Prospect Info: At 16th Overall the Rangers Select Brennan Othmann

Ding Ding Ding...

beacuse Sather likes Ciaccio. That's the only reason he is here still. Job performance doesn't mean anything .
I have no idea if he is good or bad. Unless I watched him in practices how could I know? I know he has been here for 3 coaches and they must have been okay with him. Know Gretz was high on him. Can I say he is good? Nope not unless I see him with my own eyes.

How is Ciaccio still with the team?!
I don't know if you have had a chance to talk with Bobrov or anyone about it back in the day.

The media not addressing it is baffling.

It's the results. Has anyone here really improved skill wise during his tenure. Kreider does so much work outside of the facility with Prentiss and is a gym rat.

I honestly do not know. Im not close enough to judge. I don't think pros improve their skills much during the season.

I have watched him a couple times now during the Memorial Cup... his skating was the first thing i noticed and he will definately have to improve that if he wants to play in the NHL. His Peterborough team was awful in the one game and i honestly didnt see him accomplish anything... I was hoping to see a bit of grit from him since their team was getting beat bad by Kamloops but himself(and rest of team) didnt do anything really.

Obviously hes a very good player and has accomplished alot in his junior career as a player and with Team Canada WJC but in the 2 games ive watched him live i found him very dissapointing. Its a huge tournament and i just feel he hasnt stepped up yet

one thing about him is he's basically been playing for almost 2 years straight....essentially since we drafted him. skating / leg strength / explosiveness are things you work on heavily in summers for the most part. he didn't have a summer last year because of the late playoff run, then delayed world juniors, then prospect camp, main camp, junior season, playoff run, now mem cup. i haven't been blown away by his skating either, and he's never gonna look like carl hagelin, but i think that's something to consider when observing him now. at this point the tank has to be running pretty low for one, but the lack of time dedicated purely to training makes a difference.

How many other top prospects is this also true about? This reeks of the “Laf sucks because of COVID” tired ass excuse.

how many top prospects is this true about? very, very few. no ones ever had a world juniors in the summer and i don't follow major junior close enough to know or care enough to look back at back to back long playoff runs post draft, but i can tell you this is a rare run of continual hockey. i mean if you don't get the impact the covid interruptions had on players at pretty important years in hockey development, i don't think you'll understand how much hockey this is or how much of a difference spending a summer training can make for a young player.

I’m not sure how anyone thinks COVID DIDN’T affect Laf’s development. And many other prospects’ development. And I’m not sure why people can’t understand that different players are affected differently by similar circumstances.
I think he made a pretty good argument about Othmann not having much off season opportunity to work on his skating mechanics. You implying that it was a widespread thing doesn’t change that. Especially since the “consensus” among the naysayers is that Othmann needs WAY more work on his skating mechanics than pretty much every other prospect. Hahaha.

Othmann plays a hard game. If he fails to become a top 6 winger in the NHL it will be for reasons much different than Kravtsov. I think he has a shot at the Rangers in training camp but it also might be best if he starts in Hartford. He is going to have to work his way up in the lineup. Still he has some edge and he's not afraid to get his nose dirty. Kind of a throwback typical Canadian juniors players from the 90's early 2000's.

People complained about Tkachuk's skating

Despite his vast array of skills and elite hockey sense, Tkachuk’s two biggest areas of weakness are among the concerns that are holding him back from potentially competing for a top three selection in this draft. His skating, while solid and showing good agility and balance, is still a tick slower than most other top prospects and could keep him from becoming an elite scoring threat in the NHL.

That lack of an extra gear has really prevented Tkachuk from being a top player in the NHL.
