Dreger interview recap.

Demko:
-going through his goalie workouts; has been skating and taking shots
-hope is that he will return to a full team practice sometime this week
-Canucks are not going to push Demko
-don't feel they need to push Demko because he's been working hard on his own
-game action is inside of 3 weeks but that timeline could be shortened after a couple of practices

Lankinen:
-a perfect example of why you need a 3rd NHL goalie
-other clubs are wondering how they missed out on Lankinen

Joshua:
-Thursday feels like the more likely date
-Dreger's understanding is that his return is inside of 1 week
-having around has been key; good guy to have around
-consistent players, like Joshua, help stabilize the entire line-up

Bowen Byram:
-wouldn't say he's available
-not sure of the long-term fit in Buffalo
-has been told to keep Byram's name circled
-Sabres aren't shopping him but a team or two have called
-depends on where the Sabres are at middle and second-half of the season
-not sure if the Canucks have been one of the teams that have called
-does know that there has been interest from some Western teams
-we know the Canucks are looking for that type of defencemen
-Byram is RFA after this season
-can the Sabres afford to pay Byram what he would demand

Matt Benning:
-was included for salary matching
-will get flipped for a pick

Canucks Needs:
-looking for a puck-moving defenceman and a 3rd line centre
-Ivan Provorv and Cam Fowler are probably available
-starting to see the needs of certain clubs

Lekkerimaki:
-belief is he will get called up but is not sure when
-Canucks are thrilled with his adjustment to the AHL
-teams that develop well are very mindful of rewarding players
-no sense of the timeline for recalling him but is pretty high on their radar

Cam Fowler:
-Ducks are just not very good
-compares Fowler to OEL's resurgence

Rasmus Andersson:
-no rush in Calgary
-if they trade Andersson, it sends a message that management no longer believes in the team
-feels like "pie in the sky" to discuss trade speculation involving him

Yeah that was part of the miscommunication saga between player and mgmt where mgmt more or less told him he's going to be in the nhl and then sent him to the ahl that is part of the weirdness.

The current "no ice time in any league development plan" for a recent 6 overall pick on a team that has a crappy defense and is not seriously trying to be competitive is also really weird.

If Dobson really is available, Hughes - Dobson would basically be a dream pairing.
Dobson isn’t the right kind of defense partner. His value came from #1 deployment including powerplay and he’d lose that immediately on the Canucks. He’s a two way player, but he’s stronger offensively than defensively and is not the player I would target for anchoring a second pairing. Player like Fowler if he’s at half cost would probably be a better fit.

It is odd regarding his healthy scratches, but apparently he’s threatening to not report to the AHL and his current play isn’t outperforming their current depth. CBJ fans have said he’s been underwhelming.

Columbus fans are arguing he doesn't skate well or use his size which leads to keep getting caught. Even taken at face value, I have to wonder if a big part of any struggles the kid has right now is with how horrendous the Jackets have treated his development.

I don't know if we have the assets to pry him away but damn would I like to try. Both him and Byram are actual projects I'd like to see Tocchet work with over Desharnais.

Having seen both, Byram is better but riskier with his concussion history (with the prior concussion-risky players Canucks procured, I’m just risk averse at this point). I wouldn’t be opposed but wouldn’t overpay or get in a bidding war.

I’m still hoping somehow Andersson or Gavrikov or Fowler at half happen.

Yeah, I wouldn't pay a steep price when neither one of them as wowed on their respective teams. But if it was a prospect swap (not Lekk or Willander) and a pick, I'd definitely take the gamble.

Of the latter three though. I really can't see Andersson or Gavrikov being available. Even if Calgary does decide to sell near the deadline, there's no way we're getting Andersson without Willander+ and I don't think that's a good trade for us when we won't be able to keep him.

Fowler is a great on ice fit for us but I'm not sure how a trade could be made between us and Anaheim.

Yeah it's a weird situation. Zero ice time for any prolonged period of time is such a catastrophe for prospects.

It'll probably get corrected. The last situation on this level of weirdness for a prospect was probably the atrociously stupid D+1 plan for Shane Wright and that got fixed before it dragged out for too long, it'll probably be the same for Jiricek.

I'd love that but unfortunately we signed Myers to a 3 year extension so if we somehow add Jiricek, one of Willander/Jiricek is getting moved or switching sides because it won't be Hronek/Myers.

Same issue with the Andersson pipe dream.

The previous management tried to do what was best for him (AHL) but he bitchmoaned and complained at every turn. It looks like the current regime doesn't know what to do with him - perhaps they're scared that he won't report if he's sent down - or will formally request a trade?

The assessment of BJ fans re skating and overall defensive play is pretty bang on if you ask me. He generates most of his points on the PP and is not a good ES player at either end of the ice or in transition. Maybe he gets there eventually, but i wouldn't be making any big bets on that.
