Is this the greatest hat trick of all time? This along with new goal song will be the turning point everyone points to.

In their own barn opening night the mighty Leafs score 1 even strength goal.
Keefe had to shrink his bench, took to double shifting Matthews line ... in game ONE of the season! lol
And they still needed to go to a shoot out to get the win, ........against the lotto-Habs. ha!

Pretty sure I watched the entire game and then the Canucks/Oilers game after that, lmao. You think I missed the season opener ? I've missed maybe 5 Leaf games in the past 10 years, I didn't notice Slaf because he was a non-impact player for almost the entire game. You noticed him because he was your recent #1 overall pick. Sorry if you're offended that I thought he actually didn't play because he was that invisible.
Cant argue that on Slaf. He looked like Marner in a play off game out there.

Sure, if he continues to score three a game, it will look like a steal. But I guarantee most who had misgivings about it were thinking more what he does in the regular season and playoffs (or rather, not do) when it comes to assessing his new contract.
My point is he is one of the best players in the game today and is paid like it.

They'll need 6 goals if their opponent score 5. 1 won't work. Leafs don't play low scoring 1-0 or 2-1 games. That's why they'll never go far in the playoffs.

Last two playoffs game they won the score was 2-1 Leafs… their problem is that they’re all or nothing and can’t seem to consistently show up with 3-4 goals, it’s 7 goals or 1 it feels like.

To be fair Matthews entire career has been in a high scoring era. No one compares to Ovechkin at this point.

Ovechkin’s first few seasons in the league were higher scoring than Matthews and he’s also had double the powerplay minutes up to the same point of their careers. Don’t get it twisted by thinking Matthews isn’t on the same level as a goal scorer up to the age of 26. Infact these next few seasons are where Matthews should pull ahead, but after that point he’ll have his work cut out for him because I don’t expect him to age as well as Ovechkin

It's close by raw stats, it's not comparable by adjusted stats: Ovechkin's first 7 seasons 33 goals and 126 points ahead of Matthews.

No, old Ovechkin was only 2 goals behind young Matthews, playing in the same scoring environment winning 3 Rockets. Young Ovechkin would tear apart this league.

And ignore completely that Ovechkin literally nearly doubled Matthews in powerplay time but doesn’t even score at a higher rate on the powerplay

Just a single bit of critical thinking and lack of extreme bias would help you see they are very comparable as goal scorers through their age 26 seasons. You don’t really have to look any further than how they compare to the rest of the NHL

one player hit the 90 point mark in Matthews rookie season. His 40 goals that year were good enough for 2nd overall. Offense has gone up the last few years but it wasn't like that when he entered the league.

He also played 17 minutes that year and 2:28 on the powerplay. What happens when Ovechkin played anything close to that? Still over 18 minutes and not his usual 5+ minutes on the powerplay but still close to 4 minutes which is more than Matthews ever played, he had 33 goals and 69 points.

No, but it was a hat trick. No more or less great than anyone else's. The first of the three was an important milestone for Matthews, and not everyone likes the new goal song.

Yup, they got the win though, and are moving on to game 2. They would have done the same if it had been a loss.

Matthews is a great goal scorer and I don't think that anyone will debate that but in Leaf land, it has to be about more than just scoring 50 goals in the regular season.

So in a thread about the Leafs’ best player getting a hat trick in the first game of an 82 game season, you’re mocking the Leafs for beating the Habs in a shootout?

While on the same night, the team with the best player in the league gets crushed 8-1….

How about you try not making your hate so obvious :dunno:
