Most flattering photos ever!

It's entirely possible that my memory of the inner workings of 1970's-era Montreal unit composition is not entirely accurate. It's also possible that I remember more where Gainey lined up in the playoffs, and less his role during the regular season.

Nevin's best years in New York were on a line with Goyette and Balon (the "old smoothies"...corniest line name ever). They were the top line in New York (pitiful, I know) for a while after they came over. Goyette was clearly the offensive catalyst of the unit, though Nevin was no slouch, himself.

Would have to drill down a little more into Benn's regular linemates. I follow the Pacific division pretty well as a Sharks fan...well enough to know that Jamie has skated both with that kid from Boston and that old man from Ottawa...but I don't know exactly how much time he has spent with one or the other at even strength. I know this year he is mostly skating with the old man when I have seen the Stars play.

Really?

Huh.. Nevin actually led the Rangers in scoring one year. In fact, he was a pretty prominent scorer for them for much of his time there it seems. Looks like the GAG line took over in 1969. Seems like Nevin is a legitimate two-way player as opposed to a purely defensive one.

As far as Benn, when the Boston Bruins' resident after-game party maniac came over, I would be fairly surprised to find out that he and Benn were anything but stapled together during ES shifts. They definitely had a rotating cast of Three Stooges candidates for much of their time together, however.

I have no idea about before then. It's possible that Benn played with the second most self-important player in free agency of all time* for most of his shifts.

*Nobody is taking this title away from Lebron James. Forget it!

He is...he is. You and seventies will have to hash out who was the leading ES scorer on those old Goyette - Nevin Rangers lines. I know that, anecdotally, Goyette felt like the offensive leader of the unit, but those are old, vague impressions from my youth.

Meh. Is that really all that important? From 1965-1969, Nevin scored 250 points, Goyette scored 259.

...

Gonna be honest, I was expecting Goyette to blow him out by at least 30-40 points. I am amazed at how close it was. Worth noting is that these were Nevin's age 26-30 years, and Goyette's 31-35 years.

Chances are they share equal honors in the Rangers' overall futility of the mid-late 60's. They did get better in 1968 and 1969, likely due to the emergence of the GAG line.

For ES scoring, my numbers show 180 points for Nevin, 185 for Goyette.

Season|Goyette ESP|Nevin ESP
1965|23|18
1966|32|42
1967|47|35
1968|51|48
1969|34|36
Total|187 (322 GP)|179 (345 GP)

Goyette was about a 12% better ES scorer during the 5 seasons he and Nevin were both on the Rangers.

Orillia Terriers select Lynn Patrick

The other guy I considered. I was scared off by his being soft, and his really bad playoff record.

Tremendous regular season scorer for this point in the draft though.

he's been the best offensive LW available for a ridiculously long time by VsX. No other player would not wait this many picks after becoming the best offensive position player on the board. Not Phil Housley, not Pierre Turgeon. What are the warts?

He is incredibly soft. He's known to actively avoid physical contact.

He's a poor playoff performer. vecens suggested his unwillingness to play physically is a big part of the reason for it.

And this is an assumption on my part, but I believe he likely wasn't a good defensive player either.

He seems an offense only player, with a mediocre play-off record. Nothing too horrible, I don't think!

I think the "Sonja" nickname was given to him because he was soft, but I also remember reading that the fans hated him because they originally viewed his place on the team as nepotism, which faded early in his career.

This is wonderful work, but I can't for the life of me figure out what the three-letter-acronyms in the second column mean. I've been just sort of assigning them values in my head...like for the Sedins TML clearly stands for "Too Much (insert goalie name)", for Kovalchuk SSB might be "Such Sexy Backchecking", for Lemaire BRO must mean "Bro!", and so on.

It would be nice to know what these funny letters actually signify, though.

hmm, sounds like Phil Housley and Pierre Turgeon (Turgeon produced in the playoffs, mind you). Why does phil Housley get drafted the second he becomes the best offensive d-,man on the board, Turgeon waits about 80 and Lynn Patrik waits an incredible 230? (at a scarce position, to boot)

Their current ATD teams. ORI = Orillia Terriers.

Their the teams that drafted them MTM - montreal maroons :laugh:

It's just to remind me of how they play. You're right about the Sedins and Kovalchuk.

For Getzlaf, it is "Always Brings Brawn". For Ciccarelli, it's "Truly Bad Character", for Hodge it's "Mostly Hook Checks", for Muller it's "Strictly Twenties Kirk", for Pat Verbeek it's "Always Messing Around", for Marleau it's "San Jose's Soldier Boy". And so on.

Probably because people don't think to leave their LW spot open for a pure scorer. The LW typically ends up becoming the "glue guy spot".

Like I said earlier, if my second line was Ullman - Hextall Sr, for example, I'd be much more inclined to draft a Patrick or Alexandrov to fill it out.

The fact that he was downy-soft and fairly sorry in the playoffs makes him a tough sell.

Turgeon has his uses if you can put him in the right situation. Why Housley holds his draft position while Patrick remains in ATD Siberia is a question for the ages.

Lemieux = Totally Offensive Loser
Peca = Individually Notable Defensively
Gainey = Montreal's Honest Checker
Kerr = Would Lose (to a) Turtle
Ellis= Very Atheist.... Not
Nolan = Really Energetic Grinder
Luce = Has Famous 'Do
MacGregor = Totally Boring Checker

Housley is highly attractive as a #1 PP option that goes well, well behind the other #1 PP options without actually being significantly worse than those guys.

The obvious downside being that he shouldn't play at ES in the ECHL.

Draper = Bone Reconstruction Boy
Larionov = Mainly Soviet Educated
Doan = Won't Leave, Trooper
Hunter = Really Energizes Guys
Tikkanen = Bothersome, Often Rousing
Goyette = Read: Evenstrength Defense

Sullivan = Maimed Spleen, Essentially
Pulford = Worked Like Terrier
Naslund = Habitants' Famous Diver
Roenick = Pretty Interesting Temperament
