In the grand scheme of things, Anthony Cirelli is a 6'0" agitating whatever who plays with a mean Tucker face. Matthews ought to go power on power and lean on, blow up on the boards and dominate Anthony Cirelli en route to 5 on 5 production. If you want to be great, you don't let these speed bumps get in your way. Got to have a healthy amount of disrespect.
I agree, but remember last year vs. Montreal when Matthews and Marner were being hard matched by Danault and dominated, and Keefe infamously said he wasn't going to get them away from Danault. I know they're supposed to win the matchup, but they couldn't. So if you can get them away from Cirelli who shut them down and get them vs. Stamkos who they've beaten badly at 5 v 5 they should do. We all wish they would roll Cirelli, but it isn't happening so far.

On the flip side imagine being the rocket winner and potential Hart winner getting MVP chants and you're coming out for shift 3 and shift 7 because your third line ran a train on an empty net lmao.

A lot of going hard in the playoffs is mental. Tough for Matthews to find the killer instinct with coaching like that.

it's a very interesting approach, @Stephen summed it up well.

starting the game by putting your worst foot forward. letting them get a few goals as a head start.

Keefe playing 10D backgammon.

The game plan from a 6’3” should be the same. Blow him up on the boards, lean on him driving the net, scrum him and bear hug him and use him like a personal punching bag. There’s no way you give a guy 3” inches shorter and maybe 30 pounds lighter the license to think he can hang tough with you. Whatever anger Matthews tapped into vs Dahlin (not the cross check but the battle) this is the time to use it. Cirelli’s a speed bump. Don’t treat him with any respect if you think you’re a top 3 player in the game.

Yup, you're right. Matthews and Mitch have not been good enough the last few games.

Thank goodness Huberdeau didn't find his way into the finalists. I would have lost some faith in the voters, and I don't have much faith to begin with

Time for Auston to win the first league MVP for a Maple Leaf in more than 65 years and the first since expansion.

Only Leafs to ever do it are:

Ted Kennedy in 1955
Babe Pratt in 1944
Honestly it shouldn't even be close, probably will be and I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't win but it should be near unanimous.

Just reading the Shane Wright thread and brought back memories of Matthews draft year. I remember how obsessively I was following Matthews as a prospect that whole year. Reading every interview, watching every highlight. Then we win the lottery and of course all the "neutrals" start to pick him apart. P/60 jokes. Most overrated player in the league according to HF.

Consecutive Hart nominations. He's been just as good as our biggest homers predicted lol. Such a rewarding career to follow. In his pre-draft interviews I remember Auston's dad saying he knew the pressure of Toronto and how hungry they were for success. And that Auston wanted to be the one to bring them back to prominence. We're getting closer.

Craig Button of Leafs lunch admitted he didn’t have Matthews in his top 3.

Said what Gaudreau and Josi did hasn’t been done in 30 years and Matthews didn’t do anything to match that….. I guess Button wasn’t following the 51 in 50

TSN loves taking a really patronizing tone vs the Toronto fanbase whenever Leaf topics comes up. Bob McKenzie, Darren Dreger, Craig Button, even new guys and ex Leafs like Carlo and MJ.

He should win. If he does not it's leafs bias.He absolutely is the most valuable player in the NHL.

I find MJ isn’t too bad, Carlo has no idea what he’s talking about and the other 3 I agree.

Did not want to muddy the MVP Thead with post season talk.

I suspect we are going to see beast mode effort next game.

He needs to take a page out of Crosby's book and be the key player moving the team to the next round.

Two pretty equal teams, we should expect a leader to step forward.

Played hard, physical, but not good enough tonight. Wonder if his wrist was hurt, he never really took any wrist shots all series.

He couldn't game break in the biggest moment in Game 7. Did a lot of the other little things well, but didn't have a goal. Also, really don't like him playing point on the extra man and thought he was too far on the perimeter on the few PP chances we got. He's not necessarily a point shot scorer so the point is just wasted. And when he was on the half wall tonight he got too far away from the faceoff dot and his shooting angles looked way too extreme.

He had two late dump-ins that just seemed brain dead to me, maybe I was missing something.
