The all-time single playoff run record for goals is 19. That number has never seemed unreachable to me.

Matthews can definitely beat that. Obviously, this implies leading his team to the finals at least, but I think that's 100% a record within his reach.

I'm far from a Leafs fan, but I wouldn't mind seeing that happen.

For sure.

All it takes is a hockey player to get incredibly hot during a brief period of the season. 19 is definitely not some sort of unreachable record.

Just a couple of years ago Evande Kane had 13 goals in 15 games, a lil bit back further Johan Franzen had 13 goals in 16 games and while both players are good in their own - they're not the type of player you'd expect to score at a record pace. But they both did. So Matthews a prime goalscorer should definitely be able to pot 19 - if Leafs are able to go far in the playoffs... which I honestly am not so sure about in it's current state. But that's another question.

You don't even need to go that far back.

Just last year Draisaitl had 13 goals in 12 games....and in reality, it was really 13 goals in his first 8 games, since he didn't score any his last 4 playoff games.

He NEEDS to do something in late April. I do not want to hear the big 4 in Toronto say, "We lost but we learned a lot about ourselves and we know this group can win going forward".
Ha! Then don't watch TSN for a few days after ......
Marner : "we have a lit of confidence in this core"

You don't even need to go that far back.

amazing .....play off hockey 13 goals in 8 games last season!! wtf?
Mathews had 5 in 11 games.

Let's compare it to the Habs because I know you're a big Habs fan.

Habs 2 leading scorers - Suzuki & Caufield combined: 46 goals in 67 games (each) with an 15.725M cap hit
Zach Hyman: 46 goals in 64GP with a 5.5M cap hit.

Quite impressive he's producing more goals per game than the Habs 2 highest paid forwards combined while making 10M less.
You are preaching to the choir. I have been pumping Hymans tires all season .
While some leaf fans have been bashing him.
But great comparison against the Habs two top forwards.
It's been rough road for us Hab fans.

I was just pointing out that all it takes is a hot streak - you dont need to be a superstar to be able to match or surpass the record =)

amazing .....play off hockey 13 goals in 8 games last season.
Mathews had 5 in 11 games.

Oh yeah - no doubt Matthews has never been great in playoffs. He's been "okay" most years, and maybe even good a couple of times - but he hasn't been the same player who hit 50/50 in the regular season, or who was on pace for 80 goals a month ago...

In contrast - all of McDavid, Draisaitl, MacKinnon, Makar and Kucherov (who along with Matthews are my top 6 in league) have had both monstrous seasons and playoffs.

So - yeah, Matthews is very underwhelming in playoffs so far, but I'm just saying he's capable of scoring 19, so if he and Leafs ever figure it out for playoffs, I'd love to see him take a run at that record.

He has one stretch of 19 goals in 15 games this season, and another of 17 goals in 15 games I think. And if Leafs made 4 rounds, they'd probably be playing approx ~24 games or so.

The 19 goal single playoff run record has always seemed like a reachable one to me.

Sticking to Drai - I actually am hoping for Edmonton to go all the way this year. I can definitely see Drai and/or McDavid flirting with that record too.

Guess the Leafs shoulda sold him while his value was high with dat GPG pace to acquire some champions who show up in playoffs like Kuznetsov.

I agree. If its gonna get broken it would be one of those Oilers who do it.
They have the powerplay and offensive Dman to help. Where as the leafs don't have that big gun back there.
Leafs will have to go through both Florida and Boston in first two rounds. Don't like their chances of getting to third round.
If they ever did go 4 rounds Matthews might actually have a shot at the record of 19.
Average 5 a round.

I just realized how much he's slowed down. Felt like he was a lock for 70 not too long ago.
Yea he's in a slow patch now with only 3 goals in his last 10 games.

He's also had similar stretches earlier this season with 1 in 8 during a stretch in November, and 1 in 9 in December. He's balanced that by having a stretch of 10 in 5, 12 in 7, and a couple 6 in 2/3 stretches.

It doesn't seem that unreachable, agreed, but what makes it hard to reach is your opportunities. You first need to think about how good of a streak you need to be on to get 19 goals in 20 or so games...then, how many times do you get to try? I randomly thought of a recent guy that has won the cup a lot...no research went into finding someone....Messier has won the cup 6 times and only played 20 or more games in the playoffs 3 times in his career....23 being the most in any single year.

EDIT....I did a super high level check just on most games played in playoffs....Chelios, with 266 games, only played 20 or more in a single season 3 times, with most in one year being 23.

Sadly, probably not. He's gone cold with only 3 goals in the last 11 games and needs 15 in 15 games. He'll fall short by about 3-5 goals. Too bad because I don't think we'll see anyone else flirt with the 70-goal mark anytime soon.

who knows McDavid was only 6 shy last season.

Yea. Matthews has 22 in 50 games.
Getting 20 in approximately 25 play offs game.
not exactly going out on a limb here predicting it aint gonna happen for AM34

See, that’s part of my point, you say getting 20 goals in 25 games…how many guys have even played 25 playoff games in one season and how many times have they done that?

agreed , and even if Matthews did he doesn't score at that place in the play offs.
22 goals in 50 games career.
Crazy that when Leach set the record at 19 goals, he did it in 16 games.
