Like it or not, Crosby and Ovechkin/Malkin created this new era of Hockey. They made others want to train harder / play better. Besides, even if his era sucked, there was still way more physicality / fights to play through compared to now. An invisible stat that shouldn’t be overlooked (goons trying to take your head off every night). Not much of that today. So I’d call it closer to even than you think.

It’s amazing how quick people are to forget once a few new shiny ponies show up. 4 out of 5 Cups between the three of them. How many has Matthews and McDavid won?

By the way, Crosby is still performing quite well in this era. Where’s your answer for that?

Bottom line there was way more toughness and bullying towards rookies in his era. And he absolutely shined.
Eating Hot Dog's and drinking Vodka!!! And playing from the red line to opponent net...!
Malkin shadowed by Crosby.

I am sure Zedno Chara started training hard because of Crosby.

87, 8 and 71 were exceptional players but sometimes exaggeration follows fans

Currently, 17 teams have a PP% of 21% or higher. In '08, 2 teams did. PP scoring % changes by era. This years leafs having 10% higher PP than '08 caps, I would attribute it 100% to era.

Though I'd be giving more credit to Nylander, and likely Marner as well for the PP than Matthews.

The time spent on the powerplay was a way bigger advantage than playing in a higher scoring era since any reasonable comparisons are viewed on a relative basis. Also playing run and gun 24/7, instead of a two-way game as a center. Yet here we are with Matthews on pace for 74 > 56 to Ovechkin’s 65 > 52.

Going to be tough to get 70, pace always slows down a bit in the last 20 games, last year Mcdavid was on pace for 69 after 62 games, had 52 in 62GP, so even his pace slowed down a bit. Im guessing he will finish around 65 goals, hell of a feat.

It's getting tougher he's gonna need a couple big games down the stretch. Needs 17 in 22. Only 2 goals in his last 5. But it seems he has scored in bunches a lot this year.

Has had a couple spurts where he goes in big runs. 6 goals in first 2 games. A 6 goals in 3 games stretch in November. 12 in 7 game stretch in December. 10 in 5 game stretch in February,

Seems every month he has a stretch like this so if he can do that again in March and April he should be able to hit 70+. Unless he's on the doorstep for 70 I'd imagine the Leafs will want him to sit for the final game or 2 before playoffs as well so he might only have 20-21 games to get it done unless he's really close.

The extra time spent on the powerplay was due to low powerplay conversation. If no one is scoring on the powerplay, you'll end up with more more PP time, and in Ovechkin's case, with the second unit, it's not much of an advantage. Not rocket science.

3.12 gpg vs 2.78. But yes, inefficient PP time is a bigger advantage than league wide scoring. Ok than.

Ovechkin still gets over 5 minutes on the powerplay. Is your argument seriously that Ovechkin’s powerplays never convert very well so he always gets so much time?

Ovechkin has nearly double the powerplay time Matthews has up to the same point in their careers and that trend has continued to this day. Can’t blame it on the lower conversion rates of the previous era.

Even including this recent cold stretch Matthews is over a goal per game in his last 40.

Still gonna be tough down the stretch. Game is gonna get tighter and I'd imagine the shadow of chasing 70 will be looking overhead as well.

Two teams with equal PPO. One team averages a goal after 30 seconds. Second team averages a goal after 1:30. Guess which teams players will have higher PP time.

It won’t be easy, but he’s still on pace for 74 after a cold stretch. Still more than likely he gets atleast 70.

Yeah this pace is lower than his season pace so he should hit 70 but it's been a slower stretch for him recently so he's gonna need to get scoring.

Matthews against playoff teams:
19 g/29 p in 27 gp (0.65 gpg) (1.07ppg)
Against non-playoff teams:
34 g/49 p in 31 gp (1.09 gpg) (1.58ppg)

Needs to pick up his pace against good teams if he wants to hit 70+.

Right? lmao what a scrub, only leading the league with 52 goals  those damn Leaf fans!
More like this:

[Matthews scores]
[Auston Matthews Fan Club shows up in force, crows about it]

[Matthews doesn't score]
*crickets*

If keeping everyone up to date about his goal scoring progress is so important that it needs to be put in a thread title and updated, then do that even when he doesn't score.

That's just me, though. EMMV.

Ive changed my mind too actually. Not the best player in the league. Probably not even top 10. I watched him on a hot streak. Solid player though.

He is in a slump for sure and has been sitting in really terrible spots in the slot.

Leafs proved one thing tonight. They will not go past the 1st/2nd round with that horrific defense and average goaltending.

Lol scores over a goal per game for 40 games and has a 5 game cold stretch and this is your conclusion?
