Matthews last contract on 5 years term at the 4th highest Cap hit% based on these 3 ELC years was unprecedented.

Is there a NHL comparable contract that supports $11.634 mil and 14.6 CH% (4th highest) and only 5 years (including 4 RFA years) on his previous deal?

Its easy to pick out the anomaly here, so what makes people so certain after taking the Leafs organization to task on his last deal, particularly to set up this next contract at an even higher AAV, that history is not going to repeat?.

If people believe that Matthews is just going to take a slight bump up to $12.6 mil (MacKinnon new rate) then why not just factor that into his last deal if its just +$1 mil per year ($3 mil total) more AAV for the next 3 years and signed a 8 year term originally? If you spread that $3 mil over 8 years that = + $375k more AVV per year above his current $11.634 mil.

In terms of his RFA deal - he ended up with a lesser cap hit% than Malkin did and a greater cap % than Toews along with comparable term to both.

Which to me is basically where one would expect him to go.

I don't see anything suggesting that we should expect Matthews to ask for 15 million. Even if the cap increases all the way to 88 million by the 2024-2025 season, that would be a caphit % of 17%, which is what Crosby got with his first major contract.

Tage Thompson for Matthews. Who says no?

I guess Buffalo since Matthews wouldn't resign. Damn Tage is amazing

Except Malkin won the Stanley Cup, The Conn Smythe (playoff MVP) and Art Ross (regular season scoring leader) in his contract year.

Jonathan Toews also won the Stanely Cup and the Conn Smythe in his contract year.

Pretty nice that Leaf players get to use Stanley Cup & Conn Smythe winners as their comparables coming off Zero playoff wins. :wg:

Curious to know if Matthews had won the Cup and the Conn Smythe this year would Leaf fans still be thinking he would be getting his old CH%?

FWIW: If the Salary Cap 2024-25 goes up to $87,500,000 (projected) and Auston gets his old CH% of 14.6% = $12,775,000 (highest AAV paid player in the league)

Why are there people so worried if we trade mathews.
He has never reached 100 points
Yes he is a big Center that leaves us wanting more.
Stamkos rage dolled him
This yr 40 goals
For 13 or 14 mil we can get 2 or 3 players that combined will score 75 goals
Example of recent contracts
Verhaeghe 4.125 mil 42 goals
McCann 5 mil
Nick Paul 3.15 mil

The sky won't be falling if we trade him

Um, in his MVP and Lindsay winning season he had 106 points and 60 goals in just 73 games.

Fun fact about Matthews;

In the season he scores at a clip of .62gpg
In the playoffs he scores at a clip of .44gpg

In what world can you win with leaders like JT, Mitch and Auston who's play goes DOWN in the playoffs?

The excuses made are awful too, all great players have bad series sure, but they also have GREAT ones, Auston does not. 0/8 in terms of having a great series, we just have to pat him on the back when he gets even close to replicating his season play.

They become perimeter players and won't sacrifice and go to the net hard which is why they get goalied every year

I know its really unlikely, but I'd really like him to set the tone and take a extremely team friendly deal that says "I got my payday already, I want to win now" and sign 8 years at a 9.5 mil cap hit.

Will it happen? 99.9% chance no, but if he really wants to win he should. We paid him and Marner like they were winners and they didnt win anything, its time they take a discount imo. Obviously 9.5 is a pipe dream but it would do wonders to not have guys over 10.
If you want to consider performance then i guess you are right, unfortunately there are 30 other teams that would jump on offering Am whatever he wanted

We already paid him 11 million to dissappear in the playoffs, if someone wants to give him a raise, then can be my guest.

We can get two great players for the 13-14 million he will want.

That contract was signed after a promising 1st round playoff loss to Washington and a G7 loss to Boston the year after. At the time Leafs org had a strong belief they would be playing for a Cup by now. If you think none of the other 30 teams will jump on a 14-15m aav contract, then you underestimate the feeling of 'HOPE' he would provide to 30 GMs. If none of these GMs get in the Mathews sweepstakes after July 1, they should all be fired!!!

I think Matthews is getting $13 million tops...what the pandemic has taught many GMs is you can't go crazy and borrow money from the future because you think the cap is going to keep going up...he should be paid according to his comparables, like MacKinnon...it's not like $13 million is chump change.
MacKinnon took a team discount. He could have got way more on the open market. Matthews is the furthest thing from being the guy that takes team discounts lol.

It is what it is .. Leafs are not letting their 1OA pick go unless they get a boatload back .. #1C's are limited maybe 5-10 in league
yeah well no guff, eh

no matter how much you wish/hope winning the trade 1 for 1 isn't going to happen as he's a top 10 player in the league even us old fools know that

but

Adrien Kempe
Quinton Byfield
Franceso Pinelli
2023 2nd
2024 1st 2nd

this would mean a lot to improving the team while creating 5m in valuable cap space

This guy is just so injury prone now.

Wrists slowly turning into dust. How can you justify making this guy the highest payed player by a lot when you can't even rely on him to stay healthy for an entire season.

Next with a new 5 yr 14 mil contract
He has the same yr as this
Injured for 15 games.

Marner or Nylander have been traded.

This yr he was using his one timer more .
His wrist shot has more accuracy .
Maybe the wrist wasn't fully healed.
It was something I noticed this yr.
