Aside from all the obvious stuff like dumpstering goalies and embarrassing defensemen, I'm constantly blown away by his puck control. All those little chip moves with his stick where the first touch on a bouncing puck is a 15-foot pass to an open man. He'll twist his stick fully around his back to catch bobbling pucks, or use his skates in full stride to pull pucks out of feet or along the boards. It's like watching a professional soccer player where the puck is just on a magnet to him before he even has control, and he uses the first touch to create more space for himself. At some point I hope we get some of those videos like Patrick Kane gets with his crazy stickhandling, but showing off just how in control of wobbly pucks Matthews is. Nobody in the league controls it as seamlessly in all situations as he does. One hand, no hand, two hands and three players on top of him, he controls the puck better than anyone.

And then he goes out and dumpsters goalies and embarasses defensemen. My only wish is that he can actually start finishing some of those hat tricks!

Remember in the 2016 draft, when we only had what like a 20% chance at Matthews, we tried being optimistic about potentially losing the lottery?

“Obviously Matthews would be amazing but if we drop to second and get Laine it’ll also be great. Laine - Nylander - Marner will be a sick line. Same if we drop to third and get Pool party!”

“If we drop to 4th we should get PLD because we need C depth”

“We should get Tkachuk because of his connection with Marner”

“How about trading down for Alex Nylander?”

Looking back now, thank god we won the lottery, because none of the other players come close to Matthews.

Did you see how mad Holtby was at Miller?

"How the F do you let AM34 get position on you and just walk in all alone!?"

I notice that all the time, his stick handling is next level.
Gotta have the best mitts in the league.

A few years from now we will be talking about him as the greatest Leaf ever, and it won't be even close either.

I simply love his defensive game as well. You don't even need to mention what he can do offensively. This year, he just does it all.

More and more shifts happening where it feels like Matthews is a one man show and doesn't really need anyone else on the ice.

I would actually like to see Keefe experiment with putting him with some struggling players.
Mikheyev-Matthews-Vesey, just to get those two going.

He has a good chance at winning MVP this year imo. McDavid/Drai's team suck, Mackinnon is out for a couple weeks minimum, Kucherov out the year.

Toronto as the top seed in the division with Matthews winning the rocket, being top 10 in points and having an amazing 2 way season should be enough to give him a very good chance

Veseys best season includes 35 points, what the f*** is there to get going there? Terrible idea, just terrible.

The Leaf hater media across Canada won't let him win the MVP if Drai/McDavid outscore him, playoffs or not. They've already locked that up despite their team being a mess

I still remember thinking to myself when it was down to Toronto and Winnipeg that if the Leafs ended up with the 2nd overall pick I would be disappointed.

Voting for the Hart Trophy is done before the playoffs start. So if Matthews ever scored 50+ goals what the Leafs do in the playoffs has no effect on that.

He checks all the boxes now.
Using his size more to bump players of the puck, elite puck stealer, extremely agile for his size, low 50s faceoff percentage, no McDavid speed-wise but he can fly when he sees a lane, stickhandle in a phone booth, incredible vision, oh and that shot.
