This is a lost season for Auston Matthews, 30 goals and 70 points is a stretch. What happened to this guy, his whole career took a nosedive at goal 69.

Matthews failing to score goal #70 and then falling into an abyss is a perfect microcosm of this team. Always close, yet always fail, just like Mitch trying to get point #100. Career losers. Anti-Toews.

That 4 year term might turn out to be a blessing in disguise for us. I don't see his body holding up into his 30s.

I said when he signed the deal that he was risking more than you'd think. The way it's been going, he could be taking some massive reputational damage the way he consistently under delivers in the playoffs.

Anyway the way this season has gone, I wouldn't be surprised if they announced a mystery injury and took him out for a couple of weeks. The guy looks cooked.

I’m legitimately questioning if he took his offseason seriously. He looks gassed every shift, and not just on the second half of the back to back. Filmed too many commercials in order to pad the bank account instead of the necessary cardio sessions. What’s particularly inexplicable is that his decision making has also been awful.

I suppose it’s not too surprising that he appears to have no innate leadership qualities and is still unable to rise to an occasion, but it’s nice to have it proven, as this team will not do anything until all possible avenues of giving the players yet another chance have been exhausted.

Nick Kypreos has mentioned a few times over the years about how younger Matthews had conditioning issues which prevented him from logging massive minutes earlier in his career. Doesn't look like he's worked on anything in the offseason because like you say, he does not look fresh physically or mentally.

I've always been repulsed by his "my dog just died" attitude. Some guys get so fired up they vibrate energy. Matthews is the opposite of that. He is a black hole.

Worst captain choice in my lifetime.

I remember people used to gloat about his G/60 before he started leading the League in actual goals.

And I remember it was brought up that stamina is a thing. Hockey players aren't robots. Not all can handle heavy minutes equally well.

I'm hoping Matthews isn't becoming like Kessel circa 2014 (when his conditioning really took a nosedive and forced him out of town).

He just looks so frustrated and disgusted with every play that dies. There was the one in the second, I think, where he made a really nice move to get around the first guy at the left side half wall, but then the second defender forced him around the net where another player came in, stapled him to the boards and took the puck. The Wild skated it out quickly, and Matthews just coasted for two or three seconds with a scowl on his face, furious that his amazing attack hadn’t worked out. Eventually he re-engaged, but now he’s chasing the play.

You can’t have that from your captain. Losing the puck on an attempted skill play 190 feet from your net? Totally fine. Dogging it and letting the opponents break out while you sulk? Pure poison to the team. Captains have different styles, but they all gotta drive the bus one way or another and this guy is a Sunday driver of a leader.

Add that to the low level of fitness, and I’m really at a loss for words for how out of sorts he looks right now. It’s as bad as the season where JT’s first kid had been born.

He's getting more dzone starts than ever in his career and I think Berube has to drop that strategy real quick, too much too soon, reduce his minutes and his dzone starts, he doesn't seem to be up to game shape yet for whatever reason.
