I would expect Tampa would be more likely to match a 6-7 year offer sheet for four 1st round picks then they would say a 4-5 year offer sheet at $8-$9m/year.

I don't think we match anything that gets us four 1sts.

Related question: Every article I've found says the 2017 NJ 3rd rounder to Carolina is a conditional pick.

Does anyone know what the condition is?

No, but last season, Mike Smith, the web director and Reporter for the Canes (employee of of the Canes) was asked via twitter and said the Canes definitely have that pick.

Also, in a radio interview I was listening to a couple weeks ago, Francis made that comment that the Canes have 5 picks in the 1st 3 rounds next year..so that would be the 3 Canes pick, NYR 2nd, and NJ 3rd. Based on this, I'm fairly certain the Canes have that pick.

As I said earlier though, I don't think it matters. My guess is that the offer would have to be one that would require four 1sts in order for Kucherov to want to sign it.

Only teams that have more than 7 mil in cap space right now and are eligible to offer sheet a 7 to 7,5 mil contract (meaning they have the picks needed) are Anaheim, Buffalo, Calgary, Carolina, Florida and Winnipeg

now Calgary, Anaheim and Buffalo will likely use that space on their own RFA's instead, so that leaves Panthers, Carolina and Winnipeg.

This is of course assuming that 7 mil would be enough.

If Devils offered 4 years at the max dollar amount for 1st, 2nd, 3rd compensation would Tampa Bay match on principal basically?

If not Kucherov doesn't really have any leverage and will probably be back on a good sized bridge.

All NYI would need to do is LTIR Grabovski and move a contract.

7 years by $6.706M would be four 1st round picks. I'm confident predicting TB would quickly match that.

I think it depends on the team offering the sheet. I love Kucherov, but four 1sts would go a long way to solving our cap issues. If it's a top-5 team in the league, I guess we match. But if it's a mid-level team or worse? I think we let Kucherov go and go with eight first rounders in the next four years.

I wouldn't trade four 1st round picks for anyone in the league.

MAYBE McDavid. thats it.

People overrate 1st round picks. You have to consider the talent in the draft they're in. Not all 1st round picks are created equal.

McDavid is absolutely a player you give up for 1st round picks for. People here presume that 1st round picks are gold and that each one has a good chance at being just as good if not better than 1 player. Truth is, that's far from the case.

Look at NJ's situation, they're a team that probably shouldn't offer 4 1st's given some of their talent they need to restock. However, they need to be winning and landing Kucherov would go a long way towards making that happen. If I were the Devils, It'd hurt, but I'd probably go forth with the offer sheet for Kuch. Say they don't land him, they get to keep their picks, but it also sends a message to the fans that they're willing to do what's necessary to win and make the team better.

Winning sells tickets, and in reality the name of the game is making money. Magic beans don't make money right now. Winning does.

You can argue that it'd be better to draft talent and to grow it, but given how long it takes for some of that talent to make the show, you have to weigh what's better, money now or the possibility of money a few years down the road.

Would Tampa consider a trade for Kucherov's rights?

Cam Atkinson + Dalton Prout (cap reasons) + '17 1st Rd Pick OR Sonny Milano for Kucherov

Tampa gets back a solid 50 point winger who could break 30 goals this season, a 6/7 defenseman and a high end prospect for Kucherov. The Jackets place Clarkson on LTIR to fit under the cap.

Jackets group:
Jenner-Dubinsky-Kucherov
Saad-Wennberg-Bjorkstrand
Hartnell-Gagner-Foligno
Calvert-Karlsson-Anderson

Murray-Jones
Werenski-Savard
Johnson-Nutivaara

Protected from expansion draft: Dubinsky, Hartnell, Foligno, Kucherov, Wennberg, Saad, Jenner / Murray, Jones, Savard / Bobrovsky

Tampa:
Killorn-Stamkos-Drouin
Palat-Johnson-Atkinson
Namestnikov-Filpulla-Paquette
Brown-Boyle-Condra

Hedman-Stralman
Garrison-Sustr
Coburn-Prout

Columbus doesn't have the cap space, To offer sheet Kucherov $6.5 million or so. So i doubt it's the Blue Jackets.

Technically we do if Clarkson really does end up on LTIR. That said, it certainly would be a bit absurd, especially given all the young guys we'll have to resign over the next few years.

The Devils do seem the most likely to me, presuming they somehow reacquire that 3rd from the Canes (or if it turns out that they retain it in the end - it's conditional, but with an unknown condition).

Kucherov is 23 years old, and I believe he becomes an UFA at age 27. I don't see him signing a four year deal. There isn't enough job security for him, in case he suffers a concussion. Every young player wants longer deals for that reason.

I think they've learned from the Russian experiment. There's a reason they traded 9th overall a few years back to get Schneider instead of drafting Nichushkin.

That's completely false. Kovy was a Devil when that deal was made... We made that deal because it's a ****ing steal and Schneider>Nichuskin anyway

New Jersey might have to trade with Carolina to get that 3rd round back. Or they offer enough to give up 4 1st rnd.

A team must have all their own draft picks that would be involved in order to make a offer sheet.

If you don't have your own pick that would be required for an offer sheet you can still offer sheet as long as you have that pick the following year. There was a link to a ruling about offer sheet compensation sliding to the following year in an attempt to make offer sheets more usable in one of the threads about Lindholm/Risto/Jones over the summer. So if Jersey really did want to make an offer they could with their current picks iirc.

Any offer sheet that Kucherov would actually sign would be long term and bring back 4 1sts. I’m a big Kuch fan but I would want Yzerman to take the picks. It would solve the cap problem and allow us to retain Palat, Drouin, and Johnson next summer. With our current prospect pool, and having a guy like Al Murray getting 8 1st round picks over the next four years, we would be a contender for the next 10 years, especially if they came from a lottery team. You could even convert a couple of those picks into a very good player. I just can’t imagine any team doing it.

I've never heard this before and don't think its true tbh.

Would tampa trade his rights instead of taking the picks?

His teammate, Curt Flood. The man whose name was on the lawsuit that sought to end the "reserve clause" and ushered in free agency in professional sports. Whatever your take on that issue, the guy was a pretty interesting individual.

If New Jersey had their own 3rd-round-pick, I think they would have done it by now.

I don't think it's safe to assume that Kucherov would sign an offer that would only required 2 1sts, 1 2nd and 1 3rd. And if he did, TB would likely match it. More likely, anything he would sign would require 4 firsts.
