There is not really a choice. Shanahan and Pridham will have to do without Dubas unless the GM position is addressed before hand.
Not ideal.
If I was AM..I'd run out the clock on the NMC and ask for the moon. Why not? You want me to walk for nothing? Dubas is easy.

You'd have to assume this throws a wrench in how he proceeds. Ams agent had a bad day. LOL

If I am AM’s camp, I will ask for the moon and sign a contract now while the Leafs MGT is in chaos mode.

Bc there is a good chance that the new GM wont let him dictate terms

Why would AM give up the leverage? He'll run out the clock imho.
You think the Leafs would just sit idle if he did this?

They will have an internal deadline to have a deal in principle, they willl share this deadline with his agent.

If they are searching for a GM I would have assistants reach out to the league about offers. Try and feel out what each player is worth in trade, including Matthews.
Consider this akin to a nice house going on sale and tabling multiple offers.

At this point no player is untouchable. Only J.T has a complete no-trade, all three of the core can be moved.

As I feared six years ago, this team is the perennial SJ Sharks or Oilers of the early 2000s. Playoffs end in misery. I was hoping I wouod be wrong, never thought I would be this right.

That’s more to do with players not performing like the regular season more than the direction of the club and MGT

If Pridham tables a deal now to ascertain intent and Matthews says “I don’t know I’ll give you my firm response on July 1,” do you think that Toronto will wait?

I think Toronto will find a trading partner instead. Because waiting means he is not interested.

If we learned anything from Johnny Hockey it's...

If you are unsure of the player's intentions, trade him.

If matthews won’t re sign you deal him.
His value won’t be the best because he only has one year left, but they could retain a chunk of his salary to make him available to every team in the league. They will be toast without him next year anyway and that would result in a frenzy of trade possibilities.

If AM do that, he is traded. Ofcourse his agent might talk with other teams about resigning…and they can drag it long enough. However, the new Leafs GM might play hard ball and will just trade to to any teams for a good enough package.

If AM wants to stay, he will sign if not, then trade him

OG Dubas hater here too. This was all so predictable. What an unnecessary gamble MLSE took hiring Dubas. Focused more on being progressive than winning. This has been the worst 4-5 years of my life as a Leafs fan. Watching him piss away this opportunity has been gutting.

SO if you don't have in on paper before July 1st you trade him?

It's balsy.
Of course you trade him. You can't let a #1 pick and 60 goal scorer just walk for nothing. Even if it is just First and Second Round picks in return. Cap Space has value too.

You could still sign him after July 1. But it of course limits your trade options as the NMC kicks in. I'm not disagreeing with your position that July 1 is the cutoff but it's a balsy call.

Of course. Teams will gamble even if Matthews is non-commital. Hell a team like.Arizona would definitely do so. Hand over 3 First rounders and a couple of prospects, get at lesst one full season of a packed house and interest.

If it fails and they can't squeeze an Arena deal and Matthews.walks, who care? The tesm will be in a other city anyways the won't even technically lose "their"picks.i

Matthews says he loves it here. He will love it even more when he compares the royal treatment he receives here with his games in an OHL arena.

He should return as much as the Sabres got for Eichel or more.

  • 2021-Nov-04 Traded from Buffalo Sabres with conditional round 3 pick in the 2023 draft to Vegas Golden Knights for Peyton Krebs, Alex Tuch, conditional round 1 pick in the 2022 draft (Noah Ostlund) and conditional round 2 pick in the 2023 draft

Ideally you want something agreed upon by draft week. At least in principle.
Otherwise, yes you could sign after July 1st, but if Matthews doesn’t like it, he could just stop negotiating and wait to judge UFA. It’s balsy either way.

Bruins managed to sign Pasta who was having an MVP year in March for less money than the highest paid winger and for $250K more than Marner but for 8 years. If only we could be so lucky with Matty.

I've told a couple of former Companies I worked for that I wanted to be there long term and saw a future there... Lasted maybe 3-6 months more before moving on to greener pastures.

Let’s see what the new GM can do.
Either way, I’m at the point if they can get Matthews signed and retooled around him, great.
If not and they move them all, so be it.

if we learned anything from Auston Matthews injuries it's.....
trade him.

just hope we can find a dancing partner.
We'd be able to find a dance partner if there were more dances left on his contract. With only ONE year left, I'm not sure how much we'll get.

There's a better chance the President hiring the new GM won't let Matthews camp dictate terms anymore than the previous GM dictated terms.

Player trade "values" are so comically absurd in the media

"He's got 6 years left, no one will want him. Have to pay to trade him"

"One year left before UFA, no one will want him, might get a 3rd if you're lucky"

"Only two years left before UFA, maybe get a late first if you're lucky, have to take back a garbage contract though"

Trade deadline roles around: "3 1sts, top prospect, roster player or don't even bother calling"

These guys have no idea.

The new GM , with a new contract, will not be under the pressure that dubas faced at the trade deadline.
So no more trading picks for rentals.
