Imagine if Dubas left, and we hired a younger person, like late-teens kind of age. And then Dubas took him to the races in a trade. We'd be begging to go back to an old dinosaur. I hope that doesn't happen.

Change "younger person, like late-teens kind of age." to "experienced, old school GM" and you'd have a much more realistic scenario.

Nah. Owmur ownership know where the money and good will lie. We'll go younger. We'll go more diverse. We'll go more, never see before in hockey. And that's a good thing.

Forthcoming contract extension or not, it'd be fair to question the GM role with the team if a lack of progress at the most meaningful time continues to be there.

Dubas is such a polarizing figure.

To some, he's the progressive innovator who "thinks outside the box" and who has consolidated the best core we've ever had, addressed areas of need, and stuck to a vision while shifting on the fly, all while shepherding us to some of our most competitive seasons in recent memory.

To others, he's a fake-glasses-and-cardigan-wearing charlatan who cares more about appearing to be the smartest and most socially conscious person in the room than on actually accomplishing anything of substance, as evidenced by his epic inability to get this team out of the first round.

Listening to the two opposing camps bicker back and forth gives me a headache. I just want to see the Leafs win.

Here. I feel that you've propped up one side.

And anyone that doesn't agree....

You've accused them of not liking glasses and cardigans.

That's interesting.

For the life of me, I cannot guess which side you fall on.

Guessing Adam Gretz is not buying what some on this board have been selling since we picked up our two goalies from the curb.

The winners and losers from the NHL offseason (so far)

Loser: Toronto's goaltending

What are the Maple Leafs doing here? This has been their big question mark in recent years, and to address it, they signed Ilya Samsonov and traded for Matt Murray and his contract. They are banking heavily on two disappointing players to bounce back in a big way. This team is under immense pressure to win (not even the Stanley Cup, but just a single round) and has a roster that should be capable of that. But they are shoring it up with a massive risk in goal. That is the one position you do not want to be bad at.

Impressed with yet another appeal to a dubious authority.

Although some feel he's past that test it's been pretty obvious to anyone paying attention and been mentioned too many times.

Who is Adam Gretz though?

What does he know? He mustn't like cardigans. Simple as.

Freelance writer who hates glasses, cardigans, matching hats, and small skilled players. Loves knuckle draggers though. :sarcasm:

Enter the turd polishing to bash his credentials… Same thing I’ve heard everywhere except here. Gambling.

THE Adam Gretzky???
The Athletic?

Dubas’ roll of the dice in goal, not once (Matt Murray) but twice (Ilya Samsonov), is all the more bold with what’s at stake personally, and for the team”

Roll of the dice, gambling, scrambling, take your pick.

it was gambling with basically any goalie that was signed or traded for this year, I can't think of 1 goalie who was not a gamble.

I am also glad to know goaltending is THIS important, cause there is no way Colorado is repeating, they make our goalies look like all-stars

I really hate our fanbase sometimes. Half of you have no idea how good we have it right now. All you have is "team hasn't won yet means he is bad" when in reality he has rebuilt our entire org in a short time, retooled our defense, signed our core.. oh yeah and also navigated the pandemic as Toronto was the most f***ed over team having that hit the same season they lock in their core.

We are literally JUST seeing the results of his changes. We had Liljegren come up and look like a top 4 D (his first draft pick as GM) with many more promising pieces coming up. He retooled our goaltending department, something we have all been wanting and has changed how our org evaluates talent which despite not having many firsts, we've managed to have a competitive prospect pool.

Half of y'all are incapable of evaluating the game. We lost so that means team sucks. Out of all the seasons I have watched, from reg season through game 7, this was a contending team that didn't lose to a better team, they lost to a coin flip. If this team plays the same way they did, these goalies are no worse than Campbell.

Would I have liked for him to go and get a Vezina goalie? Of course, but I have no doubt he evaluated what was available (not much) and decided instead of blowing cap on an unknown to roll the dice with cheaper projects.

As it stand now, Matthews WILL re-sign here so long as Dubas is here because he trusts him. One aspect of Tavares leaving was they fired the coach and GM he liked right before UFA opened and he didn't want to extend in an unknown.

Dubas is the best GM we have had in decades and he will bring us results. I am willing to let him run things for another 5 years before we pull the plug. As someone else said, he already let him make his mistakes, now we let him run things with experience and get the fruits of that labor. Or he can go onto another team as GM, win a cup with them, and have you same folks crying about this org being cursed.

In Dubas we trust. In this core we trust. Just because results haven't come, doesn't mean they won't get it done. This is still a special group. GLG

Somehow I still believe that if we're back at this point next season with another 1st round loss under the belt Dubas will still be here talking about a "process".

This is 2 years now it's been "run it back". I think we're just doomed with the guy. This fanbase has been successfully conditioned to losing.

I think he would make a change this year. He would rethink the core. Commit to signing Matthews and Marner to them as the forward core, and then look at defense and see what we have in Sandin and Liljegren, plan to allocate their money, and then go out and try to get the best dman we can with Nylander.

By then we should have an idea of what is coming for our goalies and what we have in Woll and Samsonov. I wouldn't be surprised to see us take a goalie with our first and begin basically a soft retool. Balance out the cap a bit better, let our prospects join the team on their ELC's, and continue competing with a new mix and likely a new coach.

I 100% trust Dubas and Pridham to be the one to plan the core of our team, allocate the space, and lock in our 3 best dmen and 2 best forwards for 8 years. They have learned a lot about the players and the value of cap space, as well as negotiating. I think Matthews and Marner are both rich af and both saw what their cap hits did to the team and their ability to win. I think both agree to extend near their existing numbers for 8 years, basically still being rich af but leaving a few million on the table, knowing with a rising cap their deals are very manageable.

Then we see Tavares deal end and use the money to lock in our goaltender coming off their ELC as well as re-sign prospects who established themselves. Hopefully Robertson shows something, and is able to score near 30 goals and replace Nylanders production a bit while on an ELC. This team should still be competing for cups while also retooling their core outside of Matthews / Marner (JT I think wouldn't be a core member anymore but they would let him finish his contract)

Roll of the dice, gambling, scrambling, take your pick.

Are you describing our approach to finding goalies or the play style of the goalies themselves last year :sarcasm:

They had the resources to grab literally any of the goalies that moved this summer. They made their choice.
if he was at the top of their list they would have dealt for him before the Ottawa trade with Buff which they had to give up a much larger sweetener got cancelled by Murray

you said they had the resources to acquire any goalie they wanted and choose Murray , i'm saying they only traded for Murray because the rest of the goalies they wanted were all signed
