Some of the takes here are pretty unbelievable. I do think being Captain has added a little pressure to Matty. He has easily earned the benefit of the doubt in my mind. Yeah it was a terrible play to end the game in Boston, but no-one mentions the dozens of good plays he makes every game. Look at all the top end players and they tend to have more giveaways than the average player, just a fact. He is a pretty responsible guy usually. Even his shooting is off so far this year... shots into the crest that are usually top corner or finding a hole. He will settle in. If you are truly a fan you can show the guy some love and patience. Dissect the good and the bad, of course... we all do. But if you're just a pessimistic hater that will complain no matter what, then go at it... in some other forum.

The guy has had infinite opportunities to show that he's not a choking loser and he's incapable. A couple more playoffs no shows, assuming he's even capable of getting a team to the playoffs as captain. And that will be that, he can go be a 3rd line player on a contender and people can claim it wasn't his fault because he produces in a lesser role.

Because with this group the regular season is all we have. Well that and a playoff round.

He’s forcing it because he’s not scoring and is frustrated. It’s not just being unlucky.

He’ll definitely get better than this as the season goes on but he’s been bad this year and no getting around it.

It will be very difficult for him to end the season as the second best player in the league, which his contract suggests.

The best thing he did was take a roughing penalty vs the Blues. A slight pulse but otherwise a miserable start to the season with his new contract and captain status.

This season will be very telling.

Most likely due to the pressure of being the captain now.

The other very real scenario is that Berube‘s systems are just not working for him. I don’t think that he is the right coach for this team.

Third consecutive year that he and Marner couldnt produce yet they are being shoved down our throats. I get it..coaches think that they can fix things. Just like GMs think they can.

More and more we change management, the more the results stay the same. This 3, now 4 forwards making 11+ doesnt work. At least these players anyhow.

Matthews results have been far worse than in a typical year.

Goal scoring isn't linear per season (except for Mike Bossy lol) I wouldn't be surprised to see him only pot 35-40 this season. That being the case, I wouldn't also proclaim he's regressed just yet, too. Let's not forget he's capable of a couple of back to back multi goal games which would bring him right back where we would expect him to be. His shooting percentage is down this year and it doesn't look like he's had the same quality of feeds this year as he might normally get.
