Prospect Info: At 16th Overall the Rangers Select Brennan Othmann

He was the guy in Flint last year already. Had nobody to play with...didn't even play with Flint's best forwards like Lombardi much...and still dominated the league. Would have led his team into the final if it wasn't for Windsor's starter getting hurt and their backup standing on his head like crazy. Windsor was down and out and it was mostly Othmann's work. Flint had probably the leagues best goalie but other than that the team was all Othmann. Cavallin is no longer with Flint though so they might not even make the playoffs. There's nothing Othmann can still learn in the OHL and whether he wants it or not, he'll get bored quickly, especially if he's playing on a losing team. He was the OHL's, maybe the entire CHL's most dominant player last season and unlike the other superstars he did it all on his own. Take McTavish for example. I like McTavish a lot but he had a shitload of support in Hamilton and even back in Peterborough. Othmann had zero elite talent around him. Nobody. So what more can he do? I don't see it. Is he NHL ready? Probably not. But sending him back to the OHL does nothing for Othmann...and that's the best case scenario. Bad habits would be a major risk.
Bad habits, other than injury, would definitely be something to worry about.

It's a tricky spot. But, IMO there's a clear answer to this situation if they give him the 9 game look in the NHL...

Take the scrub 4th liner they have mysteriously planted on the 1st line, drop his ass to the 4th line or press box where he belongs, put your #1 overall pick on the top line where he belongs, and plug Othmann on the Kid Line.

sounds like his junior team def has memorial cup potential if hes there. dont think itd be the worst thing to go spend one more year in jrs, light it up, and hopefully captain his team to collecting a league championship with a shot at the memorial cup. a winning pedigree is never a bad thing

you'd prob know more than me then saw wheelers preview predicting them ohl champs...know they had a run last year and while it that preview is certainly far from any guarantee, would assume they'd have to have enough to have a shot at getting there. if there's a shot, it can be a goal. i cant say i follow or watch the ohl myself though, just something i came across and read. guess you dont agree, if they suck, idno hope he gets traded to a team that does. wouldnt want him playing for a doormat just playing for numbers

Blake Wheeler said that?

Last years run was due to friggen Luke Cavallin playing out of his mind. He was by far the OHL's best goalie. While Will Cranley is a talented goalie with lots of upside, it would be downright crazy to assume he's gonna provide Cavallin level goaltending. He'd have to do that for Flint to even have the slightest chance to get there. I mean Othmann had almost zero support last year. It was a young team and those guys are gonna be better this year...still. Without spectacular goaltending Flint isn't gonna go anywhere...give or take Othmann.

obviously you're a lot more familiar with the league than me so no argument here. hopefully they're a lot better than expected. if not, hope he gets auctioned to one of the top teams.

From the small sample size of what I've watched of him, he actually reminds me a bit of a young Mike Richards albeit a winger and hard to assess how Othmann's defensive game will develop at this point. But the grittiness, the effective hitting as a smaller player, great shot and overall skillfulness without being supremely flashy are similar IMO. Richards also played a couple seasons in the OHL post-draft and turned out fine.

Scott Wheeler is a dummy but he isn't alone in his assessment on flint.

They're currently ranked as the 7th best CHL team and #2 in the OHL according to this list (behind Guelph.)

They were pretty brutal the first half of last year, if it wasn’t for Oth they might not have even made the playoffs, I remembered he factored in something like 50% of all the goals at one point. Younger kids got better during the season and will play even better next year too. Flint should have a decent team.

I agree the skaters will be better but besides Lombardi and Kuzmin there's no more elite talent on the roster and the improvement among the skaters is highly unlikely to make up for the loss of the CHL's best goalie.

He'll be fine. Go back and keep fine tuning the game. Get faster and stronger. Othmann doesn't look like a guy who will sulk. He's a big picture guy from interviews and body language.

There's a very good chance him and Edstrom get spots next season on ELCs. That would be huge.
