Quick math suggests he would have been on pace for 60 but he would have had to play 82.

Quick math suggested that he was on pace for 76 goals through the same number of games this season, but reality has played out and he just hit 60 with 9 games to go.

There are no guarantees. There’s a very select few players in NHL who get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to projecting out high paces over entire seasons, and Matthews isn’t one of them.

Similar to Crosby fans, Matthews fans are getting a little distracted by the what if and pace game, when the player is actually still doing wonderful things.

So just clarify here, you’re allowed to assume he’d regress, but he’s not allowed to assume he’d keep pace, because you don’t want to think he could keep pace after he did keep pace 2 of the next 3 years. Sound logic my friend. Keep that up

So Bure and AM are the only ones in the group of multiple 60 goal seasons to not be on a Cup winner?

What's next? We're going to start tracking the fastest to 10 goals?

We still track 50 in 50 which aside being a round number is quite anecdotical.

Let's face it, if Matthews was the first us born guy to eat 25+ banana peels in one sitting you guys would celebrate it.

Can he do it next year again barring injuries?
Definitely possible but tight. His goals per game played pace for the past 5 years (yes half decade) translates to exactly 60 goals over 82 GP every year. Not likely to play 82 though. So definitely in his reach but not easy.

Actually yes. Over 120 goals alone were one timers on the power play ONLY. I dont think there is any reason to make things up when it can be verified right on NHL.com

No it was 92 powerplay one timers from the left dot through 644 career goals. That is right on NHL.com

Fair. I'll amend my statement to say that there's a very good chance that he would have had three 60 goal seasons by now if not for a global pandemic.

He and Ovechkin could have hit 60 that year.

Well Matthews is only 26 and plays in a 32 team league. Not so crazy really, there's a lot of time for this to change.

What year was this for Ovechkin?

But if healthy enough during the games he does play he probably does it in under 75 again, considering he really broke out 4 seasons ago and played injured all of last season.

Cool story. AM34 is the best scorer in the world, but it does not change the fact that McDavid is in another stratosphere. He will end up with more assists than AM34 points, and as many primary assists as AM34 goals.
No one cares about secondary assists in the weak pacific division.

We are talking about GOALS here

Am I keeping up with he literally did it 2 of the next 3 years? Doesn’t sound that crazy big guy. Nice dunk
"Nobody said it was a fact. Your arguments are weak and come off as salty"

You keep contradicting yourself

10 times a player 27 and older has scored 60+ so historically very possible he does it again (he's 26 now).
Phil Esposito holds the record with two 60+ seasons over 30 years old (ages 32 and 31).

I read your post a few times and carefully considered my rebuttal. However…

You got me on this one.

I’ve long pushed back on the Crosby folks because they would say similar things about those shortened seasons, i.e. “he would have hit 130-140 three years in a row”. He never proved to have earned this benefit of the doubt before or after.

Now here is the Matthews crowd saying something similar. “He would have hit 60 in 2020-2021”. As you pointed out, he hit it in two of the three seasons since. He’s earned much more benefit of the doubt.

I still don’t like how these things are sometimes treated as if they actually happened, but you helped me understand more with this particular case.

100%. It’s just that it’s a game of inches. Despite unreal health luck, OV could never do it even twice. Esposito is the only person NOT named Matthews to do it at least twice outside the run and gun era.

He can for sure, it just isn’t easy.
