Thank you for posting all those stats, especially the takeaway category because it's something to remember when non Leafs fans say Matthews has not improved on his defensive game this season.

He's letting us know that he's gonna hit 'em with the 4 vs the Habs.

I wouldn't really look at overall numbers for that though as rink bias is such a huge factor. With how arbitrary the definition is, it becomes all about one guy and his tendencies and biases. That's why it's better to look at away stats, so you get the average of 30 guys instead.

When you do, Matthews falls to #7 and Marner drops off the map. I think both Tavares and Nylander gets a bump though.

4 point night for Matthew's, tied for the most goals with 40.

I've been hard on auston but it's good to see him producing and playing well in his own end.

Seriously infuriating that the one guy who didn't realize that happened to be our coach for nearly 5 years...he thought Matthews would lose his "pop" if he played more minutes.

Lol. 21 goals in 21 games right now..
I honestly think that babcock thought john was a much better player so he preferred playing him. Now that keefe is here.....this is matthews team. He knows it too with the confidence he has on the ice. He feels like THE guy now and loves it. This is why i would have preferred him as captain but whatever.

I think he would have been the captain if not for the incident over the summer. Leafs can deny it all they want but I think Matthews lost the C at that point..

What fills me with confidence that Auston has permanently matured into an elite player is that he is becoming "great" at that time of the season when it is most difficult, when opponents are tightening defensively and playing nasty. He now refuses to take a step backward.

That said, it's to his benefit not be named captain at this time - it's about more than who gets the most points. Let the stoic, unflappable Tavares do that heavy lifting for awhile and take the heat so Auston can stay focused.

A few folks around here even tried to argue in the past Matthews wouldnt score more with more icetime....

Never could wrap my head around that mindset

I said this before and I will say it again. Last season when Babcock played Matthews and Marner at 5v5 I think he did it once to tell them and the media at least I tried it. So when he split them up on different lines he thought that would be the end of all of that.

The thing is there are some non Leafs fans on here who don't believe that Matthews is playing better defensively this season. So whenever they say that at least it's proof to say he actually is.

Same with Rielly and Muzzin. They played great together, then he just switched away from it anyway.

That's weird because I remember reading the opposite since Leafs fans were wanting Babcock to give Matthews more ice time.

In last years Game 7 with Toronto losing 2-1 going into the 3rd period Matthews total ice time ended being 18:48 which means he didn't play well over 20:00 minutes. I know the Bruins made it 3-1 at the 2:40 mark and didn't score again until the 17:26 mark into the empty net. However even losing 3-1 is still no excuse for Matthews lack of ice time in an elimination game.

This guy could seriously net 60 goals, a feat so rare these days Ovi's done it only once I believe.

Matthews is more than an elite goal scorer he's generational at it.

Generally hated the Matthews shift in OT vs Montreal. So casual with the puck along with Marner and Barrie. Just watch some Sundin tape and learn to drop the shoulder and drive the damn net.

Aside from that, that was a really poor back check on Suzuki and not being able to corral that rebound.

I am a massive Sundin fan! Likely my favorite all time Leaf. Matthews is the one bright spot we have on this team, and he has the size that Mats had. As Matthews matures he will get that confidence.

I find he's least effective when he's just doing those little Mario Lemieux touch passes out there and over passing to Marner and Barrie. For goodness sake just get a gallop on and lead the charge. Go through a guy. Drive the net. But other than that he's been great lately, least of our problems.

Fully agree. He has the size and strength to do so as well.

Agreed. Seemed like he had no urgency in overtime which was a little dissapointing since he was great the rest of the game backchecking and making defensive plays.
