"If Matthews re-signs, it can be anywhere from three to eight seasons and likely put him in the NHL’s highest pay bracket, the $14-million to $15-million range. But hard numbers are still to be exchanged in the coming days, assuming the optimism generated by the past week continues."
Auston Matthews-Brad Treliving meeting cautiously optimistic start for new Maple Leafs deal
Auston Matthews, agent Judd Moldaver and new Leaf GM Brad Treliving have initiated contract talks to get the Leaf star signed long term.torontosun.com
I simply don’t buy this nonsense. Reeks of the media trying to fill the deadest part of the off-season with something.
His last contract was rich, but at least within the realm of reason. And after two years, not enough of a track record to say much about the playoffs.
Five years later, coming off a down season and with a lack of playoff success hanging around his neck, he’s going to clear the highest paid player in the league (who just won a cup) by $1.5-$2.5m?
If that happens then why do we even have a GM? Matthews might as well just write up his own contract and submit it to the league.
