson together. Hughson has gotten progressively worse at his job while he was calling games for the Leafs. Simpson, though he can be bias at times, has gotten progressively better IMO and actually acts like a professional most of the time.

Superior physically, mentally, emotionally to 99% of players all time. Skills matched by few, and throw in desire to succeed. So happy he is a Leaf.

St Jacobs, Ontario. The missus had dragged me to a play (don't remember what it was, don't care). Went outside during intermission to check what was happening with the lottery. Yelled loudly.

So regarding Matthews and the Hart... I think it's a fair knock on Matthews for games missed, though I think there are some huge flaws in some of the other reasons against him getting it. Namely that he's not the most valuable player to his team league wide.

For one, I see alot of people talking about Toronto being too good of a team for Matthews to have the same effect as someone like McDavid for Edmonton, or Shesterksin for NYR, but then there's this subjective qualifier that if you put up enough points above your competition you should get it even if you're on a great team. Seems like a contradiction.

I would also argue that the "good team" qualifier is also flawed. Just because a team is a playoff team without their best player does not minimize how valuable that player is to their team.

To put this in perspective, Matthews did something that's only been done twice in his lifetime with 60 goals (there was quite a few before that but its been rare the past 20 years,) and had a career year in both goals and points. He is strong defensively and on faceoffs, and is a league leader in other areas like takeaways.

It's not coincidence that Matthews' career year is also the year Toronto set franchise records for games won and points in a season. Who cares if Toronto might be a playoff team without Matthews; with him having a career year the team has literally had their best regular season of the modern era as well.

I think it's fair to argue that Matthews games missed negatively impacts his chances. I also think it's fair to argue some of the other great seasons by players around the league are more deserving, but I find the "not the most valuable player to his team" argument silly.
