Matty is all about da $$$ .. and Leafs have da $$$ ... he will sign on folks .. relationships in hockey mean very little .. players follow da best $$$ for themselves .. he and Mitch are not even friends .. i am told his only real friend is Bunting .. if anything with 1 or 2 of core guys traded there will be room to keep Bunting now .. and they should keep Bunting and add more guys like him too

While they may have had a relationship, not sure Matthews was making it seem like he cared about whoever is in charge when looking at his contract demands from insiders.

Maybe the new guy will make it more likely for him to sign 8 years. Maybe not.

That's what MLSE risked by playing chicken with Dubas.

The New GM also might have a different philosophy regarding these super high salaries. Matthews might go "15/per" and the new GM goes, "nope". Whomever is here will not have any ties with Matthews.

Proof?

So if he wants $12.7m Leafs should walk away?
Absolutely, if he wants more than he is getting now we trade him. He won’t do better over the next 8 years than he did in his 1st 8 years. Why pay more, especially when many said he was overpaid the 1st 8.

Personally, I'd love to see this.

Say they take 2 weeks to sort out the GM role. Gives the next guy just under 1 month to decide if he's going to keep or trade Matthews at the draft.

Though I'd imagine anyone the board hires will be given a mandate to re-sign him at all costs.

My understanding is that the Leafs have a number in mind and they will have to agree on term. Matty should be easy. If they decide to trade Marner, that will be tougher. Most likely they move 88 and that can even be done after July 1st.

Hopefully not that wouldnt be smart. Mathews is not worth throwing all that cap space at. If he wants to sign for a fair deal great. New management should use common sense. If Mathews wants a pile of money trade his ass. The team is need of a rebuild not a retool anyways. Move whatever they can for the best price.

Personally I don't see ownership allowing the next GM to do a draft centric rebuild. There may be shake up trades, but I think Matthews will be made a priority in to get extended, especially since a decision has to be made fairly quickly and that's the most straightforward way of dealing with it for a new GM

I'd agree I think it will be a fairly quick extension for Matthews. Likely the biggest issue will be term - but this will be by far the main priority and focus for any new hire to get it out of the way so they can think more about the other decisions

Matty was always the easiest, because they know they have to spend the most on him anyway. 6'3" 25 year old, 2-way centers who score 60 goals don't grow on trees. He's completely irreplaceable.

I think that negotiation will show what Shanny has in terms of being a hockey manager and negoitator. If it ends up being 14.5 x 5, then we know it wasn't only Dubas' fault these stars got overpaid.

AM will wait out the clock on the NMC and then ask for 14 was what I thought will happen.

Now the pushover is gone. Might change plans.

AH yes...Dubas is not at fault for the contracts he signed. LOL

Of course they are

I am confident Matty is signing here.
You taking odds? :p

New gm will not tolerate this bullshit

Take 12.5 or whatver he says or you are done in this market

That's what I'd do with Kyle. Why not?

Now that the piggy ban is gone...likely not a play that will work

I'm convinced AM was done the minute Dubbas handed JT the C. I have a feeling the AM stuff will get real messy.
