He looks like he's auditioning for the sequel to American History X

Hopefully he gets his juju back.... he hasn't been the same since he sidelined his high kick
No joke, that was what I thought earlier as well. He would look like one of the background characters.

Burnt Toast speaks:

“If it was that easy (to get rid of the bad feelings), I will shave everything, even these,” he said, pointing to his eyebrows. “Just a good time to try it. Next 10 years I try to keep all my hair, so now was good time.”

“I can’t forget,” he said. “Maybe someone can forget. At same time, I don’t want to say I’m the saddest guy in the summer. Life is good still. I still have lots of goals in my head. When you’re thinking about that (last playoff), it’s straight to a bad mood. Regular season can help for that. Get back to your routine, have some success.”

And he’s back to the Rangers with a new coach. Panarin and Gerard Gallant didn’t see eye to eye much during Gallant’s two seasons behind the bench, especially during the playoffs. Peter Laviolette is here now and Panarin is excited, even with Laviolette’s reputation as a bit more of a stern taskmaster than Gallant.

“If you need some help, nothing against coach, (he) sometimes tell you, motivate you, wake you up a little bit,” Panarin said. “Sometimes if you have success in regular season, maybe you can be too relaxed. He have lots of experience, so he knows what to do.”

“I just try to do what I can, practice hard in the summer. Be honest with God about my game, give everything I can,” he said. “Stop thinking about different things. I can play better, for sure. Regular season was good. Playoff was terrible, of course. Just try not thinking, stay away from people who want to talk about what I need to do on the ice.”

He’s just learning the system man. Give it a few games and he’ll only be turning over the puck every other play.

Panarin is kinda in the same situation as Laffy. Their seasons will depend on how much they (care to) move their feet.

The Laf hate is going to start to trickle into this thread once the season starts.

Gonna get my Mas on and say I told you so when it happens.

I don't think its that simple for Panarin.

I won't say that he needs to be "carried" per se, but he definitely needs to be supported at this point in his career. He needs a line mate who can handle the transition load and preferably cause a ton of NZ turnovers to push plays the other way up the top half of the ice. Panarin is still elite at creating when theres space and chaos, he just isn't capable of being the guy who creates the space or the chaos anymore. It's not a lack of effort or "moving his feet", he just isn't capable of moving like he did when he first got here. I don't see him changing his game to feed into more of a cycle based approach (even if it would help him immensely) so if you want the most out of him, it's going to have to be with people who can excel in a rush based attack.

Chytil is at least stylistically, probably his best match as a line mate. At this point I'd probably throw Wheeler or Vesey on the other wing and hope that it works well enough but I'm not holding my breath on that one. He's become pretty much impossible to play with.

Oh I agree and I've said so often. Panarin is an issue (for all his points) because he forces a top 6 line to play Panarin hockey for better and worse. It wasn't like that when Panarin was on top of his game in the past.

I said elsewhere the other day that I feel our 3Cs are too similar in style (big horses but limited vision/playmaking skills) and that Panarin needs a C that can support him. Chytil is not that guy either. The hope now really is if Laviolette can find a way to do things differently.

Just keep leading in scoring and even-strength scoring and it doesn't much matter what those who hate him blather about.
As long as his pluses far out number his negatives I look at him as an asset. If he gives a full effort I see no reason he should not be fine.

You can't consistently put up 90 points without a full effort.
For the most part I agree and that is what I was saying. Nobody can give a full effort 100% of the time but to get 90 points you have to being putting effort in a good amount of the time.

I have to say, we grumble a lot about Panarin not having anyone who can play his game with him on the roster. But honestly, who is that player period? Like in the entire league?

He was somehow effective with mid ass Ryan Strome, but that was also mostly before what I believe was a major decline in his physical abilities and desire.

Is there any situation in the entire league that you could theoretically plop this player into wherein he would be worth his cap hit?

We saw Panarin win a board battle tonight in game 1 of the season. You could probably count the number of times he even tried to dig for a puck on the boards last year on your hands.

It was never a matter of talent with this guy. It's is he willing to play the kind of game needed to win in the playoffs. Jury is still out on that one.

I know it's a stupid little thing, but I actually appreciate Panarin shaving his head. It feels like an acknowledgement that he has to change some things about his approach to the game, to give us a better chance at having playoff success.
