He is an unbelievable scorer. It does highlight that they do not need several $10m+ players alongside him though. He'd score 50+ with just average NHL wingers.

He’d score 60 plus just fine actually

holy shit, I knew he got more PP time than Matthews but I didnt think it was over 200 more mins

its still possible. depending how Matthews does over the next few years. if he has a couple more 60+ seasons he likely wont need so many 50s later in his career. we are entering when Ovechkin started to look human out there and scored 30+ goals for 3 years

That already happened when Ovechkin was 25 and 26, 32 and 38 goals in those seasons.

That’s not how adjusted stats work. I didn’t even say it was a great metric. But eras with lower scoring had slightly different rules that led to the same players scoring more when the scoring opened up, so it’s an undeniable factor that has to be discussed, versus taking away PP time to help account for the fact that OV drew more penalties in his prime than Matthews because he was harder to contain with the puck..

That’s exactly how adjusted stats work, I’d suggest you figure them out if you’re going to argue for them, it’s the least you could do.

Adjusted stats take a random baseline (usually during the Crosby and Ovechkin era) and then normalize whatever year they’re comparing based on league average goals.

So they start off by saying Ovechkin goals are worth 1.0 and then everyone else’s goals are worth some fraction of 1.0 depending on how many tenths of a goal scoring averages are.

So if 2.77 was league average for Ovechkin and someone else’s goal scoring year the league average was 3.0, you penalize the player playing in the ‘3.0 environment’

Meaning every goal is worth some fraction less than 1.0

Yeah he's 40th all time in playoff goals per game. Over half of those ahead of him were playing in the run and gun era. He's also placed where he has while regularly drawing against Vezina goalies.

Would we like to see an insane year? Absolutely. Has he been terrible? Hardly. Those pushing that narrative are basically trolling or have heads lodged within posteriors.
What hurts Matthews in playoffs is that he's at worst a top 6 player in the world over the past 3 to 5 years or so. In some order you have McDavid, Kucherov, Mack, Makar, Drai and Matthews as clear top 6

And all those 5 other players have each had absolutely historic playoff runs in the past 5 years, and often multiple such runs.

Matthews has been ~ok in playoffs in comparison.

He desperately needs a really huge playoff run in his resume soon

Sure, I was just pointing out flawed stats, not really even debating who is better.

You have to account for the fact that OV draws more penalties. 1.8 per 60 mins. OV was harder to contain in 08’ then Matthews, and he was awarded more penalties because of that. Some of those blatant penalties he drew would have been goals otherwise. You can’t just discount the fact that OV got more power play time without factoring into the reasons why. That is the issue.

So he got lots of PP time because he’s the Cap that drew all those powerplays? Huh?

I guess that’s why he got to play almost the whole 2 minutes many times.

Adjusted era is gone on this one.

Matthews just put up a better goal season than the guy that is gonna catch 99 soon.

Ovi never has, and never will have a better goal scoring season than a Toronto Maple Leaf.

It’s a tough pill to swallow for some.

It is possible, just really difficult to predict. These elite players like Ovi and Matthews just are so unique that you can’t compare them to other players in the league. Personally I still doubt Matthews can pass Ovi in career goals but it’ll be fun watching him regardless.

Agreed. It will be very difficult. I have said all along, it isn’t the first 8 years that set OV apart, it’s the next 8 years.

Domi is an established NHL center with has averaged close to a PPG when healthy. I think this proves my point, as he is miles ahead of what a rookie backstrom was when he was thrown into the lineup.

Actually him and rookie Backstrom are pretty comparable players to be honest.

Yes, he was one of the caps that drew the most PPs. They track this stat if you want to educate yourself. He drew PPs at 1.8 per 60 mins. Matthews is doing half of that this year.

Yeah, I think a site dominated by Americans is not having trouble accepting that Matthews is a good goal scorer.

I can think Mario and OV are more impressive goal scorers while also agreeing Matthews is amazing as well. Sorry your attempt to make me upset didn’t work, and that I’m a fan of hockey.

That would be great if Matthews played the whole season with him, but it’s been a fraction of the season and domi already had learned the system and practiced with Matthews.

Rookie Backstrom had to learn the NHL game, was undersized, and took awhile to adjust. Luckily OV could create space and scoring chances better than anybody we have seen since Mario.

my guy hes had bertuzzi and domi as his wingers for 15 games and he still has like 12 goals
It’s impressive don’t get me wrong, but it’s entirely different to do it for a long period of time where teams have a chance to game plan around your new line up.

Especially considering just about every team the leafs have played recently hasn’t had anything to fight for, as outside of Pittsburgh and Washington the other teams either have had their spot locked up for awhile or had no chance of making the playoffs.

I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. Simple math calculations will never work as the end all be all. Too many factors to account for.

However, in every sport we use context to compare numbers across eras. In the NFL we know passing stats today cannot be compared to the 1990s/2000s or earlier when defenses could maul receivers and QBs. Scoring in the NBA pre and post-three point line cannot be directly compared. Pitching in MLB during the steroid era etc. It doesn't demean players to be honest about the conditions around them when they played.

Yes I think Matthews this season and Stamkos' 60 goals are more impressive than the top scorers of 81-82 when the league average was over 4 GPG. Folks are free to disagree of course, it's just sports.

Who cares if he drew a lot of penalties. That’s not what I’m saying.

If you want to educate yourself all you have to do is read.

All I’m saying is that Ovi didn’t draw every caps penalty. But he definitely cashed in (in terms of pp ice time) on almost every single one of them.

Drawn by him or not, Ovi played shitloads of PP time and that helped him put up his best goal scoring season.

It’s easier to score on the powerplay.

PP time helped Ovi to score his 65 a lot more than Matthews who just passed Ovi.

66 and counting. Done with less pp time than Ovi.

There is zero era influence, powerplay minutes, ice time or anything else that makes Ovi’s best single goal scoring season better than Matthews’.

Best goal scoring season than Mr Mario
