Auston Matthews 69 goals in 81 games, most goals scored since Lemieux in 1995-96

More related to the Leafs than Matthews but I watched an Overdrive segment on YT that aired yesterday before the Boston game and the guys had no care in the world as if the Leafs were a the world beaters and the Bruins were a scrub team. The false confidence starts to creep in in Toronto. I can already smell an emotional heartbreak months in advance. Succulent! :D

Ive changed my mind too actually. Not the best player in the league. Probably not even top 10. I watched him on a hot streak. Solid player though.

He is in a slump for sure and has been sitting in really terrible spots in the slot.

Leafs proved one thing tonight. They will not go past the 1st/2nd round with that horrific defense and average goaltending.

That's just how Matthews plays, he's either hot or cold. He had a stretch with just 1 goal in 9 games earlier this year and another with 1 goal in 7 games. Looks to have finished his hot streak.

You are a fan of a team that broke a record YEARS ago for the longest playoff drought, a record that is STILL going with no end in sight.

You have no room to take shots anybody

Hasek fan. If I had a slight affinity to the Sabres in the late 90s (and I did), it was only because of Hasek. Haven't cared for the franchise since. Nice OT win last night!

I hope Auston bought Ilya Samsonov a steak dinner after the game....only reason he even managed to score that winner was because Samsonov bailed the team out a bunch of times to keep them in it.

Harts too competitive this year. Needs to get hot again to remain in the convo
I'm a Leafs fan and a Matthews stan but he's not in the Hart convo at all. No matter how many goals, 9th in league scoring and 2nd on your own team aint it.

Also, recalibrating his goal pace after back-to-back hattricks led to unrealistic expectations. People honestly thought he was going to push 80 goals.

A couple of weeks ago Matthews was soaring, and all of McDavid/Mack/Kucherov had slowed down slightly.

At one point, Matthews was on pace for ~78 goals and close to 115 points, and all of the other 3 were pacing for closer to ~130 points than 140. If those were the final numbers - Matthews would have had an excellent shot at the hart.

But a couple of weeks later - Kucher/McDavid/Mack are all pacing for closer to 140 points again.
And Matthews has slowed down - he's "only" pacing for 72 goals/106 points.

There's still around 20 games left, so things can definitely still change, but as of today Matthews is a very distant 4th for Hart, I agree with you. He's no longer in the conversation for #1.

Even 4th... Idk, I think people are really under selling the impact both Q. Hughes and Pasta have had on their teams. Granted, Hughes has a ton of offensive support this year with EP, Miller, Boeser etc so hard to consider a Canuck for league MVP.

For the first half of the year I kept saying Hughes deserved the Hart more than anyone....but at the same time predicting that by season's end, he wouldn't be in the running anymore. He'd get lost in the shuffle.

I think that's what's going to happen with Hughes. As great of a season as he is having - I think all of McDavid/Mack/Kucherov are simply better. If the gap was smaller, Hughes would have a great shot at # 1 for Hart, because despite a lot of people doing well in Vancouver, it's still a complete surprise to see this team in the running for president's trophy, and Hughe's strong start to season is a big contributor to that. That's a great narrative for hart.

As for Matthews finshing 4th...I'm not saying he's necessarily going to finish 4th in voting. I'm saying he's the 4th most likely to win the hart as of today. Because he still has a path to bridge the gap with the leaders (~78 goals/115 points for example would look great). I don't think anyone else - not Hughes, nor Pastrnak have a shot at outright winning the Hart anymore.

I think Hughes is totally out of the picture. The reality is that since the inception of the Norris trophy, only 2 Dmen have won the Hart (Orr - 3 times and Pronger (once).

If you look at those wins:

- Orr - 1970 - 120pts, won the scoring title by 21pts.
- Orr - 1971 - 2nd in league scoring behind his teammate, but he was +124....way ahead of his teammate
- Orr - 1972 - 2nd in league scoring behind his teammate and same story, his +/- was way ahead.
- Pronger - 2000....similar story on +/-, he was way ahead of the rest of the league....except for Chelios....he was ahead, but Chelios was close....Pronger scored almost twice the points though. Then you look at that being a down year in scoring where scoring leader only only 96pts.

You can argue validity, and you could try arguing Hughes is putting up better numbers than Pronger....I'd disagree....Pronger was impressive that year beyond the points and +/- as well....but that's irrelevant what I think.....Hughes just doesn't have the same situation as these past 4 wins. He's not Bobby Orr, so we remove those. Then, with Pronger's year, you don't have lower scoring forwards either, we're looking at potentially 3 guys hitting 140pts.

I’m agreeing with you here and merely commenting further on Hughes and Pasta.

1. Hughes case has crumbled because the numbers are not quite there since the first quarter of the season.

He had 8 goals and 31 points in 20 games and led the league in scoring through November 23.

He has 4 goals and 42 points in 44 games since then and has slipped down to 14th in scoring.

Combine that with what everyone else has done since and as you correctly predicted, it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. The way things are looking now, I see him finishing around 7th in Hart voting.

2. Pasta, another contender in my eyes for 6th or 7th in Hart voting, is going to have simple perception work against him, among other things.

Though the Bruins have done an admirable job staying near the top of the East and Pasta is going to post a similar point total as last season as the Hart runner up, it’s possible he misses potting 50 goals, let alone the 61 he had. The Bruins have also been rather ho-hum since around the same time previously mentioned Hughes led the league in scoring. Since racing out to a stunning 13-1-3 record, they’ve gone 23-12-12 record. They’ve collected those extra loss points, but they’ve won less than half their games over the past 3 1/2 months.

Again, compared to what others are doing, his case is lacking.

Hughes and Pasta have had collectively tremendous campaigns, but I don’t think they’re much of a threat at this point to place in the top 5.
