Oh he's been brilliant defensively this season. I can't fathom how people can't see that. I've seen plenty of Leafs fans say the say, and it's mind-boggling to me.

Yep, he has been much better defensively, that's why he is a +13 in differential where as other stars like Ovi, Crosby and McDavid are all -5 or worse.
Another positive (other than the Panthers losing in regulation) after last night OT loss is that both Ovi and Pasta did not score goals in their games so Matthews is still tied for first with Ovi.

Actually annoying that he's not shooting more, I assume teams are playing towards making him pass. Especially noticeable on the power play, no team wants him to shoot lol. He does have a tendency to try and use his linemates way more than most goalscorers would normally. Maybe its my own selfishness wanting him to shoot over anyone else on the team
Ive never felt like a guy could score at will on the Leafs in my entire life watching them, except for Matthews. Reminiscent of prime Ovechkin, if he gets a clear shot anywhere from the circles, it's going in or missing the net.

He's hit a couple posts and crossbars lately. I think he rang one off the bar late in the third against Anaheim as well.

Since David Pastrnak had a hat trick tonight that means Matthews is no longer tied for 1st in goals scored. So hopefully tomorrow we see Matthews get at least 1 or 2 goals.
Also so far this season Matthews has only went 2 games in a row without getting at least 1 point. He didn't register any points against Montreal and Arizona, so let's hope he keeps that trend going and doesn't go 3 straight games without getting any points.

Auston Matthews scored his 41st goal tonight which is a new single season career high for him.
We should seriously consider trading Auston for Connor McDonald + (assets) once the season is over. This is peak Matthews, his value will never be higher tbh.

At least Matthews kept his streak of not going more than 2 games without a point with his goal.
It is grasping at straws to come with anything to complain about him now. He has elevated every part of his game.

That means each time Matthews scores a goal from now on it will mean a new career high in goals. Let's hope it's way past 54 goals which means a new Leafs single season record.
I was met with so many dead serious ''Tavares is clearly the better player'' arguments last season, but it simply just did not concur with what my eyes were telling me.
