I realize there are abnormal situations and times when guys go off and on the ice at slightly different times. The last 3 games would be a very interesting study as I was at all 3 of those games. From what I could see watching both Matty and Barrie as best I could Matty got Nelson for virtually every shift in the Isles game, almost every shift against Drai in the Oilers game and mostly Wheeler last night (a couple against Lowry). Whereas JT had Barzal, McJesus and Schiefle. and this is what Keefe wanted as the home coach. It was very clear from watching the changes how players were deployed. Matty clearly dominated Nelson and Wheeler up and down ice. But he struggled with Drai in containing him in neutral zone and in defensive zone.
At 5v5, Matthews played 8:13 against Nelson in that game, 8:10 against Barzal. They were his 1st & 2nd most common forward opposition.
Even matchup enthusiast, Michael Babcock, only got Zetterberg on Crosby about 60% of the time (5v5) in their two finals matchups. He did manage to get Lidstrom on Crosby about 80% of the time though.
Imo, individual fwd vs fwd matchups are highly overrated due to their frequency appearing far greater than it is.
