He is the best player in the league. Yes he is. When he turns it on, you can't stop him. Power, speed, skill and shot.
don’t ever say this heretical shit again. please. We act like such childish homers any time we get something even slightly good. I’ve seen people on here say Kadri > Tavares a long time ago, Kerfoot > Kadri and now this Matthews stuff. Seriously stop. There’s more to this world and hockey than Toronto. McDavid was the better player is the better player and probably will always be the better player, corsi be dammed. Matthews is a top 5 talent but not the best. That’s good enough to win.

Matthews to Arizona for their:

1) 3OA in 2022.
2) Arizona's 2023 1 Pick - which could be Connor Bedard.
3) Dylan Guenther
4) Barrett Hayton

This team is not going anywhere and Matthews will demand $15M in 2024 so let him go home - get as much as you can, while you can.

In exchange, Arizona gets their home town hero and they sell tickets in their new building.

This was his best playoff series by a country mile. 2nd best player in the series behind Hedman imo.

Matthews has never won a playoff series as far as I know.

He has lost every single time in the NHL and he lost in the first round of the Swiss league.

He is the definition of anti clutch.

We needed twice as many goals from him in this series then we get from Nylander. Thats his Job and why he is paid as much. Did not happen. Played good outside of that.

Matthews and Marner, JT, and Nylander can't get it done in the big game it is what is is.

Matthews throws his body around because he know he ain't going to be a game breaker offensively. It's nice to see when the series is still on , but when the series is over and you get to review.... It's disappointing that Matthews will throw checks instead of scoring goals in the series defining games. Guys just isn't ready for the big moments. Maybe next year. I won't be watching until the playoffs

You have to have players who hit in PO, but I dont know if it should be your best player.

How would you say his play compared to TB's stars? Hedman was a consistent stud but I'd be hard pressed to say that any of the others outplayed him. I won't criticize him, Marner, or even JT for their contributions this year. They were the obvious focus of the opposing team's defensive strategy and they contributed about as well as expected this year.

For me, this year is on the depth players for sure. Engvall, Mik, Kerfoot straight up disappeared as the series wore on. Kase was a complete non-factor (though I'll cut him slack for returning from injury).

Matthews isn't qualified to tie McDavid's skates. Watch 30 secs of the Oilers game 7 and Connor is dangerous every time he touches the ice. Matthews is never dangerous in the post season because frankly as a Yankee he mostly seems to care about regular season stats and collecting a pay cheque. Some players just have that special something that carries them when it matters. Matthews has none of that evident in his game.

Loved his physicality, that is a new wrinkle that shows real evolution. My only criticism, he didn’t want the puck on his stick again last night, he was looking to dish immediately, we will win when AM goes A to B and says you can’t do anything about it. Another wrung on the ladder, but still not rarified air that defines a player.

Matthews played great in this series. Using the body to pitch in was a great development. I expect he has some kind of injury that was affecting his ability to shoot.

It was awesome wat Ning his march to 60. We should savour getting to watch this kid.

Matthews won the Rocket with a 60 goal season, but while his playoffs improved it likely cost him the Hart trophy.

Matthews was likely the favourite for the Hart entering the playoffs, so lucky voting had completed, because after watching McDavid produce 2 or more points in 6 of the 7 games and carry his team back from 3-2 down in the series to advance to the next round he likely would have recaptured the Hart trophy with that performance as league MVP. IMO

Edit: Completed thought.

He is not staying in Toronto. Book it.
I agree.

My Guess : The NHL is already encouraging Arizona to go after Matthews in 2024 to fill their new building - "Home town boy" and all that.

If he leaves in 2024, we'll rue the fact that we got nothing in return for the kid.

Trade him, get a ton of assets, and break open the bank vault for him in 2024 - if we need to bring him back.

McDavid is a gamer.

just a suggestion but how about more winning and less crying

I think it's especially sad when we allow our frustrations to take away our empathy. I'm pissed off as hell too, but there are healthier ways to show it than this. Knowing that he was emotional is actually a bit reassuring to me.

It means that he really cares, and in some way makes him more relatable. In past years I haven't always gotten that impression. I do believe that he left it all on the ice this year and that's a small sliver of positivity I can take from this.
