Now how much would you pay Marner after his calm performance at Four Nations and of course his steady stellar player last couple of years.

He is a complete player

How much would you trade for and pay him for ?

$10-11M for 7 years.

He's an elite player but he's also a winger. I'm not spending huge money on a winger.

If he was a Center, probably $13-14M with the direction the cap is headed tbh.

I still have no idea why he has never, ever played a game at C.

We have tried domi/kerfoot/willy/holmberg/minten.

Why in the world is a 6ft selke finalist unable to play C.

He has played D for the leafs.

10-11M. He’d decline. But I’m not paying a soft wing who underperforms when it matters most more than that. He’s not on that level.

If I was a team that didn’t need to penny pinch every contract because my core hasn’t broken out yet—I would go 14x7 or 15x7.

Specifically thinking Chicago, San Jose.

The extra million or two per year you’d likely end up spending on some other cap dump anyways. May as well put it to use on bringing a star in to help develop the kids.

Reminds me a bit of the role Tavares had with when the Leafs youth (Marner included) was coming in.

It’s February, not April/May.

Just won a cup. Reality is that game was higher stakes and more “important” than a cup. Thr president of the US was calling. 10 million in the us watched. It was a massive game.

A cup was handed out in August. Olympic golds are handed out in February. Seems like a great month to be a clutch performer.

Marner has a full no move clause. They can’t trade him. He either signs in TO or walks July first.

Why does he give up the extra year. That makes no sense to me.

If he wants 13….. he has to make up 2 million a year to break even. If he wants out. Why not get traded for an extension

Who are you trying to convince, yourself or others?

It’s 100% up to him. Leafs have no control. He might sign a UFA deal at 12.5 x 4 and collect fifty mil. Then in 3 years (summer he is eligible to extend with that club) sign for 15 per over 8 years. He ends up with a lot more that way.

Yes but none of it makes sense. He would be 28 and wanting to go to ufa at 32?

If you want to leave. Why stay the last year. Why. Enforce your NMC just to leave? Really odd way to make yourself hated in your home town.

Who are you trying to convince, yourself or others?

Stating facts. He played a great game on literally the biggest hockey stage in the last 15 years. Heck I don’t even know that as many people watched/cared about 2010 as last night.

You are the one who is pretending that the month matters instead of the stage/stakes

The point is none of us know what Marner wants. What we do know is the Leafs can’t afford to let him walk for the value of only clearing his cap. Which means Marner has them over a barrel.

In a trade Rantanen for Marner. I know Marner is the better Big Game player recently but Rantanen was ok a couple years ago.

Can't wait to read the thread on July 2 after he signs for 14 mill over 7 with Colorado.
