Hopefully he realizes that if he fails, he will be remembered as one of the highest paid underachievers in league history. My advice, take a discount and win the fans' goodwill. You will need it when times get tough. Just ask Mitch shambles in my head Marner.
See this is the thing...he wouldn't lose any real money by signing, what we fans consider, a sweetheart deal because the media would make him look like a Saint and he would have endorsers lining up around the block compared to now. I am sure a lot of companies considering signing AM and MM to deals probably do focus group tests and find a lot of people are not crazy about them milking this town for every drop and wouldn't flock to buy the product they are going to hawk.

I really don't understand why AM deserves to be the highest paid player in the league.
I don't even think he is the best player in the division.
It is time to tell AM that he is not the best player in the league and at best he is top 5(McD, Drai, Kuch, Mack and him-thats debatable). But all the other 4 players in the Top 5 either won a Cup or won rounds in the playoffs.
Who is the best player in the division then?

Please say Kucherov so we can tear that opinion to strips .... please.
Or Pastrnak.
That'd be better.
Tkachuk is too easy to dispute.

Maybe an old Crosby?

True, you can't make it official with the NHL until July 1st because of the CBA and until his last year officially begins ...

However I don't think that stops negotiations and even coming to terms on a deal (in principle) prior to July 1st.

Here is some of the latest chatter.

They're even speculating on the $$ and term and breakdown,

Ouch!

That shows a lot of character on Matthews' part, not going for $14M and leaving $250,000 on the table for others. :sarcasm:

The Leafs better hope/pray the Cap goes UP(!) because between Reilly, Nylander, Marner, JT and Matthews, there's not gonna be much meat left on the bone.

I have no idea what these guys are like outside the rink so I cant talk to that but as players for the TML I went from comparing Marners game when he first started for us to a little like Gretzky and I was over the moon excited with the potential Matthews showed. Now after the losses (the way they lose) and the smug non responsibility answers they give when losing to the over payed entitlement shananigans I could care less if they are showed the door. Each year has gotten harder to root for these guys. Reilly is about the only one I feel gets it out of our core guys.
Seems like a you problem.

Why were you comparing anyone to a young Wayne?

Just just incredibly stupid and begging for disappointment.

How about appreciating the players for who they are and what they have done (99, 97, 94, Selke finalist winger, 60 goal, 106 point, 4 time in 7 seasons 40+ goal scorer, Hart, Pearson, 2 time Rocket 2 time 2nd most goals in 7 years, defensively sound)...

Reilly is at $7.5, Matthews will be at $13.75, Marner will want $12, and Nylander will want $8M. Even if JT decided to stay at $5M, that's $45M+ with 5 players. Ouch!

I'd say world cup mvp and world player of the year and/or runner up this year, might still be at the top of the game.
Sure.

If you box score watch like most moron Leafs fans do.

If you don't understand the sports, I guess.

Soccer has a terrible history of awarding players for past accomplishments and not for actual performance, case in point: Figo winning the Ballon D'Or when he did because he lost it the previous season.

Or Cannavaro winning it in 2006 when Italy won the WC despite not deserving the award in any way shape or form.

I'm convinced that too many fans of this team here look at the box score and make their judgement based on goals and assists, because they have no clue how to judge the play on the ice.

I HATE Figo!!! - most overpaid player in all of sports.

Full Disclosure : I have NO idea who Figo is. :)

Are you sure? Didn't fans say the same thing 6 years ago?

Is Spotsnet going to UP their deal with the NHL? The last deal never made any money.

The difference was the pandemic shut down gate revenues 100% which threw everything out of wack. By now The players will have paid back the escrow debt with the leagues setting the stage for the next round of growth.

Worth noting that following the awful 2008 recession the league experienced just 1 year of stagnat growth and then immediately returned to multi million yearly increases.

Theres going to be a pretty big jump next offseason. At the low end probably 4ish million for 2024

For the Leafs sake, I hope you're right.

First of all I wasnt comparing him to Gretzky....I saw similarities in how they played the game, it was a compliment.

Dont really understand the need to be nasty while sharing opinions but good for you, you sure told me.

1-
How many cup do you think kucherov would won if vasilevskiy is not there? The answer is pretty easy, its 0

Colorado not just because of mackinnon, how many round mackinnon had won at 25? 2

Draisaitl how many round won at 25? 1
Mcdavid? 3

2- youre comparing a TEAM SUCCES to an individual player, winnong a cup its not 1 player

Did he deserve to be highest paid player? Yeah and it will be probably for only 1 season... next season Draisaitl will probably sign higher deal, in 2 year it will be mcdavid, in 3rd year maybe it will be Bedard

Oh I'm sorry.

When you said:

"went from comparing Marners game when he first started for us to a little like Gretzky"

That you were comparing him to Gretzky.
You know, because that's what you wrote.

Why anyone would compare a kid to Gretzky and then use that comparison to justifyhow disappointing the kid turns out when he's not Gretzky, is just bonkers.

Marner plays like Marner.
He may have bits and pieces from others before, but it's just dumb to label him to be another "X" and get upset if he turns out not to be that.

It's a symptom of the lack of original thought in this market.

Too many rely on the opinions and comparisons of the media when they make these stupid labels.

Says heat maps dude
But noone understands hockey like you as you keep saying

The bolded pretty much highlights how I feel right now.

I didn't think the trade deadline was good, no.

I have blamed Dubas plenty for the problems with the organization. After the Montreal series I have been blaming mainly Shanahan and ownership. They're the ones that kept Dubas around.

Even scarier Shanahan had a new contract for him.

I see no point in flogging a dead horse. Dubas is gone. A GM that didn't even want to be here and who was fired for reasons other than performance related isn't accountability in my eyes.

Even Keefe still has a job ffs.

Either Shanahan actively participated in botching the rebuild. Or he idly sat by and watched while Dubas did it. It's one of the other, there is no other choice.

Either way it doesn't look good on Shanahan.
Fair enough

Reilly is at $7.5, Matthews will be at $13.75, Marner will want $12, and Nylander will want $8M. Even if JT decided to stay at $5M, that's $45M+ with 5 players. Ouch!
Ill take that bet

When, after round 1, tons of fans were all over the "road to the cup final against Edmonton", I was one of the people telling Leafs fans to shut up that we hadn't won anything and hadn't earned the right to shit on anyone else.

Just as I wasn't too high on this team then, I'm not as down on them now.

This fanbase is filled with the people who go, freely, from extreme highs to extreme lows.

It's a sign of not understanding that others are out there trying to win, and that at any point, anyone can win.

So call me heat map guy if you like, but I'll be fine knowing that I'm not of the majority on most things Leafs, going back to Mats, Kaberle, McCabe.

Kessel
Phaneuf
Gardiner
Matthews

lol yeah the Leafs have just been unlucky the heat maps say so!
Maybe watch the games and decide what you see rather than heat maps +-hits etc and tone down the condescending bs
