Yes if he scores 55 goals it will be a new Leafs franchise record for goals in a season.

The current record is 54 goals which is shared between Dave Andreychuk and Rick Vaive.

The only thing I remembered about Dave Andreychuk is his long reach around the net and he was always behind due to his lack of speed.

No one should be given flack for calling Matthews generational. He’s going to be the next great goalscorer next to Ovechkin.

Funnily enough, I remember reading about Matthews setting up Hyman for either the most or 2nd most high danger chances in the league in his rookie year. Hyman was horrendous at finishing chances that year. If he had finished those chances at a near average rate, Matthews would've been ppg as a rookie.

I remember because that's when people on here kept saying why is Babcock always playing Matthews with Hyman, where as today Hyman has become a much better player.

I've said earlier this year that he and Andersen are the only two I wouldn't trade. Even when they go through their cold streaks, you have to trust their overall impact on the teams success.

The guy is in his early twenties, and once again scores 40, with 27 games to play, and nobody is surprised.

If he wins the Rocket Richard trophy for the Leafs it will be even more rare than the Leafs winning the Cup. Does the name Gaye Stewart ring a bell? 1945-46 season. Insanity.

I think Matthews is the only one on that list of no trades. Career Leaf.

I was a huge critic of Hyman that year, but he's become one of my favourite players on the team. He kind of reminds me of Kulemin with his defensive presence, speed and great work along the boards. Doesn't have the size or the shot though. Kulemin was a beefy dude with the Leafs.

I don’t think anyone could match his front of the net presence and that’s why he is a HOF

I remember at times being frustrated when Hyman missed some easy scoring chances from Matthews in his rookie season, however it wasn't at the level of omg get him off Matthews line.

I know the main board would never admit this, but if Matty keeps this pace up, and finishes with 60g/100pts, I would say he should be a finalist for the Hart.

Especially if we make the playoffs.

It's not allowed for Leafs players on the main board. or I just gave up lol

Before Soup was injured he was legit pretty close to the top of the league in rookie numbers. So on the rookie of the year board I said what about Ilya? I was told no. So I asked "am I not allowed to mention a guy who is clearly one of the top rookies" and the response was "no you are not allowed"

So clearly Leaf players are not allowed to be talked about for major awards lol and it sucks always fighting with other posters about it.

At the very least right now Matthews deserves to be in the top 10 or top 5 in Hart Trophy voting. Once he get 50 goals and if Toronto makes the playoffs, a serious conversation should happen if he deserves to be a finalist in the top 3.

Sadly he maybe deserving of the Hart if he keeps this up, but we will never be able to talk about it in a Hart thread, well at least without somebody saying "he won't AINEC" or "anything Leaf fan making this thread about them"

I thought about creating a poll asking will Matthews score 60 goals since James Mirtle tweeted that Matthews is now on pace for that number, plus he thinks he will get that amount of goals. However I thought better and did not since someone would say Matthews has not yet scored 50 goals.
