Playoffs are different from regular season. In the playoffs line pairing is much easier. The problem with Matthews and Marner is that they allowed the Canadien line to get inside their head and fustrate them. It was really evident when a easy simple clearing play. Marner lifted the puck over the glass for a penalty. That was a mental error caused because Marner was fustrated. Same with Matthews they were playing him real close and hitting him, doing little things to annoy him and it did. Matthews if he wants to go down as being an elite performer has to rise to the occasion. He has to find that next level in his game. If he doesn't he will go down aa good regular season player who chokes in the playoffs. Great players find a way to take their game to the next level, they dig down harder, work harder, fight harder. That moment when Mathews was laughing when he was being ragged dolled by the Montreal defenseman said alot about Matthews mindset. that was no laughing matter. A liitle shove or a little poke of the stick, fine to laugh it off. But you're getting manhandled you have to push back, like get in that players face let him know your not backing down. If you have played the game you know in those situations you have to push back in a smart way. nOt just laugh and skate away. Matthews displayed a defeated attitude by that.

That was hard to watch when Matty was laughing that off.

To be fair, he did physically battle that series.

But that was a liberty being taken that shouldn't have happened.

Matthews was at least hitting and competing. Mitch takes bad angles to pucks to avoid battles
He takes angles in anticipation of where the puck is going. He’s always played that way. Sometimes it works, other times it looks bad.

When this happened, I was thinking "Ha! Look at Matthews. He's giving them a sinister smile because he's going to get his revenge by scoring 3 goals on them tonight". After the series ended, and that didn't happen, it now just looks like a very wimpy response to getting manhandled. Sometimes I don't get when players act that way. I would lose my mind if someone thrashed me around and gave me little punches to the head. I would instantly turn into an angry bull.

I felt the same thing. And while it’s good to take the power play, he can take another step in the push back department.

I thought Matthews did play the body a lot more in the series and when he did it really helped create space. It seemed like there was less of this in the last couple of games.

He also needs a legitimately scary winger. When Chiarot was giving him the face washes, he should have given them back knowing the sherif was going to show up and straighten Chiarot out. We don’t have that sheriff. One staged fight in the series tells me we took them lightly and felt we would get through so why fight.

Matthews will be more physical, and an even better player, next year.

When AM leaves for FA in a few years will we be chanting "We Don't Need You" ha ha and then instantly be better like the Islanders?

He’s dressed like a marshmallow.

does it feel weird waking up and spending your time obsessing over people who don’t know you exist? Serious q.

what’s also funny is Matthews would almost certainly dummy you in a fight, dressed as a
Marshmallow.

like I tell others, get a life.

Matthews with yet another Lady Byng nomination. He may win this enough times for them to rename the trophy after him. I'm surprised all three nominees aren't Leafs players.

It's no wonder Matthews thrived in the Swiss league.

He wouldn't dare lay a finger and risk his lady Byng. Probably just laugh as he gets pushed around like what he did against the Habs.

I'm fine with getting rid of everyone on the team besides Matthews and hope to god that this years playoffs was an anomaly for him scoring wise.

1 goal in 7 games for the rocket winner is embarassing

Matthews won't ever be a leader. He's obviously skilled enough to be a leading scorer for any team but he scores low in inspiring others with setting an example of doing anything it takes to win.
Marner gets far more flack because he's even worse that way and holding the team hostage to his contract demands and failure to live up to them every time the playoffs start.

Scoring goals isn't doing anything it takes to win?

Lol why are some people even leafs fans I don't get it?

Giggling about getting beaten up by your opponent, taking nights off physically, never appearing to even get angry at losing....yeah, there's more to playing the game than just scoring goals to be a winner.
