At this rate, we're going to miss the playoffs...

The big road trip at the end of March could be critical. The Kings have blown a lot of points this season, but when I look at the standings, I see them in 3rd in the Pacific Division. It's not going to be comfortable for them to get in unless they have a big home stand like they did earlier in the season where they won six in a row.
Yes. Beginning with the Jan. 31 game against Boston the Kings finish the season with 21 road games and 13 home games! Quite skewed at that point! Also, they might have games in hand on teams! It can be an illusion sometimes looking at the daily standings. That's why it'd be nice to not be on the bubble. If you really want to make the playoffs, you need to be thinking we need to be way above the bubble! Lower and anything can happen! I think the Kings will make the playoffs!! However about 7 or 8 weeks ago when I mentioned it isn't easy just making the playoffs in the parity marred NHL, I got the feeling people thought I was nuts!!!

Let's not act like Voynov was playing stellar hockey before he was arrested.

I think it has more to do with the continuity in the line up and the distraction that it has caused. Jamie McBain and Jeff Shcultz were on a pairing the other night. Who had that penciled in at the beginning of the season? I think that situation has also hampered the possibility of the Kings making a trade to replace him until his future is a little more certain.

But this thread is way premature. Sure, the Kings haven't looked great most of the year and as painfully boring as the last two games have been, the Kings actually look more like themselves the past few weeks than the did win they were winning games at the beginning of the season giving up 35+ shots a night. They just need to put it all together.

I just posted this info in HansH's points thread, but I thought it would be appropriate here as well:

Our away record is bad in the big picture, but most of the games are close, so there's hope.
Our overall away record is 4-8-6
Every away game that has gone into OT or SO, we've lost.
Of the 8 regulation losses on the road, half of those were by one goal.

Let's say we instead won just half of those OT/SO games, and got 1 point in half of those regulation 1-goal losses. That's just 5 extra points, but that would have us in 2nd in the Pacific, and 4th in the Conference.

I don't think it's panic time yet. A few of these close away games could swing our way in the new year.

Criticism of their play has been well earned, but they've also done too much to not give them an overall benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. We're not yet quite in the new year, the season isn't even half over yet, the all-star break still hasn't come and gone. There is plenty of hockey to play.

After last year I'm convinced this team can do almost anything. I don't think this thread is premature, its just an observation that if we keep playing like this, there's a good chance the playoffs will be missed (especially on the road). There's still time to turn things around but they're playing with fire. I really wish DL would've tried harder to keep Willie Mitchell, who was the glue for our D. Unfortunately Voynov ****ed himself and the team over, and now we have a bunch of castaways back there. One or two key injuries to our top guys and we're really screwed.

Team needs to make an adjustment. This Voynov thing has really jacked up the team and the team has not responded well to the adversity. They are playing a very lazy game of hockey. If we need a trade, so be it. Also, am tired of seeing vids on the cup from the team. That was last season and that season is over.

I think the Voynov situation has hurt this team more than anyone realizes. However, assuming 95 points gets you safely into the 8th and final spot, the Kings need to accumulate 51 more points over the remaining 44 games. If the total points available in the remaining games are 88, then that's a required 58% winning percentage. Not too bad at this stage, but that percentage will quickly go up with any kind of sustained losing streak.

Losing Mitchell was huge, he's been a great captain and leader for the Cats and I've watched quite a few of their games, he's solid against top lines, steadying the pulse of the game , great breakout passes. he's been a HUGE reason that team is playing so well. And Eckblad couldn't have a better role model or mentor. Luongo's playing well and adding another vet. presense in the room. They have good stock of young talent and more growing in their farm system . They'll only get better.

DL has been trying to get a D man since last winter and in the last 3 mos that accelerated. I think that move will come before the end of Jan. and depending on how much of a SC push he wants this year, if he has Yandle in his sights, it's gonna cost them a young player , a young prospect and a top pick. It just depends what GM overprices their D the most and what DL will to sacrifice. Sekera, Petry, Coburn, Yandle, were the names over the last month or so that have been linked to the Kings. And the price tag of Sekera is as high as Yandle's because it's a seller's market. Petry would come cheaper but isn't the same level. I like Coburn and since the Flyers are in a fix CAP wise (2.9 under the CAP with 10 expiring contracts) they might only want a prospect and a pick.

The Kings are blowing too many points and lucky that DD hasn't been injured. Points in the bank saved them last year when they went on that 6 week nose dive. This year, no safety net and the other reason they need to upgrade the top 4 D is that the competition/path thru the WC will ne a lot harder.
The Preds are for real and a legit contender, given their goaltending and D is so strong. I watched last might's game and they put up close to 50 SOG on the Blues and came at them in droves. If they stay healthy, they'll be in the WCF.
This 7 game homestand is critical and there are some tough games in there.

The bigger beef I have is that the teams ahead of us are actually better teams as of now imo. Some of our guys have regressed, maybe permanently. Our d-corps and team d are currently a shambles. Do I think we can beat anyone in a series? Yes. But we'd be the underdog for sure against at least the Ducks, Blues, Hawks, Preds...basically anyone ahead of us except Calgary/San Jose. These teams all made changes to compete with us and it's worked. They all look deadly most nights and have depth at all positions.

The good news? We have a GM who knows what to do. I'd rather be exhibiting these weaknesses now than limping into the playoffs. I trust DL will take this new year by the horns, get us a strong 2nd pairing d-man, work with the forward corps, and we'll be screaming into the playoffs. I think sometimes we forget that the lineup we STARTED 2014 with looked something like this:

from a gdt vs the lightning on oct 13 2013:

Brown-Kopitar-Williams
King-Richards-Carter
Clifford-Lewis-Frattin
Carcillo-Stoll-Nolan

Regehr-Doughty
Mitchell-Voynov
Martinez-Greene

Muzzin Ellerby scratched

We all know what happened after that.

It's even more drastic if you go back and realize we were icing guys like Trent Hunter, etc.

In DL I trust--but I'm scared just like anyone else to see which players are truly toast because we will only go as far as our vets and reshaped defense take us.

Man I miss having that defensive lineup.

Man I miss having that defensive lineup.

Totally, but looking at that forward lineup, is it any wonder we couldn't score? That got fixed and then some, so I trust DL to do the same to the defense. HE fixed it before, he can do it again. McNabb was a very good first step.

I don't get the stat heavy guys saying "Oh it's just random. Road and home records are completely random."

I know they are pretty even for the most part, but if they were truly random the Kings are getting on the bad side of some "Random" results on the road. A lot.

I would agree if the production from top players was there.

The last three season's it has been. This season it's not. Kopitar's production so far is rather alarming.

Almost 40 games in and not one Kings player has broke 30 points.

No its not.
There is NO WAY we dont make the PO. I mean havent you learned anything, they just dont care about the reg season.
If they really needed to they could go on 10 0 0 streak.
The Oilers game was a prime examlple. They do not care; so stop overeacting.

There's a point in the regular season where teams either dig themselves into a hole, build up a comfortable lead, or tank. Right now the Kings are digging their own grave. They can't just go on a 10 game streak, their record and play hasn't indicated they can "just" do that.

Kopitar's production is absolutely down this year, even with Gaborik on his wing (at times). There's no denying that.

Preds are scary. They're tearing though everyone at will right now. Losing Mitchell still bums me out but there's no getting him back anymore.

I don't think Coburn would help us too much. He shoots left and would still probably cost too much. Voynov has ****ed this team over big time.

Man, these are the stanley cup champs that lost to the Oilers; they are playing well below their capabilities and I for one think is intentional; they like to be seen as underdogs in PO and also avoid injuries. Kopis PPG season end will be the same as always.
