Prospect Info: At 16th Overall the Rangers Select Brennan Othmann

If Othmann and Cuylle end up as cost controlled 3d liners who can play a tough game and pose some offensive threat, than this draft would be a huge win for the franchise. Getting contributing NHL players at number 16 and number 60 overall while still maintaining a high end offense that taxes the cap is how you get organizational depth that can sustain contention over a long period of time. To early to tell, but it's all good news so far. Now I want these guys to tear up their PO runs.
At this point, I'd be disappointed if Othmann is a 3rd liner.

His shot + Panarin = Chef's kiss

can he play off wing? impressive numbers to this point.
The dude scores so many of his goals from the right wing face-off circle. His goal last night was off a rebound and Othmann was driving to the net.

Once these guys enter the offensive zone, they don't stay on their wings.

Lafreniere said he is more comfortable on the left wing because it's more natural for him exiting the zone. He doesn't have to think. I can find the exact quote. Once these guys are in the offensive zone, they move all over the ice.

I wrote this in the Prospects thread, but watching Othmann I think i;ve seen all his goals this season, he literally scores them everyway and from anywhere. Point shots, deflections, breakaways, rebounds, wrist shots from the circle, slap shot from the hash marks, quick shots on the rush, his off side or strong side, doesn't matter.....he is a goal scorer in every way, when he gets the puck he can score from anywhere.

Brennan Othmann was initially scheduled to attend Canada's WJC camp to prepare for the 2023 WJC, but I have been told that he will fly up August 1st to join the roster for the rescheduled 2022 WJC instead.

This was reported awhile ago that he was going to the camp. He’s a lock to make the team this summer with so many other players not going anymore….should have been on it originally from the start anyway..

No, it was reported that he was joining the 2023 WJC camp starting late July. For that camp, players expected to play in the 2022 rescheduled WJC were not included.

He only recently got the call to join them for the re-scheduled tournament due to several injuries and will now be skipping the 2023 WJC camp.

Odd, i definitely remember reading he was going to the camp for the summer team somewhere.

Here's the article about him being invited for the 2023 camp, which he won't be joining now that he was added to the 2022 camp. He'll be home until August 1st.

#1 star tonight vs Islanders with 2 assists great preseason game for him and Rangers
A stint under Gold medal winning coach Dave Cameron of Team Canada has certainly helped his game.....awesome young player for us . Now we just need coach Gallant put the finishing touches on him ! Love the abrasiveness and effort and smarts in the offensive zone .

Othmann going back to juniors is such a crock. Either hes going to dominate against lesser competition and gain nothing, or hes going to get bored and gain nothing. Someone mentioned it in the PGT, but what are the chances he plays in Europe. I believe during his draft year he played in Switzerland. Might be better for his development

I imagine best case scenario in juniors is he just picks some things to work extra hard at improving and focus less on piling up numbers

I'm not totally sure he's all "way too good for juniors now" like an elite level prospect but definitely seems like he could move on in his development but isn't able to because of the CHL rule

I think there is still plenty left for him to do in the OHL.

Flint is supposed to be good this year. Go lead that team to a memorial cup, win another WJC gold, score 60 and lead the league in scoring.

Also get bigger. I think he's big enough to play in the NHL right now, I don't know that he's big enough to survive.
Yeah, Othmann has to finish growing into his body, you can tell he's not that physically mature yet. And going back to the OHL and staying motivated is a part of mentally/emotionally maturing. If he can't do that he wasn't ready for the NHL anyway.
That being said, this kid is a killer. It's just one game but I don't think there's any forward prospect near him (not counting the Kid line of course) in our system and that includes Kravtsov. That's not a knock on Krav, I think he will be a solid contributor once he gets out of his own head, I just think Othmann will do it all for this team 2nd-1st line scoring, physical play, abrasiveness, motor, leadership. Total package. The kind of player you win with. I think him and Laf are both "Messier Lite" type of players. Laf of course being closer in talent. But I see them both as willing to do anything to win, and actually being ABLE to deliver.

I think they will protect him from himself, I love how he plays but he is too young to have the strength to do that in the NHL. He's going to get hurt playing like that at this age.

He has no fear sticking his nose in the dirty areas, but he did get rag-dolled around a couple of times that probably made Hajek very proud. He's in a weird spot, too good to go back to juniors and probably not mature enough to be an everyday NHLer.

Could they pull him from Juniors at anytime if there was an injury or two (god forbid) this season?

OR, could they wait until the end of the season to bring him up with 8 games left for the playoffs (assuming they qualify) and have him play in the dance but not burn a year? Or do playoff games count?

He's got a swagger about him that I like a lot. He's a bit of throwback player but I agree he will need to grow into his body a little more and work on the finer details. Great to see he had a great game and got 1st star.

Once they send him back, they can only recall him before his junior season is done under "emergency" circumstances, I believe.
