Up to 46 points, second in goals, and top 10 in points.

More importantly he seems to be more involved in the game, playing more 200ft hockey, even a tad more grit.

This is what I want to see consistently.

Matthews was good under Babcock and he's continued to be good under Keefe. People were just venting at him because the Leafs were losing.

He was the only reason why we even scored goals under Babcock this season.

He's going to hit 50 this year.

I think he still plays as well. He was just not engaged very often before. Even when he was scoring earlier in the season, he was not involved as much on both ends.

hint. He’s a sabres/ eichel fan

He's going to hit 50 and 90+ points while leading his team into the playoffs after an absolutely disastrous start to the year by the team.

Matthews is the antithesis to Leon Draisaitl.

He's never hit 70 points yet, has only played with anyone remotely close to his level for 15 games in his career, scored 40 once (and 2 more times if adjusted by games played), and hasn't yet missed the playoffs.

On a team with a guy who was top 5 in Hart voting a few years ago and just put up career high offensive numbers, and a guy who just put up 94 points, Matthews is clearly the top dog on the team.

No, his play was very sub par for many games.

Mackinnon is not in that tier.

I care about the quality of player, not their shiny totals/irrelevant trophies without context.

Actually, it's even strength goals per 60, even strength points per 60, even strength primary points per 60, powerplay goals per 60, powerplay points per 60, and powerplay primary points per 60. You know, just the entirety of production, and it's way more valuable and representative than raw points will ever be.

They are two of the most underrated players in the entire cap era. If these players came in in 2005/2006 and got 6 minutes of PPs every game like Crosby/Ovechkin/Malkin, the perception on this board would be incredibly different. Heck, if they got the league average PP TOI for superstars today, the perception on this board would be incredibly different.

A few people said this, because Marner had a season for the ages in the OHL, with stats that projected him to be a superstar. He is the 2nd best player from that draft today.

Yes, results matter. Context also matters. Per 60 stats are results, just with crucial context added.

There is nothing cherry picked about any of the stats I have posted. In fact, it's incredibly hard to find anything they aren't one of the best in the league at. No matter which type of production I looked at, no matter which time-frame I used, they kept popping up at the top. That's very rare, and that's basically just their pre-prime results.

There is nothing "screwed" with the Leaf's cap. Leafs are in one of the best situations league-wide with the cap. They have their core locked in and zero bad contracts moving forward.

Just to clarify, you believe MacKinnon is not in that tier but Matthews is?

This is nonsense.

Every major point producer in the league benefits in some degree from pp isage and linemates.

If Matthews decides winning means a great deal to him (and it does with most players), the sky is the limit. That's how I view his play this year. A guy who is improving on his game and wants to win badly. I have said on here that in my opinion, he and Andersen are the most untouchable for trade prospects.

I hope he breaks 50 goals. He is in the unique position, at such a young age, where one can honestly say "if he decides to stay with this team for his career, he could own most offensive records". For a franchise over 100 years old, that would be one hell of a statement (more importantly, I hope, a S.C or two).

Mats had 420 goals in his career. Matthews already has 130 or so. Simply put, if he stayed in Toronto for his career, he would obliterate the record. He and Marner, would probably be neck and neck for most points in a career. All of this, secondary to winning a Cup of course.

Sometimes we forget, just how lucky we are to watch the offense this team can produce. It's probably unmatched in team history. I hope Dubas appreciates this and find a way to improve the back end, even if ever so slightly.

Since 2017-2018, when Mackinnon broke out...

ES P/60

Matthews - 2.90
Mackinnon - 2.65

ES P1/60

Matthews - 2.51
Mackinnon - 2.14

PP P/60

Mackinnon - 7.09
Matthews - 6.32

PP P1/60

Mackinnon - 5.19
Matthews - 5.17

This is pre-prime for Matthews with way worse ES linemates, and about 40% of the PP sample on the 2nd unit, being compared against Mackinnon in his prime, on one of the most stacked lines in the league, on the 1st PP unit for the whole sample.

I called this two months ago, that Matthews was going to explode. He is doing just that now, on his way to a 50+ Goal season.
