Off topic, but we should do a fun side-project one time. An eye-test ATD. Sounds silly I know, but could be fun haha. Using only modern players of course because those are the only ones we have watched regularly. And ignoring stats and scoresheets all-together. Draft players based solely on how they LOOKED on the ice and by how much they pass the eye-test.

I remember Evgeni Artyukhin looking like a million bucks out there. Guy was massive, hit like a truck and could skate like the wind. He just looked like someone who should have been a dominant forward. Lars Eller was another guy who game after game looked like the best player on the ice as a Hab. It rarely showed on the scoresheet.

I saw him play, back in the days, when he was with the Moncton Wildcats. Back then, word on the street was that he was older than advertised. People were saying the same thing about Mikhail Grigorenko a few years later. I don’t know if it was true, but there were rumors about those Russian guys.

I'll pick Smokey Harris, LW to provide desperately needed toughness and defense to the Bowie-Maltsev line, while also having the speed to keep up with them. We went over his offense in detail in last ATD, and he looks pretty close to Baldy Northcott. He's also looks to be more of a playmaker from LW, which is nice for that line.

I remember hearing the same thing. Not sure if there was any truth to it or not. There were rumblings about Andrei Svechnikov as well.

Deserved bump IMO. He was one of the fastest skaters in the world at the time. I found 2 additional AS nods, including a unanimous one at RW and his defensive rep jumps off the page, being called the best defensive forward in the PCHA at multiple points during his career.

He's basically a faster version of Northcott.

Haha. Well the comparison came up last year. Their offensive value is almost identical. Both were highly regarded defensive players, tough/rough, etc. I think you have to give Northcott a bit more credit as his rep came in a consolidated NHL even though I think Harris has a more impressive resume.

I think for all intents and purposes their value is pretty similar. Can't go wrong with either one in the role their going to play!

Jacques Plante played fewer games in the regular season than many of his contemporaries. I will let him do that here too, and select an elite back-up in Henrik Lundqvist

That pick surprises me.

Well, I didn’t see that coming. It’s a good pick though.

Northcott's big advantage is that he has a history of defending a big strong guy (Conacher) one-on-one, including in the playoffs. I don't think Harris ever did anything like that. That's actually a pretty big value in the ATD - makes Northcott an option for either scoring line glue guy or checking line winger.

As far as glue guys for scoring lines, they seem pretty close.

Poor CTP is getting rough breaks for when his picks come up. He almost missed his clock when his pick came up about this time last night. Hopefully it won't mess him up this time.
