Why the f*** are people talking about defense in a thread about hat tricks lmfao ugh
Sometimes I don’t like how these threads turn out

Starts with talking about the hatty

Someone brings up Ovi

Someone responds to those comments with the same arguments and stats

Argument ensues

At the same time someone brings up Mcdavid or draisaitl

Someone responds

Argument ensues

So find the stats.

You asking someone else to do research to confirm your assumptions is just laziness.

Done. Standings as of today.

That's a 57 goal, 86 point pace versus playoff teams and a 90 goal, 133 point pace versus non playoff teams.

Still absolutely elite goal scoring against PO teams but the disparity is massive. Not unlike the disparity between his regular season and postseason production.

Cool.

Players score less goals against better teams. Is that a knock?

Matthews playoff scoring is easily explained. The best goalies in the league are usually his opponent. All vezina winners. You would assume elite goalies allow less goals.

Do people anticipate Bedard surpassing him as a goal scorer and overall player? I'm not so sure despite the generational tag.
Honestly, maybe. The kid has the tools and the brains. Not at all saying it’s a certainty but Bedard has a filthy shot. Huge amounts of progress have to be made though because what Matthews is doing is absurd. We might see 70 goals this year which is unreal in the post lockout era.

Also not that it means anything but if you removed the hat trick goals and the games he scored them in he’d still be at 30 goals in 42 games which is a 51g pace. Which is still hilariously impressive. Matthews is playing like one of the best goal scorers the league has ever seen.

Would be really curious to see his splits between playoff and non playoff teams. It seems everytime he plays a non playoff team he absolutely feasts on them.

He just had a hat trick against Philadelphia who are close to Toronto in the standings.

If you want to look at his splits and break down the numbers: Auston Matthews 2023-24 Splits | Hockey-Reference.com

The only thing that jumped out to me was that he absolutely is feasting on the Metro and the East in general. 16 goals in 12 games against the Metro, 29 goals in 27 games against the East.

Hate the Leafs (Dad was a Habs fan), but I am cheering for Matthews this year big time. He has a legitimate chance at 70 this year and that would be an incredible achievement.
Would be nuts if that happens.

It was awesome to see Matthews hit 60.

Then McDavid passes that. Now Matthews has a shot at passing that.

Just nuts.

He's a f***in' bad ass.

But you got McDavid and had Gretzky and shit.

Let us have this! (thank you is what I mean)

I've been saying for years though.............just wait..............just wait until the NHL is back in the Olympics and Matthews potentially explodes.............

Talk will be different.

The USA team for the Olympics should be loaded. He could cement his spot as one of the greatest of all time with a strong showing.

In raw goal terms, yes he needs to produce more from here on out than he has to date but again that is a misleading way to frame it. In reality he now has likely ~12 years of time to produce the same totals as he has already produced in just 7.5 years. Health or a future lockout will likely be the only reason he does not accomplish this feat. The majority of all time greats do play until around age 38. Its still a tall task but dont think its as unlikely as you are portraying it to be.

It's possible he plays that long but I personally don't see it and expecting it to happen just because a few others have done it goes against the odds. Plenty of all time greats don't play well into their late 30's as well. The vast majority of players slow down by age 35.

I think we should just enjoy the show he's putting on now and maybe in another 5 or 6 years we can start really looking at where he lands all-time.

I wouldn't hold this against Matthews. Since there is more parity with teams in the league than ever.

What he is doing is insane. When Ovechkin score 65 goals his gap to the second guy in the league was 25%. Matthews currently has 23% gap to Reinhart with 2 games in hand.

I think this is one of the most dominant seasons from goal scoring perspective in the cap era. Could very well be the most dominant when all is said and done, because I don't think Reinhart will keep up his 58 goal pace.

His playoff production is lower yet still has him 40th best all time.

It also helps to look at what he's run into yet has still managed to be top 40 all time (a list which has a lot of 80's players).

1st Overall - Holtby
4th Overall - Rask
3rd Overall - Rask
14th Overall - Korpisalo
18th overall - Price
8th Overall - Vasilevskiy
13th Overall - Vasilevskiy

Korpisalo was the only "lesser" goalie yet had a .941. Maybe Holtby.
