Auston Matthews 69 goals in 81 games, most goals scored since Lemieux in 1995-96

If this man hits 70, which would be the first time since Selanne. He deserves all the god damn hardware.

What we're seeing is incredible.

McDavids 150+ for the first time since 95-96 (Mario) we all just sat in awe.

If Matthews does 70+ for the first time since 92-93 (Selanne) we should all be in awe again.

This isn't a team thing, this is a hockey fan thing.

It's incredible the stuff these guys are doing right now and we should all feel honored to be able to watch them.

Draisaitl has more than Matthews this season. Last season, McDavid had more than Matthews. Checkmate!
Cool stats.

Giveaways per 60

22/23

Mcdavid 2.68
Drai. 3.38
Matthews 2.05

23/24

Mcdavid 2.96 2nd worst on the oilers
Drai. 3.16 worst on the oilers
Matthews 1.85

Stats are fun! Yay lol

So, you agree, we have three great players who probably won't win any Selkes, unlike Bonino?
I agree.

We also have 3 great players. 2 are average/terrible defensively and the other isn’t selke level but pretty damn good when talking about elite players in general

Unless the stats I'm looking at are outdated, the only team with more hat tricks than Matthews (5) this season ... Is the Maple Leafs.

Edit: He's actually got 6, my stats were outdated by a day.

Over the years, people tried arguing Laine, Eichel and most recently Tage Thompson were as good as Matthews.

He has absolutely dusted each and every one, it's not even close.
I don't recall either of those 3 having the likes of Tavares, Nylander, and Marner surrounding them but yeah, ok.

A talented player surrounded by more talented players apparently doesn't help, it's been a fascinating lesson by the insanely knowledgeable fans of the Leafs.

Going on a heater and getting an HF poll against Matthews is a right of passage. If anything, it’s flattering that HF thinks Auston Matthews is the bar by which others should be measured.

It just occurred to me that we have a rather quirky situation going on with the best goal scorers in the league: of the three most recent 60 goal scorers, ie. Matthews, McDavid and Pastrnak, none have an additional 50 goal season under their belt. Sure there's been shortened seasons and injuries and yes Matthews will certainly dispell this curse or whatever you wanna call it very soon, who knows maybe he'll score a third consecutive hattrick but I do think this is pretty extraodinary: we're not talking about sophomores here, they've had their chances. Would be mildly interesting to see the list of players with a 60 goal season in their career and how that feat compares to the rest of their career goal totals.

You'll find only twice in Draisaitl's career has he managed to not be a net negative (once at 0, another at +6). McDavid is a bit of a split. Matthews has 2 negatives.

This is ironic coming from a Pens fan (I'm assuming based on a quick glance at your avatar)

Guess Crosby was a lil overrated all these years as well given he got Malkin/Letang to ride shotgun. Probably wasn't as good as the accolades he got.

If Matthews gets another 60 it puts him here:

Bossy, Gretzky - 5
Lemieux, Esposito - 4
Hull - 3
Bure, Kurri, Yzerman - 2

Besides Esposito,he'd be the only guy with 2 or more outside the 1980-93 period.

Came to make a similar joke....the more multi goal games he has, the more games without goals he has. ;)
I can remember when it took almost 3 years to get his 2nd hatrick, the talk then was why can’t Mathews take over games with 3 goal nights.

I don't recall either of those 3 having the likes of Tavares, Nylander, and Marner surrounding them but yeah, ok.
And yet those players (Eichel, Tage, Laine etc) have barely shown, on a consistent basis on their own play, that they can be elite players. But ya, it is just the surrounding talent that makes a player elite.

They are outdated because they don’t include his hat trick last night, he has 6 hat tricks already.

Lmao say this louder for the people in the back.

People have tried to hard to make Mathews feel inferior the last few years.
Matthews is great pure goal scorer but let's wait and see if he can play great match-up game in the playoffs like Eichel for example. So far he has lost the head to head match ups.
