My first flirtation with the clock- I honestly didn't think it would get back around to me so quickly.

I think we could help Patrice Bergeron feel at home by placing alongside him a SuperPest teammate who has a will-to-win in the big moments, a Playoff Pedigree, and a proven ability to give at least as good as he gets from anyone.

Phantoms select 1994-1995 Conn Smythe winner Claude Lemieux

I just happened to be up in time to cry.

Going with a blazing fast wizard of special teams play who was a key part of both the power play and the penalty kill for the Capitals and has a knack for burying the puck in the net: Peter Bondra!

Mike Gartner - RW

9885e66b4cba2383ee394f32b9f41006.gif

- Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001.
- 7-time top-10 in All-Star RW Voting (4, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9)
- Ranked 89th on THN's Top 100 Players of All-Time in 1997.
- Played in 7 NHL All-Star Games (1981, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1993, 1996)
- scored 708 goals and 627 assists for 1335 points in 1432 games, adding 1155 penalty minutes.
- scored 43 goals and 50 assists for 93 points in 122 playoff games, adding 155 penalty minutes.

blazing speed/accurate shot. received Selke votes in two separate years, suggesting he may have at least some defensive value. 26th (87-88), 30th (79-80); wasn't soft. He had 27 fighting majors, and he went up against the toughest customers in his career.; coach poll votes for hard work, PK, best (slap)shot-accurate, consistent scorer.; definitely not afraid to play in traffic and drive to the net. He was exceptional at protecting the puck from the opposition even at such high speeds. Not a body cruncher, Gartner would finish his checks usually by rubbing players out along the wall

As a Caps fan I applaud the pick.

But I always thought his long-time center was MORE VALUABLE in winning face offs and passing pucks and backchecking.

I guess the same could be said of Bill Mosienko's pivot.

(MLD 2021 I can only hope for.)

I feel like it's like drafting Perry before Getzlaf. Like, really? Did you see them at all? One is not like the other.

I'm definitely not trashing your pick; I think the argument can be made for him at 2C at this point.

But based on expectations/talent level, I think what you listed is a disappointment. Like I said, not a bust, not even not worthy of being the number 1 pick in his draft year, but just not what I expected or was hoping for as a hockey fan.

His goal record is nice (especially leading in ES goals twice!), but his assist/total point totals are a let down. And, I know you didn't make the claim that he is a dominant defensive player or anything, but since you brought up his Selke votes- that is a pretty weak voting record. Outside of a respectable 8th place finish in 2017, he has received 1 third place vote in 2012, 1 second place vote in 2013, 1 fifth place vote in 2015, 1 fifth place vote in 2018, and 2 fourth place votes in 2019. To me, that sounds like a local writer/fan of the player throwing a vote his way year after year.

Again, though- definitely not a bad pick here. My disappointment is in regards to how is career shook out, not where he went in the ATD. While I (and I think most of the hockey world) was expecting a top 3-5 center... just eyeballing it, he is, what... in the 5-10 range?

Yeah like I said compared to the hype coming in he's been a bit disappointing even while being a steady high-end producer. Which is a weird thing to say about a guy who was a finalist for the Hart more than once but I guess the hype was pretty high. Hopefully he can shine up his resume with some good playoffs with the Leafs the next few seasons while they have the collection of talent they have now.

Lived in LA 10 yrs saw lots of them and agree. The two of them fit like a glove tho, Perry has a big bag of tricks at the net and on the boards and xxx is just a magician. Impossible to get the puck off those two. And Perry could take a whole team off its game just with his attitude.

Updated Paul Thompson bio for those who are interested. @overpass is correct, there is very little description of scorers defensive work in the newspapers, but I did find some articles which support Thompson's all around play at least in relation to other players.

(he should be in the Hall of Fame btw)

Look at the right wings on my roster. I needed to pick up an RW who could kill penalties, and there wasn't going to be a better option than Bondra, and I had zero confidence of his getting to my next pick. His power play exploits were nice too, as they mean that I can give the guys ahead of him more even strength minutes (though I can't see not using Richard on the PP, obviously).

I had a gaping hole on the right side, and I wasn't about to miss the perfect fit for it. As for center, there's a lot more depth there, so there are a lot more options. I'm far from having this all figured out, but I'm definitely standing behind my thought process on this one.

@Professor What i think you can use Bondra at the point on the PP, if you want to use both Bondra and Richard.

And I might do something like that. I really only added the comment about Richard to my last post because I knew if I didn't, people would think I was off my rocker after the extra ES minutes comment.

I'm really not sure what form my power play is going to take yet. I've got personnel that can handle it now, but the guys I get going forward might make a difference too.

I'll pick one of the best defensive wingers of all-time

Marty Pavelich, LW

From @Sprague Cleghorn 's excellent bio
ATD 2018 Bio Thread

*One of only five players to be on all four of Detroit’s Cup winning teams of the 1950’s (Howe, Lindsay, Kelly, and Pronovost).

*Five Consecutive Retro Selkes awarded by Ulitmate Hockey: 1952-53 to 1956-57

*Held Rocket Richard Pointless for an Entire Playoff Series!

*Went an entire Cup Winning playoff year without being on the ice for a single ES goal against!

Detroit Free Press, Feb 2 1955, page 23:
Pavelich has been a key player for the Red Wings. He is one of the four men (Lindsay, Howe and Kelly are the others)... (Detroit GM) calls the quartet “my winning nucleus - I built around them and started the winning cycle”. He never fails to mention Pavelich as an important part.

“Pavelich is the best defensive forward in the league and the best penalty killer - it’s a shame there isn’t an award for those talents” (Detroit GM) points out with vigor.

Pavelich is the type of athlete often referred to as a “team player”. He is a holier guy, a potent force in the locker room, never gripes and is a spark plug on the ice with his perpetual motion skating.

@Hawkey Town 18 , you had Pavelich before. I'm pretty sure that he's the one who took faceoffs when he and Tony Leswick killed penalties together. Do you remember if that's correct?

When I drafted Pavelich I also drafted Leswick and played them as a PK duo. I don't remember ever being able to uncover which of the two took draws, but it didn't really matter since I had them both.

This is a point in the draft when we start seeing really solid role players (and defensive forwards) go off the board quite frequently.

In my case, having Northcott and Keon on my 2nd line - and Messier/Firsov on my top line who are also defensively responsible - I feel like this year I have a bit more freedom to build my bottom 6. This is the first year I feel I don’t necessarily need a traditional checking line, although there are obviously always certain intangibles you look for.

But yeah, typically I would be looking for a guy like Marty Pavelich for my 3rd line. This year I feel it’s not as necessary for my lineup as usual.
