Matthews is great pure goal scorer but let's wait and see if he can play great match-up game in the playoffs like Eichel for example. So far he has lost the head to head match ups.

Uh, no he hasn’t. Just because his team has lost does not mean he’s lost his matchups. Both times he played Tampa he had more goals and points than anyone on their team and outplayed them defensively too.

Translation, I have a hard time acknowledging how great and dominant this guy has been so let me try and downplay and discredit everything he has done this season.

100% true.

Matthews in the past 5 years is 12th in PPG in the playoffs.

Like Trout, Josh Allen, etc, you still need help around you to win.

I will say he still needs to have a Mack, Kuch, or McDavid type of playoff run to kill the noise

I would argue that it would also be helpful if your team wouldn't randomly be put down by 2 men with phantom calls in an elimination game you're winning.

Or that it would be helpful if goals your team scores in elimination games weren't magically erased for minor infractions.

Or that, in that same vein, when a team scores to eliminate your team from the playoffs, that it doesn't happen directly off a player holding the stick of your defender rendering him useless.

Going on a heater and getting an HF poll against Matthews is a right of passage. If anything, it’s flattering that HF thinks Auston Matthews is the bar by which others should be measured.
If you've never had an HF poll against Matthews, you've never scored 2 goals in a game

Unless the stats I'm looking at are outdated, the only team with more hat tricks than Matthews (5) this season ... Is the Maple Leafs.
So however much he scores down the stretch he can't gain on that total, he can't win against the Leafs. That's heartbreaking and depressing. Will we see AM losing his drive and just give up on the season? Will there be remains to be seen? Remains to be seen.

Hmm. So 22 goals for a pure goal scorer in 50 games is "dominating" now?

This is almost as far-fetched as his "selke level" defence.
He's 40th all time in goals per game played in playoffs. He's faced Vasilevskiy, Vasilevskiy, Rask, Rask, Price, Bobrovsky, Holtby and Korpisalo (who ran a .941).

EDIT - Added Bob, who I forgot.

Forgot Bob from last year during his best playoff run ever too.

Theres 6 Vezinas there plus one of the craziest playoff goalie runs ever in Korpisalo.

It's crazy the Leafs couldnt have more success against those goalies running Andersen, Campbell and Samsonov eh?

I think a little more focus on that goaltending differential might help with the discussion around the Leafs tough playoff record lately.

Equally hard to believe is he had two slumps this season where he put up 2 goals in 16 GP. That means he has 46 goals in his other 36 games. 104 goal pace outside those two slumps.

This is almost as far-fetched as his "selke level" defence.

It’s almost like players don’t dominate every single series they play. He has 4 series with 4 or 5 goals and one of those as a rookie and he faced an elite goalie every time. His defensive play over the past few playoffs has also been elite (if holding Tampa to zero shots on goal when you’re on the ice in a game that went to overtime isn’t Selke level then I don’t know what is). Not sure why you would immediately disqualify yourself from being taken seriously by showing you don’t have a clue about his game.
