From you no doubt but your a known homer with the constant need to shill for the core/dubas when he was here.

You are part of the select few who gladly bend over backwards to defend the absurd overpayments for our non elite core players without caring for the cost it has on the team's ability to build a winner

In reality though that is what a dude as limited as AM34 should get at 4 years.

We aren't talking a franchise player like Mack

~94 pt pace in a league where the top guy scored 153... matthews is a joke, similar to you claiming your not biased

9 million is what you want Matthews to take over 4 years... I'll let that statement speak for itself and move on, can't argue with someone who doesn't live in reality.

Contract should be based on playoff performance.
So players who don't make the playoffs would have pay back their salaries?
Whether sports, war, business or anything else, it's defined by who wins. The world doesn't celebrate the leadership qualities of a loser. It's just the way it is.
There was a time in sports when non-winning teams and players were often honoured. That was before the money went insane

13.85 x 4.
Thats such a horrible deal for the Leafs.

Those non-winning players were honored bc of their careers and how much they had done to the local community... not after a few seasons with the team.

Depending on the return, it could have been feasible. But the lack of NTC doesn't carry as much weight if Matthews wouldn't negotiate long-term with the team trading for him. So either way, he'd have a massive say in where he ends up, which would hurt his value. The Leafs are in a tough spot and Matthews knows it. So does Nylander and Marner. The team paid these guys well last time, have given them everything they wanted, and have zilch to show for it. This time, it's up to the players to give in a little.
I agree with you nut I do not think the players will give an inch. They negotiate like they have won multiple cups instead of 1 round in the 7 years they have been there.

Supposedly Kyper was on the fan 2 days ago saying 13.5 too, with term being where the negotiation is.

Can anybody confirm?

From my understanding the Leafs have 3 Leaders. Tavares and Rielly lead by their work ethic and people listen when they speak as the are typically reserved. Marner is the other leader and is more the Lee things loose type, bonds with all the players. Matthews is just looked at as the ‘guy’. The ‘guy’ is who is looked at to carry them, not necessarily lead.

He’s in the radio pretty much every day.

He just explained it. Matthews got the best of both worlds last time around, an overpaid AAV on a contract that walked him right go UFA, without the team getting the benefit of years 6-8 where he might actually be worth more than his cap hit.
He didn't and below he says about 75 things which are all contradictory. Y'all just picking and choosing things that apparently only count against a player when it's Matthews.
Who said anything about McDavid? I'm talking about 2-3 players instead of Matthews.
You did. You can insert MacKinnon, Matthews, Pasternak if that makes you feel better, the point remains. Three Hyman's aren't as valuable as any of those guys.
Their deals were the highest AAV for 2-3 years, but after the cap rises, they are no longer the highest and ultimately become very team-friendly.
They weren't actually, I don't actually know if Crosby ever played a game with his AAV being the highest, but this same thing will happen to Matthews at 13.Whatever, you know?

And since the commitments were for 8 years, the team then has 5 years on the back-end to add better talent and depth. Example: Leon Draisaitl. When he signed his "high AAV" deal years ago, 8.5 mil per was hefty. However, since Tavares signed for 11 mil x 8 years ago, Draisaitl has been making 2.5 mil less than him!
Nothing says Matthews makes too much like pointing out he only makes a couple hundred thousand more than John Tavares.

If Draisaitl played hard-ball with the Oilers and only signed short-term deals, they could never get ahead by paying him and McDavid a new max AAV every 4-5 years. Short-term deals are poison pills for teams and Matthews is one of the rare megastars who keeps insisting on them.

Crosby - Has never signed a max term deal since his ELC.
Malkin - Twice signed a deal of 5 or less.
Toews - Signed a 5 year deal first, first player over 10 million AAV in cap era, has made it past the first round once since signing, leaves team in shambles, considered team friendly signing
Kane - See Toews
Kopitar - Signed two non-max term contracts
Giroux - Second contract was not max term
McDavid - 16.67% of cap, best player in the NHL, congrats?
Draisaitl -
MacKinnon - Signed bridge deal, then only signed when his AAV was higher than McDavid
Kucherov - signed bridge deal
Hedman - signed bridge deal
Stamkos - signed bridge deal
Hughes - signed bridge deal
Pastrnak - signed bridge deal, expirede until March to sign last contract to maximize AAV
Tkachuk - signed bridge deal and demanded a trade
Dahlin - I've no idea why you've added him
Stutzle - Had 34 NHL goals when he signed a contract most laughed at, one of only three people you've listen to sign max term on second contact

... all signed 8-year deals, bypassing a new max AAV in 3-5 years, in order to help their teams contend for years. But when it comes to Matthews, nope, not interested. He wants max cap every 4-5 years. Sorry, that's a selfish, one-sided approach.
At this point it seems like you're just saying names without knowledge of their contract history.

What I can extrapolate from these examples is that you would think Auston Matthews has excellent leadership skills if he signs a max team deal, is this correct?

I find most of these statements really bs. They can say from sources about a contract but NOT ONE of these insiders can tell you if AM has a leg problem, a back problem which affected his skating or a wrist problem which hurt his shot. NOT ONE can tell you what he is doing in the off season to overcome his physical problems of last season.
Pay him 13.5 per for his 2022/23 season would be dumb.

Keeping guys loose by joking around or whatever else is a good thing, every team needs some of that. Not sure I'd call that leadership though.

More so it made me more pissed at the marner contract. His threshold should have been 9 or 9.5
It is hard to compare the Maner deal to this deal for me. Signed at different times, different lengths left, Marner has better stats but probably plays a different on-ice roll. Every time a new contract is signed by someone else I also try to compare it to the Leafs, but it can be hard.

I just go back to my original thoughts on the level/price of contracts...The good, the leafs dont' have any big dollar 'busts' with contracts. The bad: The Leafs don't have any 'deals' with contracts.

Are posters still going to pretend what Matthews and Marner got is the normal? These guys are trying to make money and don’t care about winning. That’s fine they’re allowed for that but I don’t want to hear that this is normal across the league. My issues with Matthews and Marner are the term they signed for.
