What are the chances he makes Canada’s U20 team?

Strong showing at the u18s i’m sure helps a bit?
Canada has only two forwards that can return for next year in Perfetti and Byfield and who knows if they're made available. He was one of 30 invited to the summer camp. Looking at the roster, it looks like he'd have a decent shot, but I don't know.

I think Othmann will become a good player. That said I was so pissed when they didn’t take Wallstedt. I like the Wild’s and Jets drafting the last couple years. Carolina with Jarvis last year. He could be a Barzal.
No. You know my stance on taking goalies in the first

I personally wanted Lucius, but if they saw something in his medical records that worried them, I understand backing away from the pick. Plus, it’s more likely he ends up a W anyways

I wonder what the odds are of him going back to Switzerland either his D+1 or his D+2. I know an NL team showed interest in him this past season although another year with EHC Olten would be great too.

I guess it all depends on the OHL restarting or cancelling another season.

I should probably add here that it was a bit more than interest. SC Bern actually acquired Othmann's B-licence from Olten while he was playing there. Of course actual playing time wouldn't have been a given but surely the plan was to join Bern after Olten's season ended. That never happened because Othmann decided to play the WJC18 instead.

He wasn't that off the board. Thehockeywriters had him 16th. CSS had him 17th (NA). And I'm pretty sure it's been reported Dallas was interested in him with the next pick. The issue wasn't really they took him when they did. It was a bit early but not some massive reach. It's more so that back then teams were way worse at evaluating defenseman. It's more that they took him with Fowler/Tarasenko on the board (but that said 11/15 teams passed on those two guys too).
What always makes it worse is most of the teams that passed on them didnt take Mcilrath

Not just that...there was was better talent on the board. The fact that they picked Othmann with Svechkov and Wallstedt still available just frustrates the hell out of me. If both of those players are gone at 16, then I'd be far more indifferent on this pick.

And honestly, I hope I eat a massive plate of crow over all of this. But right now, not feeling this pick at all. Feels like the McIlrath debacle all over again.

McIlrath? Way to exaggerate. Outside of Wallstedt - there was no big talent falling that the Rangers passed on for a reach. And taking goalies in round 1 is a very controversial subject in itself.

Also interesting on Tarasenko was that the Blues also had the 13th pick, skipped on Tarasenko and chose Jayden Schwartz (#28/NA by CSS) which could be considered even more of a reach than Mclrath.

Very well written analysis. I couldn't agree more. Right now, I think there is no telling which of Jones, Miller, Robertson or possibly even Lundqvist will still be with the Rangers in 2 years time. Fox, Lindgren and Trouba seem like the only ones absolutely staying for the time being. And Trouba, possibly only because of his hefty contract and NMC. It realistically could be any of them staying and any of them going.

I just hope Drury manages these asset values better than he managed Buch as an asset.

yea defense is going to be really interesting. like you said trouba fox lindgren all locked in. lindgren to me does bring some concern assuming we keep nils around at least for a bit. seems like jones would then be the odd man out inevitably sooner or later, potentially nils at some point although i hope to god we don't rush that. the prospect of if/when robertson / schneider are ready. going to be some critical decisions to be made, i just hope they're made deliberately and not made before we really know what we have / the best mix is.

Well it depends. If we keep guys on "their side", being LD or RD. Then Lundqvist doesn't replace Jones, he slots in behind Fox and Trouba at RD. Schneider presumably replaces Trouba at RD long term, unless we did move Lundqvist instead.

That basically leaves Robertson as Jones' main competition. And Jones, at least for now, seems far and away the better offensive D. In fact, right now he seems like our best offensive LD, potentially. With a higher offensive ceiling than Miller. And Robertson is seemingly tougher and better defensively than Miller. So I actually think if Miller doesn't step it up this season, improve in his complete game, he might be the odd man out.

It's going to be interesting to see how they arrange these guys though. My prediction is, eventually, Jones stays and ends up pairing with either Fox/Lundqvist on PP1 or PP2. I like Robertson, I do, but I don't prefer him to Jones necessarily. Now if Miller did progress offensively, in a big way, then we might not need Jones as much. But he hasn't yet. And Jones still has to prove himself offensively and defensively. But if scouting is anything to go by, he has the potential to be excellent offensively and above average defensively. That's not a guy I would be quick to trade away right now, before knowing which other of our young D actually reach their potential.

I see a lot of JT Miller in Othmann - build, skating styles, hands, shot. Seems more shoot first compared to JT, and may not have JT's upside, but I can't help but see the similarities when I watch his clips.

Is Chaz Lucius better than Brennan Othmann? I think it's debatable. It'll take a few years until we really know.

I really hope this doesn't turn into another Kravtsov vs Wahlstrom debate.

Lucius is a good player...unfortunately, he can't skate. Like absolutely not. That, in today's NHL, is a huge problem.

Lol biased Ranger fan account, he doesn’t look remotely fast. No objective observer would post that as a highlight of someone looking fast.

I don't understand those arguing that his skating "isn't that bad" or that he's "gotten much better". I still see an awkward gate and huge need for improvement. The same people that were saying Lucius wouldn't have been the better pick because of his skating, somehow see Othmann's skating as better or at least acceptable. I just don't see it. But I do wear glasses.

He's really not that much worse than Othmann. I really don't get it. Both Othmann and Lucius need to improve their skating drastically. Both have elite or near elite shots. Both are big or at least strong dudes. Except one has a real shot to play center and the other doesn't.

There really isn't a huge gap between their skating though. Look at Lucius in these highlights. He really doesn't look as bad as people say. I would say he and Othmann on par. Both need work, but not a huge gap. And this was 2 years ago. Supposedly after the surgery his skating looks better.

Every scouting report calls Othmann slow, many called him the worst skater of the entire draft. All of Buch’s scouting reports called him fast lol, you’ve called him slow several times but I don’t see it at all

Not a single noteworthy report called him slow. They say that he has horrible skating mechanics.

He generates a ton of power and actually gets up to top speed pretty quick.

Buch isn’t fast. He’s hella slow.
