I realize there are abnormal situations and times when guys go off and on the ice at slightly different times. The last 3 games would be a very interesting study as I was at all 3 of those games. From what I could see watching both Matty and Barrie as best I could Matty got Nelson for virtually every shift in the Isles game, almost every shift against Drai in the Oilers game and mostly Wheeler last night (a couple against Lowry). Whereas JT had Barzal, McJesus and Schiefle. and this is what Keefe wanted as the home coach. It was very clear from watching the changes how players were deployed. Matty clearly dominated Nelson and Wheeler up and down ice. But he struggled with Drai in containing him in neutral zone and in defensive zone.

At 5v5, Matthews played 8:13 against Nelson in that game, 8:10 against Barzal. They were his 1st & 2nd most common forward opposition.

Even matchup enthusiast, Michael Babcock, only got Zetterberg on Crosby about 60% of the time (5v5) in their two finals matchups. He did manage to get Lidstrom on Crosby about 80% of the time though.

Imo, individual fwd vs fwd matchups are highly overrated due to their frequency appearing far greater than it is.

I'll admit, he's looked way more engaged since Keefe came in. Hopefully he shows some consistency until the end of the year. Defence has been much better as well and he hasn't faltered under the increased minutes.

100 points is really difficult.
Marner or no Marner, 100 points is a fantastic season for anyone....not named McDavid of course.

Idk, I think it hinges on the PP. He's consistently at the top of the league at ES production. The only gap between him and the guys pacing for 110+ points this year is PP production. If the PP stays the way it is and we get the amount of opportunities that they should get, I think 100+ is doable.

Unfortunately this is not happening...the Leafs are at the bottom of the league in PP opportunities the last few years ever since they became a good team and there's no sense of a turn around anytime soon...this league is rigged.

That’s a big f***ing IF statement.
This team doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt on penalties ever.
It’s actually comical how bad officiating is in Leaf games.
It’s not good overall, but they seem to take the night off in Leaf games.

I looked up this number because I thought it would be a high one and to my surprise so far this season there has only been 3 games when the Leafs were not given a power play and those were against the following teams.

October 19 vs Boston
November 21 vs Arizona
January 4 vs Islanders

Last season after 45 games played what was Marner's total since he ended up with 94 points, because so far through 45 games this season Matthews had 54 points. I would assume that's the best way to guess if he can get to 100 points or close to that number.

What happened with Marner isn't the best way to judge this. Marner was riding much more inflated metrics at the time, whereas this is pretty much just Matthews' normal.

100 points is fully doable.

Is there a way to determine how many faceoffs Matty took against Nelson? and how many against Barzal? Thanks

So your reason is because it's really difficult? 46 points in 37 games is easily within the realm of possibility, especially since he has only been trending upwards since the coaching change and playing with Marner.

When you word it like that, I genuinely would not be surprised if he hits 100 now. 46 in 37 under Keefe with Marner sounds easy.
